Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High school graduates are enrolling in college without the necessary skills to successfully enter college-level courses. This project was created with the goal of improving writing skills in a diverse 10th grade English classroom at a high school located in North County San Diego. The project is a series of lesson plans that have students annotate the writing prompt, view the teacher write a model text, create a verbal rough draft through the use of the IPad note section, peer-edit, and create final drafts. The project used the most recent research in secondary writing education to focus on creating sample texts that students can use as a model for their own writing. When teachers model their own meta-cognitive strategies while creating a piece of writing, thinking becomes visible; thus, students are able to use their own ideas to create meaningful, coherent texts.
