Book excerpt: “Has all the elements of a juicy novel . . . riveting. . . . Reudite and elegant.” —Newsday NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE, Direcetd by Dabid Cronenbertg and STARRING KEIRA KNIGHTLY, VIGGO MORENSEN, MICHAEL FASSBENDER, and VINCENT CASSEL In 1907, Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung began what promised to be both a momentous collaboration and the deepest friendship of each man’s life. Six years later they were bitter antagonists, locked in a savage struggle that was as much personal and emotional as it was theoretical and professional. Between them stood a young woman named Sabina Spielrein, who had been both patient and lover to Jung and colleague and confidante to Freud before going on to become an innovative psychoanalyst herself. With the narrative power and emotional impact of great tragedy, A Dangerous Method is impossible to put down.
Book Synopsis Delphi Complete Works of Ellen Glasgow (Illustrated) by : Ellen Glasgow

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1942, Ellen Glasgow published 19 novels to critical acclaim, establishing a new form of Southern fiction. Offering realistic depictions of life in her native Virginia, her narratives avoided the nostalgia, sentimentality and idealistic escapism that characterised Southern literature after Reconstruction. With an assured and increasingly ironic treatment, Glasgow’s novels examined the decay of the Southern aristocracy and the trauma of the encroachment of modern industrial civilization, with compelling results. Book excerpt: "Hannah Thurston ... the daughter of Quaker parents, has herself been brought up a Quaker, but has strayed beyond the limits prescribed by George Fox and Robert Barclay, and can hardly be said to be a Quaker at all. She has made humanity her God, and philanthropy her worship. She has devoted herself body and soul to the assertion of woman's rights, and insists that woman has a right to be treated as a man, to enter public life, or to enter any public career, as a man, or to vote or be voted for as a man. She is, or wishes to be, a man-woman, and to force all men to recognize and respect her manly claims ..."--Brownson's Quarterly Review, July, 1864.

Book Synopsis Christian Thought in the Medieval Islamicate World by : Salam Rassi
Download or read book Christian Thought in the Medieval Islamicate World written by Salam Rassi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Thought in the Medieval Islamicate World: ʿAbdīshōʿ of Nisibis and the Apologetic Tradition is the first monograph-length study and intellectual biography of ʿAbdīshōʿ of Nisibis (d. 1318), bishop and polymath of the Church of the East. Focusing on his works of apologetic theology, it examines the intellectual strategies he employs to justify Christianity against Muslim (and to a lesser extent Jewish) criticisms. Better known to scholars of Syriac literature as a poet, jurist, and cataloguer, ʿAbdīshōʿ wrote a considerable number of works in the Arabic language, many of which have only recently come to light. He flourished at a time when Syriac Christian writers were becoming increasingly indebted to Islamic models of intellectual production. Yet many of his writings were composed during mounting religious tensions following the official conversion of the Ilkhanate to Islam in 1295. In the midst of these challenges, ʿAbdīshōʿ negotiates a centuries-long tradition of Syriac and Arabic apologetics to remind his readers of the verity of the Christian faith. His engagement with this tradition reveals how anti-Muslim apologetics had long shaped the articulation of Christian identity in the Middle East since the emergence of Islam. Through a selective process of encyclopaedism and systematisation, ʿAbdīshōʿ navigates a vast corpus of Syriac and Arabic apologetics to create a synthesis and theological canon that remains authoritative to this day.
