Download or read book Shakespeare in the Light written by Paul Menzer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare in the Light convenes an accomplished group of scholars, actors, and teachers to celebrate the legacy of renowned Shakespearean and co-founder of the American Shakespeare Center, Ralph Alan Cohen. Each contributor pivots off a production at the ASC’s Blackfriars Playhouse to explore Cohen’s abiding passion, the performance of the plays of William Shakespeare under their original theatrical conditions. Whether interested in early modern theatre history, the teaching of Shakespeare to high school students, or the performance of Shakespeare in twenty-first century America, each essay sheds light on the professing of Shakespeare today, whether on the page, on the stage, or in the classroom. Guided by the spirit of “universal lighting” – so central to the aesthetic of the American Shakespeare Center – Shakespeare in the Light illuminates the impact that the ASC and its founder have made upon the teaching, editing, scholarship, and performance of Shakespeare today.

Book excerpt: Presenting a background study of honor, the author compares ancient concepts with the sympathetic restatements of them that appeared during the Renaissance. He places Shakespeare's plays in the context of these Renaissance ideas, pointing up the sharp conflict between Christian morality and the revived pagan humanism. Book Synopsis Souls with Longing by : Bernard J. Dobski
Download or read book Souls with Longing written by Bernard J. Dobski and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of William Shakespeare vividly represent for our admiration and study a pageant of souls with longing in whose wake we ceaselessly follow. Through some of his most memorable characters, Shakespeare illuminates the nature and character—as well as consequences—of our distinctively human passions and ambition, in particular our desire for and pursuit of both honor and love. The contributors to this collaborative volume (scholars in English Literature, Political Philosophy, and the Humanities) argue that Shakespeare has much to teach us about our longing for honor and love in particular, and thus about who we are, what we desire, and why. Through sustained reflection on the Shakespearean portraits of honor and love, which are the focus of the chapters in Souls With Longing, we become more keenly aware of our own humanity and come to know ourselves more profoundly. As the abiding popularity of his works aptly demonstrates, Shakespeare’s unforgettable portraits of souls with longing—his representations of honor and love—continue to exert undeniable sway over our political, moral, and romantic imaginations.

Book Synopsis Memory in Shakespeare's Histories by : Jonathan Baldo
Download or read book Memory in Shakespeare's Histories written by Jonathan Baldo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinguishing feature of Shakespeare’s later histories is the prominent role he assigns to the need to forget. This book explore the ways in which Shakespeare expanded the role of forgetting in histories from King John to Henry V, as England contended with what were perceived to be traumatic breaks in its history and in the fashioning of a sense of nationhood. For plays ostensibly designed to recover the past and make it available to the present, they devote remarkable attention to the ways in which states and individuals alike passively neglect or actively suppress the past and rewrite history. Two broad and related historical developments caused remembering and forgetting to occupy increasingly prominent and equivocal positions in Shakespeare’s history plays: an emergent nationalism and the Protestant Reformation. A growth in England’s sense of national identity, constructed largely in opposition to international Catholicism, caused historical memory to appear a threat as well as a support to the sense of unity. The Reformation caused many Elizabethans to experience a rupture between their present and their Catholic past, a condition that is reflected repeatedly in the history plays, where the desire to forget becomes implicated with traumatic loss. Both of these historical shifts resulted in considerable fluidity and uncertainty in the values attached to historical memory and forgetting. Shakespeare’s histories, in short, become increasingly equivocal about the value of their own acts of recovery and recollection.

Book Synopsis In Arden: Editing Shakespeare - Essays In Honour of Richard Proudfoot by : Gordon McMullan
Download or read book In Arden: Editing Shakespeare - Essays In Honour of Richard Proudfoot written by Gordon McMullan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of new and specially commissioned essays by an eminent team of Shakespeare scholars, focusing on the particular issues relating to the editing of Shakespeare and other Renaissance texts. The editing of dramatic and other literary texts has always been an important aspect of literary studies. In recent years, editing and the theoretical frameworks that underlie editing practices have become a lively and controversial focus of debate, sparked both by philosophical discussions on 'the death of the author' and by the technological challenges presented by the possibilities of electronic texts. Most national and international conferences on literature and drama include sessions on textual studies and editing, and a number of monographs address particular issues relating to the editing of Shakespeare and other Renaissance texts, but this is the first overall survey of the current state of the field. The essays have been commissioned to honour Professor Richard Proudfoot, Senior General Editor of the Arden Shakespeare, and an internationally recognised authority in the field of Shakespeare textual scholarship, who retired from King's College London in 1999 after 35 years. This is a well-planned, focused and co-ordinated volume makes a significant contribution to Shakespeare studies. The contributors are a formidable and global group of scholars, representing both traditional and contemporary viewpoints. They include a number of Arden editors, past and present, as well as scholars who have edited texts for the main competitors.

Book Synopsis Elizabethan Theater by : R. B. Parker
Download or read book Elizabethan Theater written by R. B. Parker and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabethan Theater is a collection of essays offered in celebration of the long career of Samuel Schoenbaum. Throughout his career as biographer, bibliographer, historian, critic, and editor of scholarly journals, he has greatly enriched our appreciation of Shakespeare and his fellows. These essays celebrate the many ways in which he has enhanced our understanding through his skill in balancing historical contexts with a recognition and respect for the importance of individual authorship. Distinguished scholars from many countries, representing many points of view, have chosen to honor Schoenbaum by contributing essays that explore the four overlapping areas with which his own research has mainly been concerned: biographical scholarship, the concept of authorship, the hand of the author perceived within the play, and the multiple historical contexts that helped to determine how Elizabethan plays were written and received.
