Book Synopsis Talking About by : Elmar Unnsteinsson
Download or read book Talking About written by Elmar Unnsteinsson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining new insights from cognitive science and speech art theory, Unnsteinsson develops a compelling theory of singular reference which avoids well-known puzzles and objections. The theory, called Edenic intentionalism, is grounded in a mechanistic perspective on explanation in cognitive science and a new Gricean account of speaker meaning and speaker reference. Talking About: An Intentionalist Theory of Reference develops an account of the mental state of identity confusion and separates questions about the nature of representational acts and representational states. Unnsteinsson proposes a division of labour, but Edenic intentionalism is strictly a theory of intentional, mind-directed representational acts, taking speech acts as its paradigm case. Talking About: An Intentionalist Theory of Reference argues that mental mechanisms ought to be postulated to explain human cognitive capacities. Pragmatic competence is the capacity to successfully produce utterances with a communicative intention. By examining the characteristic function and malfunction of the mechanism for referential competence, the study shows that confused reference should be understood as a type of malfunction. This is the core thesis of Edenic intentionalism: that the identity confusion disrupts the normal function of the speech art of reference.
Download or read book The Hindus written by Wendy Doniger and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engrossing and definitive narrative account of history and myth that offers a new way of understanding one of the world's oldest major religions, The Hindus elucidates the relationship between recorded history and imaginary worlds. Hinduism does not lend itself easily to a strictly chronological account: many of its central texts cannot be reliably dated even within a century; its central tenets karma, dharma, to name just two arise at particular moments in Indian history and differ in each era, between genders, and caste to caste; and what is shared among Hindus is overwhelmingly outnumbered by the things that are unique to one group or another. Yet the greatness of Hinduism - its vitality, its earthiness, its vividness - lies precisely in many of those idiosyncratic qualities that continue to inspire debate today. Wendy Doniger is one of the foremost scholars of Hinduism in the world. With her inimitable insight and expertise Doniger illuminates those moments within the tradition that resist forces that would standardize or establish a canon. Without reversing or misrepresenting the historical hierarchies, she reveals how Sanskrit and vernacular sources are rich in knowledge of and compassion toward women and lower castes; how they debate tensions surrounding religion, violence, and tolerance; and how animals are the key to important shifts in attitudes toward different social classes. The Hindus brings a fascinating multiplicity of actors and stories to the stage to show how brilliant and creative thinkers - many of them far removed from Brahmin authors of Sanskrit texts - have kept Hinduism alive in ways that other scholars have not fully explored. In this unique and authoritative account, debates about Hindu traditions become platforms from which to consider the ironies, and overlooked epiphanies, of history.

Book excerpt: The marriage between the Dauphin of France and the Archduchess of Austria was purely a political arrangement, born out of their two countries' desire for an alliance. Marie Antoinette hoped for nothing more than friendship between herself and Louis-Auguste when they set off for a month in the countryside. But in this idyllic setting, she begins to yearn for something more. Could romance be in store for the young newlyweds? Will they discover the key to happiness in their arranged marriage, or will the pressures of their families' expectations keep their feelings locked away? This fictional short-story is based on the lives of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI, and suggest what their marriage might have been like at its start, when they were only teenagers themselves.

Book Synopsis Odyssey of an Airhead by : Malgorzata Duszak
Download or read book Odyssey of an Airhead written by Malgorzata Duszak and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-05-19 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is written as a journal by a naive Catholic girl from Poland as she is thrown into the world, where she discovers herself in the spiritual maze of beliefs and concepts. She goes through life as it presents her with new experiences and she makes her way through them in the incessant longing to know and understand more. She doesn't offer dry facts of what she discovers and believes, she doesn't attempt to tell the readers what the truth is, or what reality is all about. She innocently and eagerly asks questions, but not necessarily always gives the answers. She is not anyone's teacher, but through her personal odyssey, spanning a period of about eight years, she compels the casual reader to think just a little less casually. The embracement of all human encounters, philosophies, and ways of living remains her key to the higher understanding of the experience of life. Although perceived as an "airhead" by some, she enthusiastically takes us through simple, but large, ideas; the religious and spiritual concepts the humanity developed to explain the inexplicable. Through her philosophical and esoteric growth the reader feels accompanied on their own inner search. Being a part of life's journey toward the Absolute, and going at the same time through the ordinary human experience full of pain and emotions qualifies anyone to talk about what unfolds along their way. This time, the journey is hers, and she invites everyone to join.

Book Synopsis Educational Fabulations by : Diane Conrad
Download or read book Educational Fabulations written by Diane Conrad and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-25 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly original collection presents speculative fiction as fiction-based research to re-imagine education in the future. Given the particular convergence of economic and governmental pressures in educational institutions today, schools represent imaginative sites especially well-suited to interrogation through an SF lens. The relevance for education of the exploration and interrogation of themes related to technology, human nature, and social organization is evident; yet the speculative fiction approach is unique in its harnessing of creative capacities to envision alternatives. The contributions in this collection are generated from educational experience and research, drawing on scholarship in curriculum studies and teacher education and on the authors' experiences and imaginations as teachers, teacher educators, educational scholars, and human beings.

Book Synopsis Arms and the Women by : Reginald Hill
Download or read book Arms and the Women written by Reginald Hill and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pascoe’s wife becomes a moving target in this “delightfully quirky, literate, often explosively funny” mystery in the acclaimed series (Publishers Weekly). Reginald Hill “raised the classical British mystery to new heights” when he introduced pugnacious Yorkshire Det. Inspector Andrew Dalziel and his partner, the callow Sgt. Peter Pascoe (The New York Times Book Review). Their chafing differences in education, manners, technique, and temperament made them “the most remarkable duo in the annals of crime fiction” (Toronto Star). Adapted into a long-running hit show for the BBC, the Gold Dagger Award–winning series is now available as ebooks. Ellie Pascoe is a novelist, former campus radical, overprotective mother—and as an inspector’s wife, on high alert of suspicious behavior. When she thwarts an abduction plot, her husband, Peter, and his partner, Andrew Dalziel, assume a link to one of their past cases. An attack on Ellie’s best friend, Daphne, and a series of threatening letters from Ellie’s foiled kidnappers prove them wrong. Packed off to an isolated seaside safe place, Ellie, Daphne, and their bodyguard, DC Shirley Novello, aren’t about to lie in wait for the culprits’ next move. They’re on the offensive. No matter how calculated their plot of retaliation is, they have no idea just how desperately someone wants Ellie out of the picture. Or how insanely epic the reasons are. Arms and the Women is the 19th book in the Dalziel and Pascoe Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.
