Book excerpt: The initial education and in-service training of all educators, particularly teachers, play a vital role in strengthening competences necessary for implementing inclusive educational practice. This paper analyses offered and implemented inservice training programmes for educators in the field of inclusive education or, more precisely, for working with children with disabilities in the period 2012-2014. The findings of the analysis indicate that the programmes aimed at all categories of children with disabilities are prevalent; most of the programmes address teaching and learning strategies and are intended for various profiles of educators at different education levels; approximately three quarters of the offered programmes were implemented. The paper also tackles unresolved issues about strengthening competences for implementing inclusive practice. [For the complete Volume 13, Number 1 proceedings, see ED568595.].

Book excerpt: This handbook provides a concise overview of special education services in countries across the world, using the Article on Education in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as the analytical frame. The Praeger International Handbook of Special Education presents a concise and clear overview of special education services in more than 70 countries across the world using the Article on Education in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities as the analytical frame. Each chapter offers information about the country in general, followed by sections on the public education system, the private education system, the special education system, teacher training requirements, and barriers to and promising trends in inclusive and special education. The volumes and chapters are organized by the United Nations Geoscheme, with Volume 1 including an overview of the volumes and chapters on countries in the Americas, Volume 2 addressing countries from Europe and Africa, and Volume 3 focusing on countries in Asia and Oceania. This is the most complete exploration of the delivery of supports and services to children and youth with disabilities across the globe available. The volumes do not compare among or between countries, but rather provide a baseline for understanding current special education practices and their relationship with general education and inclusive practices across the globe. Readers will come away with an in-depth understanding of what is happening with regard to the implementation of special education services and Article 24 of the Convention for the Rights of People with Disabilities. This valuable reference set serves researchers, graduate students, and policymakers in special and general education as well as professionals focused on issues of education worldwide and scholars focused on international special education. As such, this handbook will be an important reference source for university libraries, professional associations, and policy entities.

Book excerpt: Modern societies tend to demand innovative learning modalities in which foreign languages are used to teach content subjects from very early educational stages. Education authorities in different geographical areas of the world are currently working to determine how bilingual teaching should be developed depending, along with many other factors, on the initial training of bilingual education teachers. On this basis, it is necessary to review how tertiary education institutions deal with the theoretical foundations and practical approaches necessary for this learning modality to train bilingual education teachers for primary schools. The Handbook of Research on Training Teachers for Bilingual Education in Primary Schools includes international experiences of teacher training for bilingual education in primary schools in which educators should be able to recognize themselves and identify concrete working formulas to apply in their daily work. Covering key topics such as teacher training, language learning, and primary education, this reference work is ideal for administrators, teacher trainers, policymakers, researchers, scholars, practitioners, academicians, instructors, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like any other children, Roma children have the right to education. They are all born with talents and potential, just like other children, and are capable of succeeding and contributing to society - if they are accepted by the majority and educated in inclusive early childhood services and schools. However, many Roma children in Europe continue to face discrimination, segregation and exclusion from quality early childhood care and education (ECCE). Inclusion from the start - Guidelines on inclusive early childhood care and education for Roma children envisions ECCE as an important stepping stone toward inclusive participation in school and society. By fostering good health, well-being, school readiness and the value of equality and living together in the early years, society can help Roma children get a good start in primary school. These guidelines provide guidance on key themes in ECCE - such as the conceptualisation of ECCE services, agenda setting, curricular and pedagogical approaches, staff training and professional development, assessment and transition to primary education - and highlight examples of good practice. It is hoped that they will support the work of policy makers, early childhood educators and their trainers, Roma organisations, NGOs and international organisations and contribute to making a real change in the lives of young Roma children.

In education, finding ways to meet the learning needs of students with disabilities can be challenging, especially in schools, districts, regions, and countries with severely limited resources. Inclusive education—which fully engages all students, including students with disabilities or other learning challenges, in quality education—has proven particularly effective in helping all students learn, even while challenges to implementing inclusive education systems remain. This guide provides suggestions for developing inclusive education systems and policies, especially for low- and middle-income countries that are moving from a segregated system toward an inclusive system of education. We specifically address the needs of countries with limited resources for implementing inclusive education. However, our strategies and recommendations can be equally useful in other contexts where inclusive education practices have not yet been adopted.

Book excerpt: With the history of multilateral governance and the impact of the global pandemic, there is no doubt that we are at a transition between the system that marked the decades after the Second World War and a more extensive system of international governance that will characterize the world for the next generation. That system may keep the long-standing promise to serve the world's least advantaged, or it may serve to marginalize them further. For more than a century and a half, the most powerful national governments have created institutions of multilateral governance that promise to make a more inclusive world, a world serving women, working people, the colonized, the “backward,” the destitute, and the despised. That promise and the real impact need deliberation and discussion. The Handbook of Research on Global Institutional Roles for Inclusive Development examines the concepts that have powerfully influenced development policy and, more broadly, examines the role of ideas in these institutions and how they have affected the current development discourse. It enhances the understanding of how these ideas travel within systems and how they are translated into policy, modified, distorted, or resisted. Covering topics such as ethical consumption, academic migration, and sustainable global capitalism, this book is an essential resource for government officials, activists, management, academicians, researchers, students and educators of higher education, and educational administration and faculty.

Book excerpt: "This collection of first-person narratives by specialists in education from South East Europe makes vivid the politics and paradoxes of the transformation of education systems. The book chronicles the profound effect on schooling caused by the armed conflict, post-communist transition, and increasing openness of the last fifteen years. The stories narrate the thoughts and feelings of individuals, experienced first-hand, in the classrooms of eleven countries and territories." --Book Jacket.
