Book excerpt: Evan Archer has always preferred peace and solitude to the loud antics of his large, hard-to-navigate family. But when Archer Enterprises needs a new creative director, Evan jumps at the chance to claim the job he’s always wanted. Moving home is easier than he expected, but Evan isn’t prepared for the stunning A-list celebrity hiding out in his family’s garage apartment. Following a major tabloid scandal, movie star Alaina Pierce escapes to Ribbon Ridge. She’s immediately drawn to the quiet, picturesque town and the incredibly sexy—if a little quirky—Evan. He may be built like a Greek god, but he’s honest and straightforward… so different from the Hollywood types she normally dates. Their attraction is undeniable, but Alaina can’t elude the paparazzi forever, and Evan has no interest in being in the limelight. When the secret she’s been keeping is exposed, the idea of Evan—of real love and a family like the Archers—could vanish in an instant.

Download or read book Trust written by Geoffrey Hosking and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today there is much talk of a 'crisis of trust'; a crisis which is almost certainly genuine, but usually misunderstood. Trust: A History offers a new perspective on the ways in which trust and distrust have functioned in past societies, providing an empirical and historical basis against which the present crisis can be examined, and suggesting ways in which the concept of trust can be used as a tool to understand our own and other societies. Geoffrey Hosking argues that social trust is mediated through symbolic systems, such as religion and money, and the institutions associated with them, such as churches and banks. Historically these institutions have nourished trust, but the resulting trust networks have tended to create quite tough boundaries around themselves, across which distrust is projected against outsiders. Hosking also shows how nation-states have been particularly good at absorbing symbolic systems and generating trust among large numbers of people, while also erecting distinct boundaries around themselves, despite an increasingly global economy. He asserts that in the modern world it has become common to entrust major resources to institutions we know little about, and suggests that we need to learn from historical experience and temper this with more traditional forms of trust, or become an ever more distrustful society, with potentially very destabilising consequences.
Download or read book INERTIA written by Brandon Walker and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In INERTIA: Seven Principles of Leadership in Motion, professional speaker and trainer Brandon Walker explains how the ideas that define the physical laws of inertia may be applied to dynamic, effective leadership. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion, while objects at rest tend to stay at rest. The heart of leadership lies in the leader's ability to generate positive, forward motion in people's lives and to continue to influence those people throughout their journey. Using a combination of pop-culture illustrations (everything from Battlestar Galactica to Frank Sinatra) and personal anecdotes, Brandon defines each of the seven leadership principles (Intent, Necessity, Energy, Resilience, Trust, Imagination, and Authenticity) and explains how to apply them to one's own leadership experience.
