My plea must be that the itineraries and results of most of the journeys, on which this little book is based, have been published already in one scientific journal or another. Some of those wanderings are not very recent, all have led me over ground very similar; and to have recounted them step by step must have led to much iteration, and made me exemplify that admirable maxim l'art d'ennuyer c' est tout dire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Levant, Vol. 1 IN turning over the pages of In the Levant with a view to its revision for the present illustrated edition, I am reminded that it was written seven teen years ago. That is a considerable portion out of an individual life, and indeed in that of a West ern republic, but in the East it is scarcely the space between a sleeping and a waking. Since it was written, the russo-turkish war has been fought; philanthropy and fanaticism have again and again attempted to modernize, or to restore to the ancient ways, the hills and wildernesses of J udea; the English flag has been planted in Cyprus; English law, arms, and manners have encamped in Egypt; the Sultan has been mur dered, the Sultan has been deposed as imbecile, the Sultan still sits in his seraglio, lazily watching his iron-clads in the Golden Horn, in the midst of a civilization that has been steadily decaying for five hundred years, and in adding all the Occidental vices to the Oriental immoralities, and assuming. In the rush and exactions of modern life one finds little time and less inclination to devote to the writings of theorists or the output of dreamers. Intelligent men and women demand authentic utterances by recognized masters, especially when a country or a people are under consideration. In this book upon Turkey we find the product of a master mind, reinforced by more than half a century of life within the country itself. Not only did Dr. Greene live within Turkey during this most critical and revolutionary period of its modern history, but he was himself an important factor in that history. He resided at different places, he spoke the vernacular of the people, he was the friend and intimate of leaders among the historic and often contending races, he observed at first hand the kaleidoscopic transformations of peoples and country and breathed the atmosphere of the East as it began to tingle with the new elements of life that filtered into it from the West, and so became able to interpret those changes into Western terms. Not only has Dr. Greene lived in the center of the events he describes, but he has been a wise and intelligent delineator of what he saw as well as a careful student of what others have observed and written. A student and maker of history, a contributor to and an interpreter of the life and longings of the people of the Turkish Empire, the author of this book is in a position to make his hearers as well as his readers see and understand questions related to the Ottoman Empire over which multitudes have stumbled for generations. Righter, Agent of the American Bible Society in the Levant Few words of preface are required for this unpretending volume. A man's life is not to be measured by the number of his years. It has been well said that some die old at thirty and others young at fourscore. The subject of this sketch was formed for high accomplishment, and to all human appearances was destined to do a great work in the service to which he was called. His early removal was a sad blow to the host of friends who were looking to his future with high hopes. But the thoughts of Infinite Wisdom are higher than ours. And while we bow with resignation to the will of Him who called our friend and brother so early to himself, we find a mournful satisfaction in preparing these memorials of one whose name and virtues will long be fragrant in the hearts of all who knew him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pen and Pencil in Asia Minor, or Notes From the Levant On my return to London in 1867, I happened to be thrown In the way of some coffee-planters from Brazil and other places, and for the first time it struck me that Ceylon might be worth a trial. I accordingly called upon the chief busi ness representatives of that beautiful island, urging upon them the desirability of adding tea to its other products, explaining how the industry was managed in China and India, and offering my services to start a model tea-garden in any suitable locality. To everything I said respectful attention was paid, but not one of the gentlemen addressed would consent to make a beginning, and all of them had numerous objections to offer. I was told, for example, that the Ceylon coffee-planters knew nothing, and cared, if possible, less, about tea-farming; that their estates were already fully occupied with coffee; that labour was too expensive to admit of the fragrant leaf being grown and manipulated to advantage; that, in short, the game was hardly worth the candle. My arguments thus fell Upon sceptical or unwilling ears, and no steps of any importance were taken for a further period, until the pinch of the various coffee-plagues came. Nevertheless, eight years had not elapsed ere tea-farming had taken root as a Ceylon industry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
