This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1975, In the Garden is a collection of writings by and about Samuel L. Lewis, the founder of the Dances of Universal Peace. The book contains key writings by Lewis, including spiritual lessons, practices and poetry, as well remembrances and photos of him by his early students. Samuel L. Lewis also known as Sufi Sam and Sufi Ahmed Murad Chisti (October 18, 1896 - January 15, 1971) was an American mystic and horticultural scientist who founded what became the Sufi Ruhaniat International, a branch of the Chishtia Sufi lineage. After a lifetime of spiritual study with teachers East and West, primarily the Sufi Hazrat Inayat Khan and the Zen monk Nyogen Senzaki, Lewis was recognized simultaneously as a Zen master and Sufi murshid (senior teacher) by Eastern representatives of the two traditions. He also co-founded the Christian mystical order called the The Holy Order of Mans. His early interest in international seed exchange and organic agriculture also established him as one of the pioneers of green spirituality. His most enduring legacy may be the creation of the Dances of Universal Peace, an early interspiritual practice that has spread around the world in the 45 years since his passing. "The Sufi dervishes, using their feet...rid their minds of useless luggage. The ridding of luggage is more important than the method. What is needed is a method that works, not a philosophy about method which can be very confusing." "Words are not peace. Thoughts are not peace. Plans are not peace. Programs are not peace. Peace is fundamental to all faiths. Peace is fullness, all inclusive...and must be experienced." "One of the reasons I am teaching this music and dancing is to increase Joy, not awe towards another person, but bliss in our own self. This is finding God within, through experience."

Book excerpt: Sufi Murshid, Zen Master, Environmental and Peace Activist, Missionary to the Hippie Generation, Founder of the Dances of Universal Peace....Drawn from his own voluminous writings, A Garden of Vision and Initiation allows us to hear Samuel Lewis's story and teaching in his own words, the authentic voice of a spiritual original and pioneer."Here is the story of a mystic, a gardener, a Sufi, a Zen student, a true human being. Samuel Lewis' spiritual practice was deepened through his meetings with Hazrat Inayat Khan, but his teaching, his wisdom, came from his own visionary nature. Garden of Visions and Initiation takes us on the inner and outer journey of this remarkable man, who left us with the gift of the Dances of Universal Peace, and the living grace of a soul who embraced both love and pain in service to God."--Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, Ph.D., author, Love is a Fire, the Sufis Mystical Journey Home."The reader of Dr. Neil Douglas-Klotz's sensitively selected and annotated writings of Murshid Samuel Lewis (1876-1971) is taken on the tumultuous spiritual journey of a truly universal being; a voyage propelled throughout his life by the quest for Truth, whether through the teachings of Sufism, Zen Buddhism or any other divinely revealed path. The reader grows with Sufi Sam as he explores with sincerity the inner and outer world, experiences hope and disappointment, and dances through this earthly life with his trademark flashes of spiritual humour and love for all. A collection of writings that will be of particular interest for those westerners who, like Lewis himself, find their path through the teachings of the east."--Muneera Haeri, author of The Chishtis, A Living Light, co-author with Shaykh Fadhlalla Haeri of Sufi Encounters."Whether you have known Lewis or are new to his work, it is illuminating to experience, in his compelling first person prose, how his determination to rise above the vicissitudes of his early years became fully realized in the form of an extraordinary capacity for healing the world."--W. A. Mathieu, author of The Listening Book and Bridge of Waves."Sufi Vision and Initiation (1986) was always for me a reference for chronology regarding the life of Sam Lewis. Now comes what could be described as an autobiography par excellence. Sam Lewis wrote in The Lotus and the Universe (1963): "This is not an autobiography, although one may come sometime." This book, Gardens of Vision and Initiation (2020) is as close to an autobiography as we will have. This updated chronology of Lewis's writings, dowsed from the files by the editor, is a labor of love." --Mansur Johnson, author of Murshid: A personal memoir of life with American Sufi Samuel L. Lewis and compiler and editor of Big Tales: All the stories in the 12 volumes of The Sufi Message of Hazrat Inayat Khan."Everytime I remember Sam, I end up laughing at myself. That's pretty good work for a dead-rascal-saint."--Ram Dass, author of Be Here Now and Still Here."I have no fonder memory of the 60's than the appearance of this strange-looking man, who said things which made me first laugh, then smile, then later pause in a preciation of a spiritual original, a pioneer."--Dr. Jacob Needleman, author of The New Religions and Lost Christianity."As much of a wonder-filled reading experience it is to dive into this 'map', this description of the territory, I'm sure that Murshid Sam would have encouraged the reader to go out and have some direct experiences, traveling the territory and leaving behind any concepts about it. Gardens of Vision offers us the opportunity to witness what a life of dynamic transformation lived through direct experiences and encounters looks like."--the Rev. Tasnim Hermila Fernandez, co-founder of the International Network for the Dances of Universal Peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sufi master, mystic, and royal musician Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan (1882-1927) traveled from his native India to the West in 1910 bringing a message of spiritual liberty-"the heart that is receptive to the Light of God is free." He traveled, spoke, and performed all over Europe and the United States, touching hearts and inspiring minds. His book of 366 daily aphorisms, "The Bowl of Saki," first published in 1922 and later updated in 1936, is a wealth of spiritual wisdom to help illuminate the sometimes rocky path of daily life. The Saki (or Saqi in the original Persian) is the pourer of wine in Sufi poetry, symbolizing the bringer of ecstasy and the longing of the Divine to be deeply known. Spiritual commentaries on "The Bowl of Saki" by Murshid Samuel L. Lewis (1896-1971) were published in 1978, and reflect Lewis's lifelong devotion to and study of the teachings of his beloved spiritual guide. Murshid Sam, one of Hazrat Inayat Khan's foremost disciples, was the first American Sufi master, the originator of the Dances of Universal Peace, and the founder of the Sufi Ruhaniat International. In his commentaries on "The Bowl of Saki," he draws out hidden meanings in Hazrat Inayat Khan's pithy sayings, exploring multi-dimensional philosophical, historical, and spiritual contexts. This volume, newly edited by Murshid Sam's esoteric secretary, Wali Ali Meyer, presents the sayings and commentaries for deeper study, so that "the overarching purpose of becoming what is meant by truly being a Sufi, a Buzurg, or a Bodhisattva stands forth...and...we are led to see how we are all interconnected in such a way that our thoughts, feelings, and realization affect the whole of creation. "May you, dear reader, drink deeply of this Bowl of Saki, the cup of the wine of the presence of God, being offered you by these great souls, who through their inspiration have brought forth the nectar of the Spirit of Guidance." (from the Introduction)

