Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assassinations often change the course of history. Here is an intriguing look at dozens of notable assassinations and attempts throughout history, including complete details about the assassin, the victim, the circumstances of the attack, and the outcome. In the Crosshairs also features photos of many of the victims or would-be victims, and rare archival material, including excerpts from original police reports. High-profile celebrities, political figures, religious leaders, and many others have fallen prey to assassins, and many have survived. In the Crosshairs is arranged in alphabetical order, by last name, and includes such details as: On November 8, 1939, Adolf Hitler narrowly escaped an assassination attempt – 12 minutes after he left a room where he was making a speech, a bomb went off. Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat would probably have survived the assassin’s bullet on October 6, 1981, if he hadn’t taken off his bulletproof vest – but he didn’t like the way it made his suit bulge. Robert John Bardo, the murderer of young actress Rebecca Schaeffer, carried with him to the crime scene a copy of J. D, Sallinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, just like Mark David Chapman did when he murdered John Lennon nearly nine years earlier. From notable murders (Abraham Lincoln, Gianni Versace, and Indira Gandhi) to little-known attempts (George W. Bush, Wild Bill Hickock, and Andy Warhol) here is a surprising, informative, and intriguing book that deserves to be on every history buff’s bookshelf. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: Mystery fans will devour this entry into the classic, wisecracking Nero Wolfe series, in which Wolfe must track down a dangerous gunman—or risk losing his right-hand man Archie Goodwin is chipper as he strolls home from his weekly poker game, money in his pocket and a smile on his lips. He has just reached Nero Wolfe’s stately brownstone on West Thirty-Fifth Street when a sedan whips around the corner and two gunshots ring out, nearly hitting Goodwin. It is a warning, and the message is clear: The next bullet will not miss. Rotund investigator Nero Wolfe has made more than his fair share of enemies over the years, and it seems one of them has decided to strike, targeting Wolfe’s indefatigable assistant. Some might run for cover, but Archie Goodwin is not the type. With the help of Wolfe’s brainpower, Goodwin will find the man who wants him dead—unless the killer gets to Goodwin first. Nero Award–winning author Robert Goldsborough continues the brilliant work of Rex Stout in this classic mystery series. According to Publishers Weekly, “Goldsborough cleverly captures the tone and language of the originals. Rex Stout fans can only hope he has no plans to wind up the series soon.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is trying to eliminate the British Royal Family? And why? After all, the monarchy is largely ceremonial and symbolic. What does the Stone of Destiny have to do with an ancient Biblical promise? Where is the Throne of David? God promised David that someone would sit on his throne throughout eternity. It’s that earthly throne that Christ will claim upon His return. And yet, where did it go after King Zedekiah was overthrown and exiled to Babylon in 585 BC? Why would a new world leader, who waits in the shadows to assume his role in history, want to claim the Throne of Promise as his? When The Assembly is tasked to fulfill this leader’s wish, will they succeed in thwarting God’s plan? Based upon a mix of Biblical prophecy and current events, A Zealot’s Destiny, Book 5 of the MedAir Series, is a political thriller that will take you on a breakneck roller coaster of action. An explosion at a royal residence in England leads to a small town in Missouri. Is it terrorism, an assassination … or both? Agents of the Royal Protection Service, FBI, and Secret Service … some, or all, could be corrupt. From Westminster College back to Westminster Abbey, Lynch Cully doesn’t know who to trust. In the end, his life will never be the same. You won’t want to put this book down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if...? In the ashes of a dead culture, a new world is born. After the world is destroyed and all memory of the past is lost, a time capsule is unearthed. In it is something called the New World Testament and a Torah: two writings that threaten to shake humankind down to its very core. It was a tough time for the human race. Reduced to small groups vying for recognition in a harsh environment, people struggle to survive after rediscovering religion. One society, the Union, will do anything to stop the religious neophytes whose most cherished belief is that Christ will be born in their time. Ardent, a Union vanguard trooper and a warrior, had orders to hunt down the Judeo-Christians, at whatever cost in lives. He has second thoughts when he meets Bandy, the love of his life, a Judeo-Christian. About the same time, a child is born: a baby boy named Jesus, the Second Coming of Christ. What if God is about second chances? What if this is the world's second chance? What if Christ isn't crucified this time? What if he is? This novel is a thought-provoking journey into the world of "WHAT IF...?" A New Day is Difeo's fourth novel. It's more than a fable or a fantasy; it is an epic imagining of a post-Apocalyptic world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of banking in twentieth-century Oklahoma is also the story of the Sooner State’s first hundred years, as Michael J. Hightower’s new book demonstrates. Oklahoma statehood coincided with the Panic of 1907, and both events signaled seismic shifts in state banking practices. Much as Oklahoma banks shed their frontier persona to become more tightly integrated in the national economy, so too was decentralized banking revealed as an anachronism, utterly unsuited to an increasingly global economy. With creation of the Federal Reserve System in 1913 and subsequent choice of Oklahoma City as the location for a branch bank, frontier banking began yielding to systems commensurate with the needs of the new century. Through meticulous research and personal interviews with bankers statewide, Hightower has crafted a compelling narrative of Oklahoma banking in the twentieth century. One of the first acts of the new state legislature was to guarantee that depositors in state-chartered banks would never lose a penny. Meanwhile, land and oil speculators and the bankers who funded their dreams were elevating get-rich-quick (and often get-poor-quick) schemes to an art form. In defense of country banks, the Oklahoma Bankers Association dispatched armed vigilantes to stop robbers in their tracks. Subsequent developments in Oklahoma banking include adaptation to regulations spawned by the Great Depression, the post–World War II boom, the 1980s depression in the oil patch, and changes fostered by rapid-fire advances in technology and communication. The demise of Penn Square Bank offers one of history’s few unambiguous lessons, and it warrants two chapters—one on the rise, and one on the fall. Increasing regulation of the banking industry, the survival of family banks, and the resilience of community banking are consistent themes in a state that is only a few generations removed from the frontier.

