Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chin up, now. Got to have thick skin down here. In 1974 London, three musicians and their manager seal themselves inside an underground recording studio to complete an Americana album, unaware that materials in the walls are driving them to the brink of insanity. As artistic, social, and racial tensions flare, the atmosphere grows thornier, the music grows stranger, and Everglade Studio's mixture of creativity and claustrophobia demands its pound of flesh. Longlisted for the 2023 BBC Writersroom Popcorn Award for Best New Writing, In Everglade Studio is a ferocious comedic thriller from Nathaniel Brimmer-Beller, featuring original music by Nathaniel and Aveev Isaacson. This edition was published to coincide with the run at The Hope Theatre in London, in April 2024.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Know where you are? No. But I know where the train will be. In this tightly-wound noir thriller written by Nathaniel Brimmer-Beller (In Everglade Studio, Press, Blood Red Apples & Deep Gold Honey), four characters navigate shifting alliances in the middle of the night in a seaside pub. A newcomer has missed her train. She waits for the next one, the last of the night, in a quiet pub near the station. Before long, a charming regular begins to chat. He soon proposes a deal to her, involving a gun, a hefty payout, and fleeing on the approaching train. As the evening ticks by, the regular and the bartender try to sweeten the deal, the port city's sadistic sheriff makes an appearance, and as the train whistle gets closer, the newcomer must decide... This edition was published to coincide with the world premiere at London's Hope Theatre in September 2024, reopening the Hope as the first full-length play of its new era.

Book excerpt: "Totch Brown's memoirs of vanished days in the Ten Thousand Islands and the Everglades--the last real frontier in Florida, and even today the greatest roadless wilderness in the United States--are invaluable as well as vivid and entertaining, for Totch is a natural-born story-teller, and his accounts of fishing and gator hunting as well as his life beyond the law as gator poacher and drug runner are evocative and colorful, fresh and exciting."--from the foreword by Peter Matthiessen In the mysterious wilderness of swamps, marshes, and rivers that conceals life in the Florida Everglades, Totch Brown hung up his career as alligator hunter and commercial fisherman to become a self-confessed pot smuggler. Before the marijuana money rolled in, he survived excruciating poverty in one of the most primitive and beautiful spots on earth, Chokoloskee Island, in the mangrove keys known as the Ten Thousand Islands located at the western gateway to the Everglades National Park. Until he wrote this memoir--recollections from his childhood in the twenties that merge with reflections on a way of life dying at the hands of progress in the nineties--Totch had never read a book in his life. Still, his writing conveys the tension he experienced from trying to live off the land and within the laws of the land. Told with energy and authenticity, his story begins with the handful of souls who came to the area a hundred years ago to homestead on the high ground formed from oyster mounds built and left by the Calusa Indians. They lived close to nature in shacks built of tin or palmetto fans; they ate wild meat, Chokoloskee chicken (white ibis), swamp cabbage, even--when they were desperate--manatee; and they weathered all manner of natural disaster from hurricanes to swarms of "swamp angels" (mosquitoes). In his grandpa's day, Totch writes, outlaws and cutthroats would "shoot a man down just as quick as they'd knock down an egret, especially if he came between them and the plume birds." His grandparents were both contemporaries of Ed J. Watson, the subject of Peter Matthiessen's best-selling Killing Mr. Watson, and Totch is featured in the recent award-winning PBS film Lost Man's River: An Everglades Adventure with Peter Matthiessen. He also appeared in Wind Across the Everglades, the 1957 Budd Schulberg movie in which Totch and Burl Ives sing some of Totch's Florida cracker songs. Loren G. "Totch" Brown was born in Chokoloskee, Florida, in 1920. After purchasing his first motorboat at the age of thirteen (and retiring from formal schooling after the seventh grade) he worked as an alligator hunter, commercial fisherman, crabber, professional guide, poacher, marijuana runner, singer, and songwriter.

Book excerpt: Creating Musical Theatre features interviews with the directors and choreographers that make up today's Broadway elite. From Susan Stroman and Kathleen Marshall to newcomers Andy Blankenbuehler and Christopher Gattelli, this book features twelve creative artists, mostly director/choreographers, many of whom have also crossed over into film and television, opera and ballet. To the researcher, this book will deliver specific information on how these artists work; for the performer, it will serve as insight into exactly what these artists are looking for in the audition process and the rehearsal environment; and for the director/choreographer, this book will serve as an inspiration detailing each artist's pursuit of his or her dream and the path to success, offering new insight and a deeper understanding of Broadway today. Creating Musical Theatre includes a foreword by four-time Tony nominee Kelli O'Hara, one of the most elegant and talented leading ladies gracing the Broadway and concert stage today, as well as interviews with award-winning directors and choreographers, including: Rob Ashford (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying); Andy Blankenbuehler (In the Heights); Jeff Calhoun (Newsies); Warren Carlyle (Follies); Christopher Gattelli (Newsies); Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes); Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde); Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon); Randy Skinner (White Christmas); Susan Stroman (The Scottsboro Boys); Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys); and Anthony Van Laast (Sister Act).

Book excerpt: The United Nations declared the year 2002 as "The Year of the Mountains" and encouraged countries all over the world to have environmental conferences regarding the conservation of mountains. The Conference for the Caribbean and the Americas was held in Cuba, and Clyde Butcher was invited to photograph the mountains of Cuba for the conference. He spent three weeks photographing from the Sierra Maestra of the east coast to the mogote region of the west coast--rain forests, waterfalls, and cliffs that drop off into a perfect ocean. The beauty and majesty of Cuba's natural landscape are captured in his intimate compositions, their focus on shape and light, the horizon and the sky.
