Book excerpt: To mark the centenary of its foundation, MI5 opened its archives for the very first time to an independent historian, resulting in an unprecedented publishing event. In The Defence of the Realm, Christopher Andrew reveals the precise role of the Security Service in twentieth-century British history, from its founding by Captain Kell of the British Army in October 1909, through two world wars, and up to and including its present roles in counter-espionage and counter-terrorism. Readers will learn how MI5 has been managed, what its relationship has been with the government, where it has triumphed and where it has failed. Despite the sensitive nature of the materials, no restrictions were placed on the judgments made by the author. The Defence of the Realm also uncovers the identities of previously unknown enemies of Britain and the West whose activities the Service has brought to light; adds significantly to our knowledge of many celebrated events and notorious individuals; and definitively lays to rest a number of persistent myths. Above all, it shows the place of this hitherto extremely secretive organization within the UK. Few books could offer such an immediate and extraordinary expansion in our understanding of British history over the past century.

Book excerpt: Those who voice these misgivings typically favour the creation and strengthening of supra-national bodies, such as the European Union and the agencies of the UN, the break-up of the United Kingdom and its full integration inside a European federal union, as well as ever increasing global governance more generally. In Defence of the Realm offers a vigorous defence of the nation state from a classical liberal perspective and a resounding refutation of all who would disparage nationalistic affiliations in the supposed name of liberal values and ideals.

Book Synopsis In Defence of Fantasy by : Ann Swinfen
Download or read book In Defence of Fantasy written by Ann Swinfen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern fantasy novel might hardly seem to need a defence, but its position in contemporary literature in the 1980s was still rather ambivalent. Many post-war writers had produced highly successful fantasy novels, some phenomenal publishing successes had occurred in the field, and an increasing number of universities throughout the English-speaking world now included the literary criticism of fantasy as part of their English Literature courses. None the less some critics and academics condemned the whole genre with a passion that seemed less than objectively critical. In this book, originally published in 1984, Dr Ann Swinfen presents a wide-ranging and comprehensive view of fantasy: what it is, what it tries to achieve, what fundamental differences distinguish it from mainstream realist fiction. She concentrates on the three decades from 1945, when a new generation of writers found that Tolkein had made fantasy ‘respectable’. Her approach is thematic, rather than by individual author, and she brings out the profound moral purpose that underlies much modern fantasy, in a wide range of works, both British and American, such as Russell Hoban’s The Mouse and His Child, C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia and Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea Trilogy.

Download or read book The Realm of Reason written by Christopher Peacocke and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2004 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Realm of Reason is a manifesto for a new rationalism in philosophy. Christopher Peacocke develops an original theory of what makes a thinker entitled to form a given belief. The theory is articulated in three principles of rationalism, which together imply that all entitlement has an element that is independent of experience. Peacocke elaborates this rationalism in detail for the classical issues of perceptual knowledge, induction, and the status of moral thought. Hisnew generalized approach to epistemology has applications throughout philosophy, and it will interest all concerned with knowledge, truth, and rationality.

Book excerpt: This paper is a case study in the wartime evolution of tactical doctrine. Besides providing a summary of German Infantry tactics of the First World War, this study offers insight into the crucial role of leadership in facilitating doctrinal change during battle. It reminds us that success in war demands extensive and vigorous training calculated to insure that field commanders understand and apply sound tactical principles as guidelines for action and not as a substitute for good judgment. It points out the need for a timely effort in collecting and evaluating doctrinal lessons from battlefield experience. --Abstract.

Book Synopsis Rural Communities in Late Byzantium by : Fotini Kondyli
Download or read book Rural Communities in Late Byzantium written by Fotini Kondyli and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-17 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late Byzantium faced economic, political, and demographic crises. This book argues for the ability of rural communities to transform their socioeconomic strategies and maintain resilience in the face of these, especially in the context of islands. It seeks to reinstate ordinary people in the historical narrative and reintroduce them as active participants in the events of the period, pointing to their ability not only to react to change, but also to initiate it. Combining new archaeological evidence with archival material pertaining to the islands of Lemnos and Thasos in the Northern Aegean, it provides concrete examples of Byzantine socio-economic strategies that successfully mitigated the various crises and thus contributes to a diachronic perspective on crisis management. The result is to rethink the nature of the Late Byzantine period, and to question the ways in which we have come to divide historical periods into 'good' or 'bad'.
