Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip to Maoriland New Zealand, the land of the Maori and the Moa, the country in which originally there was not a flower with a perfume or a bird that sang, was one of the most mys terious and desolate lands on this hemisphere. 'out of the track of the early mariners it was a great undertak ing in the' years gone by to reach there, vessels taking six to eight months to reach its shores, where now it can be accomplished in about forty-five days. Ac cording to some it was uninhabited till by gales or tribal wars members of the Kanaka tribe (sandwich Islands) were driven to seek an asylum in this wild and mystic country To bear out that theory the customs of the Maoris and the Kanaka are similar; but, through clim atic conditions, they have grown taller and sturdier. As to animal life there was none until Captain Cook, the discoverer, landed some pigs, which fact, no doubt, was the cause of canibalism being practiced. Now, what a transformation, fine cities, large tracts of cultivated land, woolen and other manufactories, gold and coal mining, an immense frozen meat industry, with wool and wheat as a background; in fact everything that goes to make a prosperous country is inrfull swing. The one thing is left, and will be there for all time, its grand and wildly rugged coast line, for it has that peculiarity, that its interior is sheltered from the rude blasts of. gales, as a garden protected by a high wall. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musings in Maoriland Here is ever a danger of confounding analogy and identity. If it is said a State is an organ ism growing, developing as other living bod ies grow and develop, - one must not assume that a nation passes through the same phases and has all the characteristics Of an individual. It is a useful analogy to use - to say the State is an organism. There is, however, no identity, but Often dissimilarity, between the growth of a person and that Of a nation. With this caution, however, it will help us in briefly tracing the intellectual history Of New Zealand - to speak. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of Maori Land French thinker says, When one has lived four weeks in London, one feels one could write a thick volume about the English; when one has lived there a year, one begins to have doubts on the subject; and when one has lived there ten years, one gives up the projected volume in despair.' There is, however, as a rule, a compensating freshness and vividness about first impressions which, with a riper knowledge, one may often vainly strive to recall; and for this reason, and also because our sea and land experiences were of a somewhat unique character, I have ventured to reproduce some part of our home budgets in more permanent form. On one or two points it may be well to Speak categorically at the outset, so that any chance of misapprehension on the important subject of mission work may be avoided. Nobody knows now where that Old land is, nobody has ever found it again, but its far-strewn sons and daughters still tell of its remembered glories, its radiant sunshine, its flowers and butterflies, its white-topped mountains and its mighty streams. Some think it may have been India, while others say it must have been some age-old continent which has since sunk and now lies buried under the Pacific Ocean. Book Synopsis The Kangaroo Hunters by : Anne Bowman
Download or read book The Kangaroo Hunters written by Anne Bowman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kangaroo Hunters: Or, Adventures in the Bush The rapid spread of education creates a continual demand for new books, of a character to gratify the taste of the young, and at the same time to satisfy the scruples of their instructors. The restless, inquiring spirit of youth craves, from its first development, food for the imagination, and even the simplest nursery rhymes owe their principal charm to their wonderful improbability. To these succeed the ever-interesting tales of Fairies and Enchanters; and the ardent boy only forsakes Ali Baba and Sindbad for the familiar and lifelike fictions of "Robinson Crusoe," and the hundred pleasant tales on the "Robinson Crusoe" model which have succeeded that popular romance. It is the nature of man to soar above the common prose of every-day life in his recreations; from the weary school-boy, who relieves his mind, after arithmetical calculations and pages of syntax, by fanciful adventures amidst scenes of novelty and peril, and returns to his labors refreshed, to the over-tasked man of study or science, who wades through his days and nights of toil, cheered by the prospect of a holiday of voyaging or travelling over new scenes.
