The book provides an important opportunity for students to learn the core concepts of physics and understand how those concepts apply to their lives and to the world around them. Due to the comprehensive nature of the material, we are offering the book in three volumes for flexibility and efficiency. Coverage and Scope Our University Physics textbook adheres to the scope and sequence of most two- and three-semester physics courses nationwide. We have worked to make physics interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from fundamental to more advanced concepts, building upon what students have already learned and emphasizing connections between topics and between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses and future careers. The organization and pedagogical features were developed and vetted with feedback from science educators dedicated to the project. Book excerpt: "In a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, Philip W. Anderson has made many fundamental contributions to physics. As codified in his oft-quoted phrase "More is Different", Anderson has been the most forceful and persuasive proponent of the radical, but now ubiquitous, viewpoint of emergent phenomena: truly fundamental concepts that can and do emerge from studies of Nature at each layer of complexity or energy scale. Anderson's ideas have also extended deeply into other areas of physics, including the Anderson-Higgs mechanism and the dynamics of pulsars. PWA90: A Lifetime of Emergence is a volume of original scientific essays and personal reminiscences of Philip W Anderson by experts in the field, that were presented as part of "PWA90: Emergent Frontiers of Condensed Matter" meeting held at Princeton in December 2013 to highlight Anderson's contributions to physics"--

Book Synopsis Advanced Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations by : John Dirk Walecka
Download or read book Advanced Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations written by John Dirk Walecka and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2010-03-22 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the physical world was revolutionized in the twentieth century — the era of “modern physics”. This book, aimed at the very best students, extends the coverage of the theoretical groundwork of today's physics presented in the previous volume: Introduction to Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations (Vol. I). Typically, students have to wade through several courses to see many of these topics. The goal is to give them some idea of where they are going, and how things fit together, as they go along. The present book focuses on the following topics: reformulation of quantum mechanics, angular momentum, scattering theory, lagrangian field theory, symmetries, Feynman rules, quantum electrodynamics, including higher-order contributions, path integrals, and canonical transformations for quantum systems. Many problems are included that enhance and extend the coverage. The book assumes a mastery of the material in Vol. I, and the continued development of mathematical skills, including multivariable calculus and linear algebra. Several appendices provide important details, and any additional required mathematics. The reader should then find the text, together with the appendices and problems, to be self-contained. The aim is to cover the framework of modern theoretical physics in sufficient depth that things “make sense” to students, and, when finished, the reader should have an elementary working knowledge in the principal areas of theoretical physics of the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis Building The H Bomb: A Personal History by : Kenneth W Ford
Download or read book Building The H Bomb: A Personal History written by Kenneth W Ford and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging scientific memoir, Kenneth Ford recounts the time when, in his mid-twenties, he was a member of the team that designed and built the first hydrogen bomb. He worked with — and relaxed with — scientific giants of that time such as Edward Teller, Enrico Fermi, Stan Ulam, John von Neumann, and John Wheeler, and here offers illuminating insights into the personalities, the strengths, and the quirks of these men. Well known for his ability to explain physics to nonspecialists, Ford also brings to life the physics of fission and fusion and provides a brief history of nuclear science from the discovery of radioactivity in 1896 to the ten-megaton explosion of “Mike” that obliterated a Pacific Island in 1952.Ford worked at both Los Alamos and Princeton's Project Matterhorn, and brings out Matterhorn's major, but previously unheralded contribution to the development of the H bomb. Outside the lab, he drove a battered Chevrolet around New Mexico, a bantam motorcycle across the country, and a British roadster around New Jersey. Part of the charm of Ford's book is the way in which he leavens his well-researched descriptions of the scientific work with brief tales of his life away from weapons.
Book Synopsis More Physics With Matlab (With Companion Media Pack) by : Daniel Green
Download or read book More Physics With Matlab (With Companion Media Pack) written by Daniel Green and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text continues the exploration of the use of MATLAB tools and features in visualizing physical processes. The symbolic math packages are important in solving those problems which are amenable to closed form solution, while the numerical packages are used for the remaining problems. The results for the solutions use the MATLAB graphics packages to help visualize the properties of the solutions. User dialogues are designed to allow users to change the input parameters in order to see how the dynamics of the solutions depends on the parameters of the specific problem. In particular movies are used to display the dynamical evolution of solutions in time.
Book Synopsis Physics And Culture by : Brian Cotterell
Download or read book Physics And Culture written by Brian Cotterell and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of physics in our culture is examined from the time of Newton to the present day. It has three parts: an introduction to physics and two parts covering the roles of Newtonian and Modern/Postmodern physics. It is shown how popularization enabled physics to become part of our culture, while the topics discussed include religion, philosophy, politics, literature, the visual arts, and music. An underlying theme is that physics is an intimate part of our culture which, together with the other sciences, has had a wide general influence that cannot be ignored. The book has been written for all that are genuinely interested in culture. It is well referenced and illustrated, and suitable for the general public, students and academics who are interested in bridging the sciences and humanities in today's era of specialization.
Book Synopsis Physics in the Life Sciences: Physics for Life Science Students by : Robijn Bruinsma
Download or read book Physics in the Life Sciences: Physics for Life Science Students written by Robijn Bruinsma and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2025-05-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides undergraduate life science students taking a general physics class with physics that is directly relevant to the life sciences. It develops the basic concepts of physics in a manner that they can be directly used to explain the 'engineering' of living organisms, from the operation of the skeleton to the interaction between DNA and proteins. Topics such as the physics of statics, elasticity, fluids, and physical chemistry that are rich in life-science applications are emphasized. A clear understanding of this material should provide students with a solid foundation for future biochemistry, molecular biology, and physiology students. It should prepare life science students for tests, such as the MCAT exam.
