Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A favorite pastime of grandparents is to narrate stories to their grandchildren. A group of tales is invariably about the antics of their own children as babies or kids. What seemed irksome thirty or forty years ago is now amusing and entertaining. My kids’ grandmother (my mother) was no exception. Many a times she narrated tales of Mala to my kids Rasika aged 10 and Harshad aged 7. The children enjoyed the stories. Imagine their surprise when they found out that this Mala was no figment of imagination but a real kiddo and none other but their mother! This made the stories more exciting. And what are tales that don’t come with a moral, especially when a part is for the elders? This makes them more endearing to the kids. These are some (printable) stories of Mala’s antics, some done knowingly, some unknowingly but innocently. Today after hearing them Mala comments on the incidents with humour, wry humour, or sometimes matter-of-factly or even sheepishly. The stories are not only for kids, but also for their parents, grandparents & also parents-to-be. These stories are fun but not just fun

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ways of Voice explores techniques of voice production in North India, from Bollywood to raga music to ghazal to devotional hymns and Sufi song. The voices in play here are not merely given, but achieved. Singers consciously train themselves to cultivate characteristic vocal gaits, sonorities, and poetic attunements; they adopt postures of the vocal apparatus; they build habits of listening, temporality, and social relations. The action in Ways of Voice revolves around several dozen North Indian popular, devotional, classical, and folk singers engaged in projects of vocal striving. Like most singers, they are strategically working on changing, refining, and making their own voices. The book thus highlights the ways in which singers not only "have" voice, but actively acquire, cultivate and contest particular vocal dispositions for particular kinds of listeners. In framing a "Hindustani vocal ecumene" that encompasses a diverse range of classical, popular, and spiritual-devotional musical styles and practices, it offers an expansive look at ways of voice that extend far beyond commonsense boundaries of genre and place. A rich archive of audio and video examples are provided on the online companion site, which can be found at https://www.weslpress.org/readers-companions/.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating, informal approach to art appreciation, an eminent Indian scholar reveals the crucial difference between merely looking at and really seeing painting and sculpture, drawing and architecture. And to the open-minded and sensitive observer, he shows how simple perceptions can be transmuted into darshana—the pure delight of union with the inner life of a work of art. The presentation is poetic, not technical, directed toward the general reader rather than the specialist. The author begins by symbolizing certain powers of the imagination as the "seven little-known birds of the inner eye." Then he traces these energies of the "body-soul" through a wide range of aesthetic response—from the first, almost involuntary discriminations lines, colors, and forms to the insights attained by the "third eye" of total vision. Illustrated and discussed are the superb murals and breathtaking architecture of India; ancient symbols and modern experiments; the landscape paintings of Song China and the works of major Western artists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the encounter of the self with situations of crisis from diverse disciplinary and cultural perspectives from antiquity to contemporary times. A crisis is at once a historically situated phenomenon and a recurring idea of endangerment or a breakdown in creaturely living. By making our choices stark and difficult, crisis opens up the possibility for genuinely fresh and unexpected beginnings. At the most fundamental level, crisis is the disintegration of relationality among creatures. In fact, crisis is a battle of attrition with and within selfhood. It has the potential to turn into a norm in everyday interaction. It then stops being an exception and becomes the very condition of our living. Through the rubrics of the assured and the restive, the volume addresses how selfhood encounters and negotiates concentric circles of crisis in life and literature. Does the idea of crisis allow us to formulate the idea of self in a particular way? How do certain sources and resources within the self – stoic or heroic, political and creative – come into being during crisis? While some essays delve into questions of repose and sensuality by highlighting specific cases and trajectories from the subcontinent, others deal with questions of mythology, politics and art in a wider sense. One essay directly addresses the core literary question of the uncanny and its relation to selfhood. While specific concerns illuminate each essay, the volume speaks with a collective, global sense of crisis that faces humanity now and tentatively offers some prospects to deal with it.
