Book excerpt: The purpose of this applied study was to solve the problem of low student attendance for two elementary schools in southwest Mississippi by reviewing interventions designed to improve average daily attendance among elementary students. This study sought to review previous interventions and determine which initiatives worked to improve student attendance using qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative methods such as interviews and document analysis were conducted with staff and administrators who work within the school district, ensuring attendance regulations are being met. Their responses, along with a review of related literature, provided insights into recent initiatives undertaken to address attendance issues. Quantitative methods, specifically a teacher survey, was designed based on themes resulting from the literature review. This feedback helped to place the problem of attendance in perspective and was used as a baseline measure to determine if previous initiatives had any impact on student attendance rates. A search of the literature indicated that numerous studies address the causes of student absences, absenteeism, and truancy, yet there is limited data that addressed what schools are or are not doing to combat the increasing problem of excessive absences in the elementary grades. Data gathered from semi-structured interviews, surveys, and document analysis provided a basis for remedying this problem. Using indicators obtained from research data may provide school districts with a starting point in which to develop or improve existing strategies for improving attendance at the elementary grades.

Department of Educational Leadership, December 2022.This study was designed to evaluate the outcome of an action research-oriented, multi-modal intervention intended to lessen chronic student absenteeism among students in Grade 1 through Grade 3 within a Title I district in North Carolina. The theory of action was that if the perception of the value of early education held by parents of chronically absent students was sharpened and the children themselves were (a) engaged positively as individuals on a daily basis with a specific adult and (b) rewarded for being present at school, then the children would attend school more consistently as evidenced by the school attendance records. Chronic absenteeism was a national problem among both high school and elementary school students. Anecdotal evidence suggests that absenteeism has worsened since the advent of COVID-19. The inherent complexity of absenteeism makes it even more challenging to address. Students in poverty were most susceptible to being chronically absent, thus widening the achievement gaps between them and their non-economically challenged peers. Researchers have suggested that parents' beliefs about the value of early education contribute to students' attendance patterns. The three-pronged intervention I implemented in this case study began by ascertaining parents' perceptions schoolwide of the value of schooling, focusing on a small number of children who are chronically absent and inviting their parents to enter into an ongoing dialog with me throughout the intervention during which their children engage positively on a daily basis with an adult in the school environment and were rewarded for consistent attendance.

Attendance improvement programs that implement strategies combating barriers that prevent students from attending school regularly are proving to have the best results. The purpose of this research study was to complete a program evaluation of a district-wide focus on attendance program containing positive practices. The research found that implementing a school-wide focus on attendance, supported at the district level, significantly improved overall yearly average daily attendance at the elementary school level. The school-wide focus on attendance program also significantly decreased the number of days missed by chronically absent students. Parental beliefs regarding the importance of regular school attendance were also examined in this study.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this case study examines how school leaders, community leaders, parents, and students work to decrease absenteeism and improve individual student attendance through a collaborative effort in a Nebraska high school. Efforts to reduce both the mobility and absenteeism rates of students is one intervention to address out-of-school factors that affect the academic achievement of children of poverty. An attendance team at the high school consisted of both external and internal stakeholders. The team met weekly to reduce absenteeism by focusing on individual student and the student's family, using a variety of methods to sustain ongoing collaboration with students, parents and the community. The data indicated family life and mental health were two barriers to improved student attendance rates. However, strong relationships were a supporting factor to improved student attendance. The themes from this study revealed two major findings: awareness of the many factors that can attribute to student absenteeism and the need for school-community collaboration to reduce absentee rates and improve student attendance.