Book excerpt: The bestselling historians turn their focus to America’s role in the world since the end of World War II Schweikart, author of the number one New York Times bestseller A Patriot’s History of the United States, and Dougherty take a critical look at America, from the postwar boom to her search for identity in the twenty-first century. The second volume of A Patriot’s History of the Modern World picks up in 1945 with a world irrevocably altered by World War II and a powerful, victorious United States. But new foes and challenges soon arose: the growing sphere of Communist influence, hostile dictatorships and unreliable socialist allies, the emergence of China as an economic contender, and the threat of world Islamification. The book reestablishes the argument of American exceptionalism and the interplay of our democratic pillars—Judeo-Christian religious beliefs, free market capitalism, land ownership, and common law—around the world. Schweikart and Dougherty offer a fascinating conservative history of the last six decades.

Book excerpt: The moral, political, and legal problems surrounding the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq are addressed with uncommon frankness in this collection of essays by some of the world's most influential academics, lawyers, journalists, politicians, and military, intelligence, and media experts. Contributions include academics such as Noam Chomsky, Immanuel Wallerstein, and Claes Ryn; journalists Milton Viorst, Robert Fisk, Kirkpatrick Sale, and Justin Raimondo; former CIA professional Ray McGovern; former Defense Intelligence Agency professional W. Patrick Lang; and Fr. Jean-Marie Benjamin, personal friend of the former Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq Traiq Aziz. Discussing the Iraq war and related issues such as the legal foundation of the war on terror, the detention practices at Guantanamo bay, and the roots of the American neoconservative ideology, the essays illustrate the hypocrisy and illegality of America's stance on terrorism and its policies of aggression in the Middle East.

Book excerpt: A light and easy read with some serious and heavyweight messages, 'Seven Deadly Sins' is a 'must read' for all managers, would-be managers, management teachers, students of management and shareholders. In it the author explores some of the behavioural characteristics in management that can lead to sub-optimal financial performance and undermine both reputation and shareholder value. He supports his contentions by using examples from well publicised and high profile corporate events alongside personal insights and experiences from his interesting and varied career. The book offers food for thought for shareholders, both large and small, and for the managers who perpetrate the seven deadly sins. Emeritus Professor Henry Ellington summarised 'Seven Deadly Sins' as "excellent, well-written, extremely informative and helpful and (at times) highly amusing".