It is a vehicle for understanding the infinite nature of God, and for discovering the divine potential in every soul. It is also a guidebook for progressing through the stages of the spiritual path and an instruction manual for teachers on how to work with students more wisely, as physicians of the heart. In the process of this voyage to discovery, the reader is systematically exposed to the universal mysticism encoded in the Qur'an and in the classical Sufi traditions, as well as to a modern psychological approach that works with the 99 Names to achieve individuation and wholeness.

Book excerpt: This is a book about the intersection of Sufi and Hasidic wisdom as gleaned from the lives and teachings of Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, the founder of the Jewish Renewal Movement and Pir Vilayat Khan, the head and spiritual director of the Sufi Order of the West. The foreword is by Netanel Miles-Yépez who is one of the founders of the Adam Kadmon Book imprint as well as a Pir and founder of a Jewish-Sufi lineage which was blessed and inspired by Reb Zalman and Pir Vilayat. Reb Zalman and Pir Vilayat knew and held each other in the highest regard while still living. Indeed they were initiated into each other’s spiritual community. More than anything, this book shows how a deep spirituality can be developed that is rooted in religious tradition but transcends it.

His teaching was noted for its stirring beauty and power, as well as for its applicability to all people, regardless of religious or philosophical background. This book gathers together three of Inayat Khan's most beloved essays on the spiritual life from among the fourteen volumes of his collected works: "The Inner Life": Inayat Kahn's sublime portrait of the person whose life is a radiant reflection of the Divine "Sufi Mysticism": in which the author identifies and shatters the common misconceptions about mysticism to reveal its true meaning "The Path of Initiation and Discipleship": What it means to set out on the spiritual path and how to find and maintain the right relationship with a teacher

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Story about the Oldest Stories in the WorldToday apocalyptic predictions and images dominate popular culture and social media. Yet for most of our history, human consciousness focused on the mystery of beginnings, not endings. Our ancestors felt that the most powerful energy and clearest vision for the future could be found at our inception. They meditated on stories of the Great Beginning as the way to go forward. Original Meditation is two books in one. First it investigates the ancient tradition of creation mysticism and shows how Western culture became sidetracked into an increasingly narrow, apocalyptic world view. Second, it shows how we can begin to recover an authentic meditation on our shared beginnings, a meditation that can bring us into a more embodied and compassionate present. To help us on our way, Neil Douglas-Klotz offers us a living anthology of voices, from a mystical view of the first chapters of Genesis, to the Aramaic words of Jesus, to translations of mystical voices like Jelaluddin Rumi, Ibn Arabi, Meister Eckhart and the Jewish Kabbalists. Uniting the native spirituality of the Middle East with Western creation spirituality, we catch a glimpse of the life-affirming energy of "beginning-time" and experience what it means to be fully human in today's world. "After reading this very welcome resource, you will want to join Douglas-Klotz in exclaiming: "Genesis Now!" --Spirituality and Health (voted one of best spiritual books of the year). "Neil Douglas-Klotz is a rare jewel; a brilliant scholar with heart whose words have the power to reconnect us with our sacred source. This is truly a book for our times.... The perfume of divine belonging rises from every page as this modern mystic skillfully guides us into the essence of the Sacred Mystery. --Dr. Joan Borysenko, author of Your Soul's Compassp "Deeply moving, compelling, and radiant with hope, the book is a living prayer that can contribute to personal and inter-religious transformation." --Mary Ford-Grabowsky, author of Sacred Voices "By the time we finish this book, we are ready and able to join body, heart, mind, and spirit into a healing wholeness-indeed, the wholeness of Creation." --Rabbi Arthur Waskow, Director of the Shalom Center, author of God Wrestling

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first teacher to bring Islamic mysticism to the West presents music’s divine nature and its connection to our daily lives in this poetic classic of Sufi literature. Music, according to Sufi teaching, is really a small expression of the overwhelming and perfect harmony of the whole universe—and that is the secret of its amazing power to move us. The Indian Sufi master Hazrat Inayat Khan (1882–1927), the first teacher to bring the Islamic mystical tradition to the West, was an accomplished musician himself. His lucid exposition of music's divine nature has become a modern classic, beloved not only by those interested in Sufism but by musicians of all kinds.
