Book Synopsis Sleep, Memory and Synaptic Plasticity by : Sushil K. Jha
Download or read book Sleep, Memory and Synaptic Plasticity written by Sushil K. Jha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-25 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years there has been growing interest among the scientific community in investigating sleep and how it affects the memory and other brain functions. It is now well established that sleep helps in memory consolidation and induction of neural plasticity, and that short-term deprivation of either total sleep or rapid eye movement sleep alone can induce memory deficits very quickly. Quantitative and qualitative changes in sleep architecture after different training tasks further suggest that discrete memory types may require specific sleep stage/s for optimal memory consolidation, and studies indicate that sleep deprivation alters synaptic plasticity and membrane excitability in the hippocampal neurons and synaptic up-scaling in the cortical neurons. Further, sleep alteration during pregnancy may increase the risk of depression and adversely affect maternal-child relationships, parenting practices, family functioning, and children's development and general wellbeing. This book coherently discusses all these aspects, with a particular focus on the possible role of sleep in memory consolidation and synaptic plasticity. It also highlights the detrimental effects of sleep loss on mental health, the immune system and cognition. This book is a valuable reference resource for students and researchers working in the area of sleep, memory, or neuronal plasticity.

Download or read book The Head Trip written by Jeff Warren and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2009-03-18 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A world at once familiar and unimaginably strange exists all around us, and within us – it is the vast realm of consciousness. In The Head Trip, science journalist Jeff Warren explores twelve distinct, natural states of consciousness available to us in a twenty-four-hour day, each state offering its own kind of knowledge and insight – its own adventure. The hypnagogic state, when our minds hover between waking and sleeping, can be a rich source of creativity and even compassion. Then there’s the Watch, an almost magical waking experience in the middle of the night that has been all but lost to electric light and modern sleep patterns. Daydreaming and trance, lucid dreaming, the Zone, and the Pure Conscious Event – from sleep laboratory to remote northern cabin, neurofeedback clinic to Buddhist retreat, Warren visits them all. Along the way, he talks to neuroscientists, chronobiologists, anthropologists, monks, and many others who illuminate his stories with cutting-edge science and age-old wisdom. On this trip, all are welcome and no drugs are required: all you need to pack are a functioning cerebrum and an open mind. Replete with stylish graphics and brightened by comic panels conceived and drawn by the author, The Head Trip is an instant classic, a brilliant and original description of the shifting experience of consciousness that’s also a practical guide to enhancing creativity and mental health. This book does not just inform and entertain – it shows how every one of us can expand upon the ways we experience being alive.
Book Synopsis Sleep of Memory by : Patrick Modiano
Download or read book Sleep of Memory written by Patrick Modiano and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newest best-seller by Patrick Modiano is a beautiful tapestry that brings together memory, esoteric encounters, and fragmented sensations Patrick Modiano’s first book since his 2014 Nobel Prize revisits moments of the author’s past to produce a spare yet moving reflection on the destructive underside of love, the dreams and follies of youth, the vagaries of memory, and the melancholy of loss. Writing from the perspective of an older man, the narrator relives a key period in his life through his relationships with several enigmatic women—Geneviève, Martine, Madeleine, a certain Madame Huberson—in the process unearthing his troubled relationship with his parents, his unorthodox childhood, and the unsettled years of his youth that helped form the celebrated writer he would become. This is classic Modiano, utilizing his signature mix of autobiography and invention to create his most intriguing and intimate book yet.

Book excerpt: Sleep and Aging provides a unique and timely collection of review articles that cover the gamut of basic and clinical aspects of sleep and the abnormalities in sleep associated with aging and neurological disorders that occur during aging. From the evolutionary basis of sleep and its normal functions in processes such as learning and memory, to considerations of the roles of sleep abnormalities in neurological disorders such as depression, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, the chapters are written by experts in the field. Several chapters focus on signalling pathways involved in sleep regulation and abnormalities in sleep, including those activated by serotonin and BDNF. Basic and clinical research on insomnia, sleep apnea and other disorders of sleep, are covered thus providing students and scientists at all levels with a valuable source of information to advance their understanding of this important topic in aging, biology and medicine. The circuits in the brain involved in sleep regulation, their neurochemistry, how they are altered in disorders of sleep and current clinical treatments of various sleep disorders are reviewed. The important role of sleep disturbances in neurodegenerative disorders is described and research in this particular area is leading to a better understanding of the relationships between synaptic plasticity, neuronal degeneration and the clinical manifestations of disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and depression. This book is a must for scientists, as well as non-scientists, who are interested in the neurobiology of aging, sleep and neurodegenerative disorders.
Book Synopsis Zen and the Brain by : James H. Austin
Download or read book Zen and the Brain written by James H. Austin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999-06-04 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A neuroscientist and Zen practitioner interweaves the latest research on the brain with his personal narrative of Zen. Aldous Huxley called humankind's basic trend toward spiritual growth the "perennial philosophy." In the view of James Austin, the trend implies a "perennial psychophysiology"—because awakening, or enlightenment, occurs only when the human brain undergoes substantial changes. What are the peak experiences of enlightenment? How could these states profoundly enhance, and yet simplify, the workings of the brain? Zen and the Brain presents the latest evidence. In this book Zen Buddhism becomes the opening wedge for an extraordinarily wide-ranging exploration of consciousness. In order to understand which brain mechanisms produce Zen states, one needs some understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and chemistry of the brain. Austin, both a neurologist and a Zen practitioner, interweaves the most recent brain research with the personal narrative of his Zen experiences. The science is both inclusive and rigorous; the Zen sections are clear and evocative. Along the way, Austin examines such topics as similar states in other disciplines and religions, sleep and dreams, mental illness, consciousness-altering drugs, and the social consequences of the advanced stage of ongoing enlightenment.

