Book excerpt: The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in copper based oxides is an event of major importance not only with respect to the physical phenomenon itself but also because it definitely shows that solid state chemistry, and especially the crystal chemistry of oxides, has a crucial place in the synthesis and understanding of new materials for future appli cations. The numerous papers published in the field of high Tc supercon ductors in the last five years demonstrate that the great complexity of these materials necessitates a close collaboration between physicists and solid state chemists. This book is based to a large extent on our experience of the crystal chemistry of copper oxides, which we have been studying in the laboratory for more than twelve years, but it also summarizes the main results which have been obtained for these compounds in the last five years relating to their spectacular superconducting properties. We have focused on the struc ture, chemical bonding and nonstoichiometry of these materials, bearing in mind that redox reactions are the key to the optimization of their supercon ducting properties, owing to the importance of the mixed valence of copper and its Jahn-Teller effect. We have also drawn on studies of extended defects by high-resolution electron microscopy and on their creation by ir radiation effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unexpected and therefore really amazing discovery of J. G. Bednorz and K. A. R32 Miiller , that certain oxide compounds enter a superconducting state at temperatures above 30 K pushed research on superconductivity into the limelight of science in general in a way that seemed reserved for a while for high-energy or particle physics only. The common interest was then even more aroused when subsequent work rather quickly established that in the same class of compounds (oxides), critical temperatures of superconductivity above R36 the boiling point of nitrogen could be achieved . It might therefore be expected, that this entire review would solely deal with superconductivity at high temperatures, i. e. , above the boiling point of hydrogen. From my point of view, however, any unexpected occurrence of superconductivity is a challenge to scientists interested either in the physics of this phenomenon or in its materials-science aspects. In this respect, the last ten years have been quite revolutionary in the sense that on various occasions, superconductivity was discovered in materials whose physical properties were not obviously favourable for adopting this ground state. This period started with the observation that homogeneous coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic order in the same material was possible. Later it was found that electrons whose effective mass was tremendously enhanced by magnetic interactions, may also form a superconducting state, namely in materials that were subsequently identified as heavy electron superconductors.

Book excerpt: Unconventional superconductivity (or superconductivity with a nontrivial Cooper pairing) is believed to exist in many heavy-fermion materials as well as in high temperature superconductors, and is a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The remarkable progress achieved in this field has not been reflected in published monographs and textbooks, and there is a gap between current research and the standard education of solid state physicists in the theory of superconductivity. This book is intended to meet this information need and includes the authors' original results.

Book excerpt: Experimental results of the effects of high pressure and/or high magnetic fields are presented for three different classes of compounds; magnetic systems based on high temperature superconductors, a heavy fermion system, and a ferromagnetic semiconductor. The experiments involving high temperature superconductors consisted of substituting either Gd for Y or Zn for Cu in the canonical Y-based 1-2-3 compound. For the Gd substituted compound, high pressure had a small positive effect on T$\sb{\rm N}$, the magnetic ordering temperature, in both the superconducting and non-superconducting phases. This result is discussed in terms of a modified RKKY-like interaction between the Gd ions. For the Zn-doped compound T$\sb{\rm C}$ dropped rapidly upon the addition of small amounts of Zn with T$\sb{\rm C}$ going to zero at approximately 10 at.% Zn, which is unusual because Zn is a divalent non-magnetic impurity. Additionally, T$\sb{\rm C}$ decreased upon application of high pressure in contrast to the undoped system which showed T$\sb{\rm C}$ increasing with pressure. These results indicate that the d-holes associated with the Cu-O hybridized bonds are becoming localized in the presence of Zn. For the heavy fermion compound U(In$\sb{\rm 1-x}$Sn$\sb{\rm x}$)$\sb3$, large enhancements in the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility, indicative of heavy fermion behavior, were observed near x = 0.6. Theoretical fits to Fermi liquid type theories show reasonable agreement with experimental results. For U(Ga$\sb{\rm 1-x}$ Ge$\sb{\rm x}$)$\sb3$ no enhancement in the specific heat or magnetic susceptibility was observed. However one unusual property of this compound is that the magnetic susceptibility increased from low to room temperature indicative of a very high spin fluctuation temperature, and therefore very strong f-electron-conduction electron hybridization. The third compound, UFe$\sb4$P$\sp{12}$ is the first known U-based ferromagnetic semiconductor. This compound displayed a large shift in T$\sb{\rm C}$ with the application of high pressure. This result appears consistent with a Bloembergen-Rowlands coupling mechanism between the U-atoms. The appendix contains a discussion of results obtained for the semimagnetic semiconductor (Cd, Fe)Se which showed the absence of bound magnetic polarons in contrast to (Cd, Mn)Se. This shows that the Fe has zero moment in zero magnetic field.

Book excerpt: Strongly correlated electron systems constitute a rich reservoir for interesting physical phenomena. The competition and interplay between the localized magnetic moments in partially filled d or f electron systems and the itinerant conduction electrons states lead to novel phenomena such as complex magnetic properties, unconventional superconductivity, non-Fermi-liquid behavior, and the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism. Such intriguing physical phenomena can be achieved by tuning the system with a control parameter, such as chemical composition, applied pressure, and magnetic field. It is interesting to study the chemical substitution effects on the correlated f electron system along with magnetic field to explore their complex phase diagram. This dissertation work focuses on experimental studies of the Ce and Eu substituted filled skutterudite system PrPt4Ge12 over a wide range of doping, magnetic field, and temperature using heat capacity measurements. The first study will focus on the specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements performed on the Pr[subscript 1-x]Ce[subscript x]Pt4Ge12 crystals. We have found that Ce monotonically suppresses the superconducting transition temperature T[subscript c] and a small Ce concentration of x = 0.14 brings the T[subscript c] to as low as 0.6 K. We further have demonstrate that small Ce substitution does not affect the multiband nature of superconductivity seen previously in the parent compound PrPt4Ge12. On the other hand, our data provide evidence that one of the two gaps is nodal in the parent compound and that Ce substitution gradually suppresses the value of the nodal gap. To understand the possible interplay between superconductivity and magnetism, we study the same parent system PrPt4Ge12, this time substituting Pr with europium. The compound so formed is Pr[subscript 1-x]Eu[subscript x]Pt4Ge12 whose end members are superconductor (x = 0) and antiferromagnetic (x = 1) at lower temperatures, so that there is the possibility of interaction between superconductivity and magnetism in the intermediate doping range. The increase of Eu concentration leads to a suppression of the superconducting transition temperature as in the case of cerium substitution. There is a low temperature heat capacity anomaly present over the whole doping range. Our analysis of the heat capacity data shows that in alloys with x = 0.5 the Schottky peaks in the heat capacity in the superconducting state appear to be due to Zeeman splitting by an internal magnetic field. Our theoretical analysis suggests that this internal magnetic field is a result of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations between the europium ions. We further investigated the effect of Eu substitution on the Pr site through heat capacity measurements on the same system in an applied magnetic field. The low temperature heat capacity peaks seen in the samples with x

Book excerpt: By browsing about 10 000 000 scientific articles of over 200 major journals mainly in a 'cover to cover approach' some 200 000 publications were selected. The extracted data is part of the following fundamental material research fields: crystal structures (S), phase diagrams (also called constitution) (C) and the comprehensive field of intrinsic physical properties (P). This work has been done systematically starting with the literature going back to 1900. The above mentioned research field codes (S, C, P) as well as the chemical systems investigated in each publication were included in the present work. The aim of the Inorganic Substances Bibliography is to provide researchers with a comprehensive compilation of all up to now published scientific publications on inorganic systems in only three handy volumes.
