Book excerpt: Electricity will play a greater role in the transport and building sectors and all decarbonisation scenarios point to the increasing electrification of the energy system. To reach EU climate change targets, however, electricity will need to come increasingly from low carbon sources, especially (but not only) from variable renewable energy sources. Both trends - the electrification of sectors and the need to integrate electricity from variable renewables - mean that the electricity sector should become more flexible. This report reflects the discussions held in the CEPS Energy Climate House Task Force on Creating a Market Design for Flexibility in EU Electricity Markets, which met between April and September 2017. The Task Force formulated a number of recommendations in the areas of short-term and balancing markets; grid reinforcement and cross-zonal capacity allocation; aggregation; priority dispatch; DSOs (distribution system operators); and sectoral integration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electricity grids, being one of the most significant machines ever constructed, play a pivotal role in modern society. They require high operational flexibility to balance supply and demand and to ensure reliable operation. The transition to renewable energy resources has introduced challenges, such as their inherent variability and unpredictability. The decline of traditional thermal power plants further strains grid stability. This shift towards renewable energy is transforming the electricity sector, requiring innovative grid management approaches. This dissertation addresses the pressing need for flexibility within electricity grids. It focuses on two strategies: upgrading existing generation and refining market designs. Existing research in this field often lacks granularity, realism, and fails to consider the non-homogeneous nature of electricity systems. Uncertainty and interactions between resource types and market changes are also often neglected. This dissertation addresses these gaps and brings to light several insights that were not evident under existing modeling frameworks. Chapter 2 investigates the impact of enhancing existing natural gas combined cycle generators on the operational dynamics and profitability across different classes of generators. Chapter 3 examines the implementation of ramp products in real-time markets, while Chapter 4 extends the analysis to consider the effects of multi-interval dispatch. The results highlight the need for detailed modeling that takes into account resource types, market design, and uncertainty to optimize system flexibility. In conclusion, this dissertation provides insights into addressing flexibility in the evolving energy landscape and emphasizes the importance of modeling realistic systems. It demonstrates the value of a nuanced approach that analyzes the interaction between multiple resource types and market design changes to enhance flexibility, reliability, and efficiency in electricity markets.

Book excerpt: Power systems must be actively managed to maintain a steady balance between supply and demand. This is already a complex task as demand varies continually. But what happens when supply becomes more variable and less certain, as with some renewable sources of electricity like wind and solar PV that fluctuate with the weather? to what extent can the resources that help power systems cope with the challenge of variability in demand also be applied to variability of supply? How large are these resources? and what share of electricity supply from variable renewables can they make possible? There is no one-size-fits-all answer. the ways electricity is produced, transported and consumed around the world exhibit great diversity. Grids can cross borders, requiring co-ordinated international policy, or can be distinct within a single country or region. and whether found in dispatchable power plants, storage facilities, interconnections for trade or on the demand side, the flexible resource that ensures the provision of reliable power in the face of uncertainty likewise differs enormously. Written for decision makers, Harnessing Variable Renewables: a Guide to the Balancing Challenge sheds light on managing power systems with large shares of variable renewables. It presents a new, step-by-step approach developed by the IEA to assess the flexibility of power systems, which identifies the already present resources that could help meet the twin challenges of variability and uncertainty.

Book excerpt: The global energy system is undergoing a profound transformation from a system based mainly on fossil fuels to a low-carbon one based on variable renewable energy (VRE), such as wind power and solar power, to achieve the 2050 Paris Agreement. By 2050, solar and wind power, with more than 14,500 GW installed capacity, would account for three-fifths of global electricity generation. This transformation comes with significant challenges since high VRE shares will greatly increase system flexibility requirements for balancing supply and demand. Accordingly, all sectors of the power system need to unlock further requisite flexibility through technology, business, and policy innovations, including power supply, transmission, distribution, storage, and demand.

This book was released on 2024-09-18 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the inherent volatility and randomness, the increasing share of energy from renewable resources presents a challenge to the operation of multi-energy systems with heterogeneous energy carriers such as electricity, heat, hydrogen, etc. These factors will make the systems hard to adjust their supply and demand flexibly to maintain energy balance to ensure reliability. Further, this hinders the development of a low-carbon and economically viable energy system. By making full use of the synergistic interaction of generation, transmission, load demand, and energy storage, a three-fold approach focused on quantifying demand flexibility, evaluating supply capabilities, and enhancing resilience can unlock the flexibility potential across various sectors of new energy systems. This approach provides an effective means of facilitating the transition from conventional energy systems to low-carbon, clean-energy-oriented paradigms. However, huge challenges arising from renewable energy pose great obstacles to the aforementioned solution pathway. The main objectives of this Research Topic are: 1. Develop advanced carbon emission accounting and measurement techniques for emerging multi-energy systems 2. Design effective methods for predicting renewable electricity generation 3. Proposed efficient methods for quantitative assessment of uncertainty from renewables and loads 4. Put forward advanced evaluation, optimization, and planning strategies incorporating diverse flexibility resources 5. Design multifaceted market mechanisms and collaborative frameworks balancing economics and low carbon footprint 6. Develop operational control and resilience-enhancement techniques for distribution networks under large-scale distributed energy integration

Book excerpt: This book highlights recent advances in the identification, prediction and exploitation of demand side (DS) flexibility and investigates new methods of predicting DS flexibility at various different power system (PS) levels. Renewable energy sources (RES) are characterized by volatile, partially unpredictable and mostly non-dispatchable generation. The main challenge in terms of integrating RES into power systems is their intermittency, which negatively affects the power balance. Addressing this challenge requires an increase in the available PS flexibility, which in turn requires accurate estimation of the available flexibility on the DS and aggregation solutions at the system level. This book discusses these issues and presents solutions for effectively tackling them.

This book gives an assessment of these developments, focusing on the issues that are critical for successful electricity market liberalization. One lesson is that it is a long process which requires strong on-going government involvement and commitment. Experiences and examples in the study are mainly drawn from the UK, Australian, Nordic and North Eastern United States (the PJM interconnection) markets, which have all operated with considerable success for a number of years. They have improved efficiency without jeopardizing system security. These markets are described in greater detail in annexes of the book but the main analysis focuses on key issues rather than on specific countries and regions or specific market models. The study explores different solutions used in those relatively robust markets and the remaining challenges."--Publisher description.
