Drawing upon ten years of research into this most common-yet complex and often puzzling-human phenomenon, Dr. Robert Provine, the world's leading scientific expert on laughter, investigates such aspects of his subject as its evolution, its role in social relationships, its contagiousness, its neural mechanisms, and its health benefits. This is an erudite, wide-ranging, witty, and long-overdue exploration of a frequently surprising subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Pursuit . . ." reinvents the life of Katherine Mansfield (1988-1923), the modernist writer who revolutionized the short story, created the only writing Virginia Woolf was ever jealous of, and was consumed by tuberculosis at thirty-four. Intertwined into the story are Katherine's letter and journal writings that reveal her volatile relationships with her husband, her caregiver Ida, and her extraordinary passion for life as she fights against a disease that saps her energy and steals her time to write. The story begins in London where Mansfield has married her long-time lover John Middleton Murry. Soon after, on her thirtieth birthday, she is diagnosed with tuberculosis and told she has a few years to live if she stops writing, moves to a sanatorium, and promises to live a quiet, passive life. Too young for such a prognosis she attempts a home cure that fails. Then, a wandering consumptive with a fierce grip on life and her writing tools, she travels from London to Paris, to the Riviera and to the Alps in pursuit of a cure, not only for herself, but through her work, perhaps, for others."In Pursuit . . . The Katherine Mansfield Story Retold" is an absorbing tale of desire, impermanence, and atonement. A haunting exploration of one woman's powerful determination to live a full and challenging life in spite of the limitations forced upon her by illness.

Book excerpt: Trisha Chaudhary is a daring ex-RAW agent chasing criminals when a chance encounter in a nightclub washroom brings her face-to-face with the charming and intriguing Krish Rajvanshi. Unbeknownst to her, he is the powerful director of an elite global law enforcement organization - GLEN. After witnessing her impressive combat skills, Krish extends an invitation for Trisha to join his covert team. Though initially hesitant, she accepts, setting the stage for electrifying missions where their professionalism is tested by an undeniable attraction. Sparks fly as they attempt to deny their magnetic pull while tackling high-stakes operations against international smugglers and deadly cartels. But amidst these life-threatening crises, will they discover just how deeply they've come to rely on each other? Will the thrill of the chase finally give way to the allure of forbidden romance? Can they protect their hearts while taking down ruthless criminal networks? A pulse-pounding tale of espionage and sparks of passion, ultimately culminating in a journey to love. Note: Krish and Trisha are side characters of my Political Romance Trilogy (Book 1- The Gamble, Book 2- The Maze, Book 3 - The Checkmate). Although this book can be read as a standalone, it would be more interesting if you read the Political romance Trilogy first.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psychology of Humor: Theoretical Perspectives and Empirical Issues examines theoretical perspectives and empirical issues concerning the psychology of humor. Theoretical views of humor range from the physiological to the sociological and anthropological. The relations between humor, laughter, and smiling are considered, along with the connection between collative variables and arousal. Comprised of 13 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the history of thought and major theoretical issues on humor, followed by a description of models of different aspects of humor. The next section deals with empirical issues in which selected research areas are given detailed attention. The relations between humor, laughter, and smiling, on the one hand, and collative variables and arousal, on the other, are analyzed. Subsequent chapters explore the cognitive origins of incongruity humor by comparing fantasy assimilation and reality assimilation; a two-stage model for the appreciation of jokes and cartoons; and the social functions and physiological correlates of humor. The relationship between arousal potential and funniness of jokes is also explored, together with humor judgments as a function of reference groups and identification classes. The final chapter presents an annotated bibliography of published papers on humor in the research literature and an analysis of trends between 1900 and 1971. This monograph will be of interest to psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, and behavioral scientists.

Book excerpt: The Politics of Laughter in the Social Media Age: Perspectives from the Global South brings to critical and intellectual attention the role of humour in the digital era in the Global South. Many citizens of the Global South live disempowered and precarious lives. Digital media and humour, as chapters in the volume demonstrate, have empowered these citizens through engagement with power and their peers, enabling a pursuit of a better future. Contributors to the volume, while alive to challenges associated with the digital divide, highlight the potentials of social media and humour to engage and seek redress on issues such as corruption, human rights violations, racism and sexism. Contributors expertly analyse memes, videos, cartoons and other social media texts to demonstrate how citizens mimic, disrupt, ridicule and challenge status quo. This book caters for academics and students in media and communication studies, political studies, sociology and Global South studies.

I've worked in the customer service industry for more than twenty years, so needless to say, I have witnessed a lot that have entitled, ignorant, and arrogant people in their natural environment. It's thanks to these people that I have been able to sharpen my sarcasm. It was only recently though that some coworkers convinced me to start writing down the comments to keep them for future laughter. I've decided to break this book into sections based on whether the comment is off the top of my head, a cliche kind of remark, a mix of lines from the entertainment industry, and even some profound lines to make you think.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andreas Magdalos grew up in South Africa. He befriended a young black boy named Matthew Matsimani. To Andreas and Matthew, their friendship seemed to be nothing extraordinary ... until Andreas’s mother conveyed her outrage. And why not? At the time, apartheid—racial segregation—was the law in South Africa. But Andreas saw this separation as injustice and wondered why the rest of the country seemed so blind. Soon, the opinions of Andreas get him into trouble with the South African police. In an effort to separate their son from the battle he hopes to fight for the black citizens of Africa, his parents send him to Greece. Despite love and adventure, far from the segregation turmoil, Andreas can’t shake the feeling that he belongs in South Africa. He returns, and two childhood friends find themselves reunited as they battle side-by-side for the removal of apartheid in their country. In Pursuit of Freedom is a depiction of the South African apartheid from the perspective of a white man and a black man, friends together. Both feel the injustice of the law. Both are willing to risk lives and reputations to fight for civil rights. In the center of a troubled nation, they band together for one cause, despite the rampant devastation reaped on their lives. Their story proves that equality does not come without cost.

Book excerpt: "In his mid-twenties, Jimmy was bored, boring, unfulfilled and underachieving. He wasn't exactly depressed, but he was very sad. Think of a baby owl whose mum has recently died in a windmill accident. He was that sad. This book tells the story of how Jimmy turned it around and got happy, through the redemptive power of dick jokes. Written to take advantage of the brief window between the end of lockdown and Jimmy getting cancelled for saying something unforgivable to Lorraine Kelly, this book is as timely as it is unnecessary. Because you might be interested in Jimmy's life but he's damn sure you're a lot more interested in your own, Before & Laughter is about both of you. But mainly him. It tells the story of Jimmy's life - the transformation from white-collar corporate drone to fake-toothed donkey-laugh plastic-haired comedy mannequin - while also explaining how to turn your own life around and become the you you've always dreamt of being. At just $30, it's cheaper than Scientology, quicker than therapy, and significantly less boring than church"--Publisher's description.

Using metaphors, vignettes, jokes, innuendoes and other "right-hemispheric" language games, Dr. Watzlawick shows how we can make everyday life miserable and inflate trivialities beyond recognition.
