Book excerpt: As technology continues to become more sophisticated, mimicking natural processes and phenomena also becomes more of a reality. Continued research in the field of natural computing enables an understanding of the world around us, in addition to opportunities for man-made computing to mirror the natural processes and systems that have existed for centuries. Nature-Inspired Computing: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications takes an interdisciplinary approach to the topic of natural computing, including emerging technologies being developed for the purpose of simulating natural phenomena, applications across industries, and the future outlook of biologically and nature-inspired technologies. Emphasizing critical research in a comprehensive multi-volume set, this publication is designed for use by IT professionals, researchers, and graduate students studying intelligent computing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The threats to privacy are well known: the National Security Agency tracks our phone calls; Google records where we go online and how we set our thermostats; Facebook changes our privacy settings when it wishes; Target gets hacked and loses control of our credit card information; our medical records are available for sale to strangers; our children are fingerprinted and their every test score saved for posterity; and small robots patrol our schoolyards and drones may soon fill our skies. The contributors to this anthology don't simply describe these problems or warn about the loss of privacy—they propose solutions. They look closely at business practices, public policy, and technology design, and ask, “Should this continue? Is there a better approach?” They take seriously the dictum of Thomas Edison: “What one creates with his hand, he should control with his head.” It's a new approach to the privacy debate, one that assumes privacy is worth protecting, that there are solutions to be found, and that the future is not yet known. This volume will be an essential reference for policy makers and researchers, journalists and scholars, and others looking for answers to one of the biggest challenges of our modern day. The premise is clear: there's a problem—let's find a solution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the 6th International Conference on Theory and applications of Satisability Testing (SAT 2003) held in Santa Margherita Ligure (Genoa, Italy), during May 5-8,2003. SAT 2003 followed the Workshops on S- is?ability held in Siena (1996), Paderborn (1998), and Renesse (2000), and the Workshop on Theory and Applications of Satis?ability Testing held in Boston (2001) and in Cincinnati (2002). As in the last edition, the SAT event hosted a SAT solvers competition, and, starting from the 2003 edition, also a Quanti?ed Boolean Formulas (QBFs) solvers comparative evaluation. There were 67 submissions of high quality, authored by researchers from all over the world. All the submissions were thoroughly evaluated, and as a result 42 were selected for oral presentations, and 16 for a poster presentation. The presentations covered the whole spectrum of research in propositional and QBF satis?ability testing, including proof systems, search techniques, probabilistic analysis of algorithms and their properties, problem encodings, industrial app- cations, specific tools, case studies and empirical results. Further, the program was enriched by three invited talks, given by Riccardo Zecchina (on "Survey Propagation: from Analytic Results on Random k-SAT to a Message-Passing algorithm for Satis?ability"), Toby Walsh (on "Challenges in SAT (and QBF)") and Wolfgang Kunz (on "ATPG Versus SAT: Comparing Two Paradigms for Boolean Reasoning"). SAT 2003 thus provided a unique forum for the presentation and discussion of research related to the theory and applications of pro- sitional and QBF satis?ability testing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been recognized since the inception of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that abstractions, problem reformulations, and approximations (AR&A) are central to human common sense reasoning and problem solving and to the ability of systems to reason effectively in complex domains. AR&A techniques have been used to solve a variety of tasks, including automatic programming, constraint satisfaction, design, diagnosis, machine learning, search, planning, reasoning, game playing, scheduling, and theorem proving. The primary purpose of AR&A techniques in such settings is to overcome computational intractability. In addition, AR&A techniques are useful for accelerating learning and for summarizing sets of solutions. This volume contains the proceedings of SARA 2002, the fifth Symposium on Abstraction, Reformulation, and Approximation, held at Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, Kananaskis Village, Alberta (Canada), August 2 4, 2002. The SARA series is the continuation of two separate threads of workshops: AAAI workshops in 1990 and 1992, and an ad hoc series beginning with the "Knowledge Compilation" workshop in 1986 and the "Change of Representation and Inductive Bias" workshop in 1988 with followup workshops in 1990 and 1992. The two workshop series merged in 1994 to form the first SARA. Subsequent SARAs were held in 1995, 1998, and 2000.

Book excerpt: Intelligent Control with LabVIEWTM is a fresh and pragmatic approach to the understanding of a subject often clouded by too much mathematical theory. It exploits the full suite of tools provided by LabVIEWTM, showing the student how to design, develop, analyze, and visualize intelligent control algorithms quickly and simply. Block diagrams are used to follow the progress of an algorithm through the design process and allow seamless integration with hardware systems for rapid deployment in laboratory experiments. This text delivers a thorough grounding in the main tools of intelligent control: fuzzy logic systems; artificial neural networks; neuro-fuzzy systems; evolutionary methods; and predictive methods. Learning and teaching are facilitated by: extensive use of worked examples; end of chapter problems with separate solutions; and provision of intelligent control tools for LabVIEWTM.
