Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Constable's Country The Valley of the Stour contains much of interest apart from the story of Constable and his pictures, and I have set down whatever seemed worthy of record, whether of wayside incident or local tradition. But the title of this book is no misnomer. NO name is more indelibly associated with the country which it describes than the name of Constable. His knowledge of the fair and fertile country around the Stour was more intimate than that Of Gainsborough. It inspired a large proportion of his work. In later life, at Hampstead and elsewhere, his heart was often in Suffolk. Standing before his easel he saw, as in a mirror, his native county, and in fancy lingered beside what Stevenson so aptly styled the lilied lowland waters of that Shire. Constable, early in his career, felt that he could paint his own homeland as he could paint no other. You know, he once wrote, I have always succeeded best with my native scenes. They have always charmed me, and I hope they always will. They charmed him to the end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book John Constable written by Anthony Bailey and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-03-31 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1776 in East Anglia near the river Stour, John Constable was destined for his father's business of milling and grain-shipping. But he was obdurately opposed to this and persuaded his family he should become an artist instead. In the same determined spirit, he wooed Maria Bicknell in the teeth of opposition from her formidable grandfather, and persisted in painting landscapes at a time when history paintings and portraits were the fashion. Sometimes sharp and sarcastic, and often depressed, Constable in fact possessed a warm gift for intimate friendship. This is revealed in his letters to John Dunthorne, village handyman and housepainter, and to his best friend and patron, archdeacon John Fisher, to whom he wrote: 'I have a kingdom of my own, both fertile and populous - my landscape and my children'. In recent times, after a period of relative ignominy, Constable's influence on British landscape painting has been re-acknowledged, he has been more widely exhibited and his reputation has been reestablished as one of the masters of his genre. This important and absorbing biography explores his life and work, and highlights the dramatic tension between the two.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Constable: Lucas: With a Descriptive Catalogue of the Prints They Did Between Them Found him there. But the countryside of his birth - that retained, to the end, his-deepest affection, and inspired so much of his work I had never seen it till the mid-october of 1899 and then I found that to see it was to appreciate, even more deeply, the art and the truth of the master. Sqtravelling to Colchester, I remember, on a Saturday morning, I took up my abode at the Cups made sure of my bear ings lunched and then, in a direction not chosen carelessly, went for my afternoon walk. I strolled in the direction of Constable's villages; knowing well that I should stop several miles short of them. My walk was in an upland country, north or north-east of the Colchester railway station - it was a long field-walk. And there, 'without specially looking for, or specially expecting him, i I at once found Constable. A day or two afterwards, driving to his villages-7. Book Synopsis Shakespeare's Greenwood by : George Morley
Download or read book Shakespeare's Greenwood written by George Morley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Greenwood: The Customs of the Country Why it is so I cannot say. Leafy War wickshire was an impenetrable forest. Even in modern times, as Elton tells us in his Origins of English History, it was so thickly wooded that a squirrel might leap from tree to tree for nearly the whole length of the county; and the character of the country at an earlier period is gathered from the fact that in 1250 the woods were so thick hereabout that the Constable of the Shire was commanded to cut down six acres in breadth between Coventry and Warwick for the better security of foot passengers; so under those circumstances it is no marvel that the language of the hardy woodlanders should not have suffered much from the inroads of Court gallants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "COMMON SENSE (Political Classics Series)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents Common Sense was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution, and became an immediate sensation. Written in clear and persuasive prose, Thomas Paine marshaled moral and political arguments to encourage common people in the Colonies to fight for egalitarian government. It. Common Sense made public a persuasive and impassioned case for independence, which before the pamphlet had not yet been given serious intellectual consideration. He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity, structuring Common Sense as if it were a sermon. Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as "the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era". Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was an English-American political activist, philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary. One of the Founding Fathers of the United States, he authored the two most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution, and he inspired the rebels in 1776 to declare independence from Britain. Paine's ideas reflected Enlightenment-era rhetoric of transnational human rights.
