Book excerpt: Peter Timms leads us on a journey through his adopted city of Hobart, Australia's smallest, most southerly, least prosperous, but arguably most beautiful state capital. He reveals a city in transition, shaking off its dark and troubled past to claim its special place in the contemporary world; going boutique, nice and slow', as one overseas visitor notes. From Hobart's convict legacy, its spectacular natural setting, heritage architecture and climate, to crime-rates, economic hardship and the recent disfigurements of the developers, Timms brings a wealth of fresh insights, exploring the city with a mixture of affection, admiration, frustration and sadness, interviewing a wide range of residents along the way. Those who have experienced Hobart as tourists will be surprised and intrigued by the lively, complex society this book reveals. Those who live here will surely discover their city anew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MONA has done a lot more than just rescue a flagging tourism economy. It has changed the city's body language, teaching it to stand up straight and look others squarely in the eye, even putting a swagger in its step. Peter Timms leads us on a journey through his adopted city of Hobart, Australia's smallest, most southerly, least prosperous, but arguably most beautiful state capital. From Hobart's convict legacy, its spectacular natural setting, heritage architecture and climate, to crime rates, economic hardship and new developments – not to mention the game-changer that is MONA – Timms explores the city with a mixture of affection, admiration, frustration and sadness. Those who have experienced Hobart as tourists will be surprised and intrigued by the complex society and history this book reveals. Those who live there will surely discover their city anew, propelled by the author's fondness for it. In a new introduction, Timms reflects on what has been nothing short of a tourism-driven revolution since Hobart was first published in 2009. '…sometimes it takes an outsider to skewer a city more accurately than someone with a lifetime of familiarity with it. I simply couldn't put it down.' — Leo Schofield 'Three years ago, in 2009, Peter Timms published In Search of Hobart. Now his musings and reflections about Australia's oldest city, one where sedate Georgian elegance has been beautifully if inadvertently preserved, have been reconsidered, reappraised and updated. They fit tidily and aptly into what is now a consistently charming, intellectually consequent series on Australia's capitals.' — Mark Thomas, The Canberra Times 'Timms has set a high standard. This is the kind of book that everyone travelling to Hobart and Tasmania should read because it offers thoughtful explanations of the uniqueness of the island state.' — Sydney Morning Herald

Book excerpt: Baseball Beyond Our Borders celebrates the globalization of the game while highlighting the different histories and cultures of the nations in which the sport is played. This collection of essays tells the story of America’s national pastime as it has spread across the world and undergone instructive, entertaining, and sometimes quirky changes in the process. Covering nineteen countries and a U.S. territory, the contributors show how each country imported baseball, how baseball took hold and developed, how it is organized, played, and followed, and what local and regional traits tell us about the sport’s place in each culture. But what lies in store as baseball’s passport fills up with far-flung stamps? Will the international migration of players homogenize baseball? What role will the World Baseball Classic play? These are just a few of the questions the authors pose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This WWII history chronicles the remarkable career of a brilliant British Army commander and the innovative armored vehicles he created. Joining the Royal Tank Corps in 1923, Major-General Percy Hobart quickly established himself as one of the foremost thinkers on armored warfare. By 1938 he was GOC Mobile Division, later 7th Armored Division, in Egypt. He was also known for not suffering fools—a tendency that got him briefly relieved of his command. But during World War II, Winston Churchill called Hobart back to Army service with orders to train the now-legendary 11th Armored Division. He was then tasked with designing specialist armored fighting vehicles capable of breeching the Atlantic Wall. Known as Hobart's Funnies, these unique vehicles included mine-clearing tanks, bridge-carrying tanks, flamethrowers, swimming tanks and amphibious assault vehicles. Operated by Hobart’s 79th Armored Division, they played a major part in the D-Day landings and the subsequent European campaigns. Hobart's skills played a significant part in the final Allied victory, and the specialized funnies he introduced to modern warfare have since been adopted by all armies all over the world. Drawing on official records and personal recollections, historian Richard Doherty tells the incredible story of Percy Hobart and his 79th Armored Division.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1845 an expedition led by Sir John Franklin vanished in the Canadian Arctic. The enduring obsession with the Franklin mystery, and in particular Inuit information about its fate, is partly due to the ways in which information was circulated in these imperial spaces. This book examines how the Franklins and other explorer families engaged in science, exploration and the exchange of information in the early to mid-19th century. It follows the Franklins from the Arctic to Van Diemen's Land, charting how they worked with intermediaries, imperial humanitarians and scientists, and shows how they used these experiences to claim a moral right to information. Arctic Circles and Imperial Knowledge shows how the indigenous peoples, translators, fur traders, whalers, convicts and sailors who explorer families relied upon for information were both indispensable and inconvenient to the Franklins. It reveals a deep entanglement of polar expedition with British imperialism, and shows how geographical knowledge intertwined with convict policy, humanitarianism, genocide and authority. In these imperial spaces families such as the Franklins negotiated their tenuous authority over knowledge to engage with the politics of truth and question the credibility and trustworthiness of those they sought to silence.

The other has sought to exploit magical power that would enable it to unleash long-sequestered magical beings that once destroyed ancient kingdoms. A young bladesmith, Ereben Leaf, is swept into this hidden conflict when his family is inexplicably murdered-a crime for which he is blamed. With his only clue being the advice of a hated adversary to "seek out a Stump named Whittig Trench," he flees the one home he has ever known, into lands peopled by races named only in tales told to children. This journey will place at center stage his ignorance of the secrets contained within the dagger forged by his own hands and coveted by his relentless pursuers. The fate of civilization hangs in the balance.

Book excerpt: WITH PASSION AND DARING, THEY SEIZED THE PROMISE OF A NEW LAND... The seventh book in the dramatic and intriguing story about the colonisation of Australia: a country built on blood, passion, and dreams. The upheavels in the new colony are frequent and radical. A governor has recently been fired, a rebel government has been forced to retreat, and a new governor has arrived in Australia. Will this mean redemption for the freed prisoners in the exile colony? The country needs its loyal fighters — and Jenny Hawley and her family certainly belong there in spite of their past. Above all, the new governor needs men of Andrew Hawley and Justin Broome's calibre to be able to transform the country into a thriving, independent nation. Rebels and outcasts, they fled halfway across the earth to settle the harsh Australian wastelands. Decades later — ennobled by love and strengthened by tragedy — they had transformed a wilderness into a fertile land. And themselves into The Australians.
