Book excerpt: This thesis describes the search for Dark Matter at the LHC in the mono-jet plus missing transverse momentum final state, using the full dataset recorded in 2012 by the ATLAS Experiment. It is the first time that the number of jets is not explicitly restricted to one or two, thus increasing the sensitivity to new signals. Instead, a balance between the most energetic jet and the missing transverse momentum is required, thus selecting mono-jet-like final states. Collider searches for Dark Matter have typically used signal models employing effective field theories (EFTs), even when comparing to results from direct and indirect detection experiments, where the difference in energy scale renders many such comparisons invalid. The thesis features the first robust and comprehensive treatment of the validity of EFTs in collider searches, and provides a means by which the different classifications of Dark Matter experiments can be compared on a sound and fair basis.

It includes a detailed description of the run-1 system, important operational challenges, and the upgrade for run-2. The nature of dark matter, which accounts for roughly 25% of the energy-matter content of the universe, is one of the biggest open questions in fundamental science. The analysis is based on the full set of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at √s = 8 TeV. Special attention is given to the experimental challenges and analysis techniques, as well as the overall scientific context beyond particle physics. The results complement those of non-collider experiments and yield some of the strongest exclusion bounds on parameters of dark matter models by the end of the Large Hadron Collider run-1. Details of the upgrade of the ATLAS Central Trigger for run-2 are also included.

Book excerpt: A search is presented for an excess of events with large missing transverse momentum in association with at least one highly energetic jet, in a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The results are interpreted using a set of simplified models for the production of dark matter via a scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, or axial vector mediator. Additional sensitivity is achieved by tagging events consistent with the jets originating from a hadronically decaying vector boson. This search uses jet substructure techniques to identify hadronically decaying vector bosons in both Lorentz-boosted and resolved scenarios. This analysis yields improvements of 80% in terms of excluded signal cross sections with respect to the previous CMS analysis using the same data set. No significant excess with respect to the standard model expectation is observed and limits are placed on the parameter space of the simplified models. Mediator masses between 80 and 400 GeV in the scalar and pseudoscalar models, and up to 1.5 TeV in the vector and axial vector models, are excluded.

Book excerpt: This article reports on a search for dark matter pair production in association with bottom or top quarks in 20.3 fb-1 of pp collisions collected at √s = 8 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events with large missing transverse momentum are selected when produced in association with high-momentum jets of which one or more are identified as jets containing b-quarks. Final states with top quarks are selected by requiring a high jet multiplicity and in some cases a single lepton. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations and limits are set on the mass scale of effective field theories that describe scalar and tensor interactions between dark matter and Standard Model particles. Limits on the dark-matter-nucleon cross-section for spin-independent and spin-dependent interactions are also provided. These limits are particularly strong for low-mass dark matter. Using a simplified model, constraints are set on the mass of dark matter and of a colored mediator suitable to explain a possible signal of annihilating dark matter.

The search uses 20.3 fb-1 of \(\sqrt{s{\mathrm{}}} = 8\) TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT>120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between EmissT>150 GeV and EmissT>700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model. Limits on the production of an invisibly decaying Higgs-like boson leading to similar topologies in the final state are presented.

Book excerpt: "This dissertation presents a novel search for new physics using the full Run 2 dataset of 137.6 fb-1 collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid during proton-proton runs of the Large Hadron Collider. The new physics in question is dark matter production in a unique signature called semi-visible jets. Semi-visible jets are produced when a new massive mediator particle emerges from the proton-proton interaction. This mediator then decays to unstable dark matter particles which hadronize and produce a mixture of standard model particles and stable dark matter particles. The stable dark particles are only detectable as missing transverse momentum, and the standard particles are detectable as jets. This produces a signature where two jets are produced, one of which is aligned with the total missing transverse momentum. The search is presented in two phases: a classical cut-based search which uses a series of cuts based on event kinematics to select events which look like the signal signature, and a machine learning based search which uses a technique called boosted decision trees to identify semi-visible jets in a more powerful but model-dependent way. No evidence for Physics Beyond the Standard Model is observed in either search. The classical search excludes the possibility that the mediator could have a mass between 1.5 TeV and 3.98 TeV, while the model-dependent search excludes mediators with masses between 1.5 TeV and 5.08 TeV. The results are interpreted as limits in different theoretical contexts such as compressed supersymmetric models, theories that foresee extra-spatial dimensions and in the dark matter scenario. In the latter the limits are then compared with those obtained by other ATLAS analyses and by experiments based on completely different experimental techniques, highlighting the role of the mono-jet results in the context of dark matter searches.Lastly, a set of possible analysis improvements are proposed to reduce the main uncertainties that affect the signal region and to increase the discovery potential by further exploiting the information on the final state.

We analyze a sample of Tevatron pp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7 fb−1 recorded by the CDF II detector. In events with large missing transverse energy and one energetic jet, we find good agreement between the standard model prediction and the observed data. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the dark matter production rate. The limits are translated into bounds on nucleon-dark matter scattering rates which are competitive with current direct detection bounds on spin-independent interaction below a dark matter candidate mass of 5 GeV/c2, and on spin-dependent interactions up to masses of 200 GeV/c2.

Book excerpt: As successful as the Standard Model of particle physics has been it still has several major shortcomings which range from unanswered theoretical questions to a lack of any explanation for observed phenomena such as dark matter. One proposed theory for physics beyond the Standard Model which provides solutions for some of these issues is supersymmetry. This dissertation presents a search for supersymmetry using 2.3 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data. This data was collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS detector at the LHC during 2015. This search focuses on top squark pair production where the produced stops both decay to an all hadronic final state. These decays are characterized by multiple jets and missing transverse momentum. A baseline search region is defined to be sensitive to signal processes which occur at rates many orders of magnitude lower than Standard Model processes. The sensitivity to various signal models is improved by dividing this baseline region into distinct categories. Events with an unreconstructed lepton from leptonic W boson decays constitute the primary background. There are also significant contributions from events where a Z boson decays invisibly to neutrinos especially in bins with higher missing transverse momentum. Events with multijet production where one jet has been severely mis-measured as well as those with a pair of top quarks and an invisibly decaying Z boson also have a small presence in the search region. The contributions from these processes to the search region is estimated using data control regions. No statistically significant deviations from the predicted background yields are observed. The results are interpreted in terms of exclusion limits using the Simplified Model Spectrum framework. Stop and neutralino masses are probed up to 780 GeV and 260 GeV respectively.