Book Synopsis Fragmentation in Sleep and Mind: Linking Dissociative Symptoms, Sleep, and Memory by : Sue Llewellyn
Download or read book Fragmentation in Sleep and Mind: Linking Dissociative Symptoms, Sleep, and Memory written by Sue Llewellyn and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fragmented, dissociated consciousness can characterize the mind in both wake and sleep states. Dissociative symptoms, during sleep, include vivid dreaming, nightmares, and alterations in objective sleep parameters (e.g., lengthening of REM sleep). During waking hours, dissociative symptoms exhibit disparate characteristics encompassing memory problems, excessive daydreaming, absentmindedness, and impairments and discontinuities in perceptions of the self, identity, and the environment. Llewellyn has theorized that a progressive and enduring de-differentiation of wake and dream states of consciousness eventually results in schizophrenia; a lesser degree of de-differentiation may have implications for dissociative symptoms. Against a background of de-differentiation between the dream and wake states, the papers in this volume link consciousness, memory, and mental illness with a special interest for dissociative symptoms.
Book Synopsis Sleep: Evolution and Functions by : Vibha M. Jha
Download or read book Sleep: Evolution and Functions written by Vibha M. Jha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the evolution of sleep and its possible function in the higher invertebrates and vertebrates, including humans. It describes the current concept of sleep and its functions, based on research on the mammalian system. To date, electrophysiological recordings of the brain waves, muscle activity, and eye movements are the only tools available for characterizing the sleep architecture in the majority of animals. In mammals and birds, only two distinct types of sleep are found – non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Since the discovery of REM sleep, studies have been performed to understand the purpose of the two distinct sleep states in higher vertebrates (birds and mammals), and how REM sleep was evolved. The book summarizes the role of both REM and NREM sleep in the proper functioning of the brain and body. It covers various aspects of the role of sleep in important physiological processes, including memory consolidation, induction of synaptic plasticity, energy restoration, enhancing immune response, and maturation of neuronal circuitries during early life. Lastly, the book reviews the effects of chronic/acute sleep deprivation on memory consolidation, obesity, and the immune system in animal models and humans.

This book is recommended for scholars interested in psychology, media and film studies, literary studies, and communication studies.
Download or read book Sleep Demons written by Bill Hayes and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A lovely weave of memory and science, great characters and compassionate humor” from the author of Sweat: A History of Exercise (Anne Lamott). We often think of sleep as mere stasis, a pause button we press at the end of each day. Yet sleep is full of untold mysteries—eluding us when we seek it too fervently, throwing us into surreal dream worlds when we don’t, sometimes even possessing our bodies so that they walk and talk without our conscious volition. Delving into the mysteries of his own sleep patterns, Bill Hayes marvels, “I have come to see that sleep itself tells a story.” An acclaimed journalist and memoirist—and partner of the late neurologist Oliver Sacks—Hayes has been plagued by insomnia his entire life. The science and mythology of sleep and sleeplessness form the backbone to Hayes’s narrative of his personal battles with sleep and how they colored his waking life, as he threads stories of fugitive sleep through memories of growing up in the closet, coming out to his Irish Catholic family, watching his friends fall ill during the early years of the AIDS crisis in San Francisco, and finding a lover. An erudite blend of science and personal narrative, Sleep Demons offers a poignant introduction to the topics for which Hayes has since become famous, including art, eros, city life, the history of medical science, and queer identity. “This intimate and beautifully written book brings scientific research alive in a heartfelt and deeply personal narrative.” —The Guardian “Memoir, history, and science come together and apart again in a book that reads very much like a dream.” —Out magazine
