Book Synopsis Improving GNVQ Retention and Completion by : Peter Davies
Download or read book Improving GNVQ Retention and Completion written by Peter Davies and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet, which draws heavily on the findings of a major study of the causes of student withdrawal from General National Vocational Qualifications (GNVQ) courses in Britain, explains how student retention and completion can be improved at each stage of students' progress through a further education college. The booklet begins with background information on the study methodologies and conclusions, information about the publications arising from the project, and guidelines for using the booklet. In each of the next five sections, various issues identified during the survey are discussed in a format that includes some or all of the following: issues, checklists for addressing them, illustrative case studies, and pertinent quotations. The following topics are addressed: staff perceptions of GNVQ's, the accuracy of published rates of noncompletion, and staff versus student perceptions of reasons for noncompletion; planning for GNVQs (volume and timing of assignments); course guidance; program implementation (providing pastoral and learning support and balancing theory and practice); and course review and evaluation. The final chapter summarizes the study conclusions and lists seven types of further support for schools and colleges. Also included are an annotated listing of 24 useful resources and addresses and a list of 18 references. (MN)

Download or read book Balancing the Skills Equation written by Hayward, Geoff and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2004-10-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments worldwide assume that national competitiveness can be improved by developing workforce skills. This book critically examines this 'high skills' vision at both policy and practice levels. It challenges an oversimplified policy rhetoric that underestimates the complexity of the processes involved in developing a skilled workforce. The book focuses on key issues relating to the high skills agenda: skills and political economy; different investment strategies for producing skills; qualification systems and learning. A multidisciplinary team of authors from a range of disciplines, including economics, management and education, provides the cross-cutting international and comparative analysis. Editorial comment links their explorations to wider questions of skill formation processes and overarching questions are addressed through in-depth analysis of the roles of higher education, apprenticeship and formal school learning in skill formation.

Book excerpt: `This is a very simple but notable piece of work....they have done a service to education in providing evidence (and there is remarkably little elsewhere) that continuous professional development does pay off in terms of a better education for pupils in schools' - School Leadership and Management Much debate currently concerns the value of education research : how is it perceived by practitioners and students ? Book Synopsis EBOOK: First Generation Entry into Higher Education by : Liz Thomas
Download or read book EBOOK: First Generation Entry into Higher Education written by Liz Thomas and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2006-12-16 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book does not focus simply on the employment prospects of first generation higher education entrants but rather engages with the wider possibilities of social engagement and transformation that can arise from participation in higher education. It provides essential reading for administrators, policy-makers, managers, academics and indeed anyone else interested in how to widen the socio-economic base of higher education so that the process is informed by a significant concern with social justice and reducing inequality.” Rosemary Deem, Professor of Education, University of Bristol This book examines the proposition that parental education is a key factor contributing to the access and success of students, but that insufficient attention is paid to this by researchers, national systems and institutional interventions. Analysis of research findings from ten countries, plus a UK wide study, indicates that parental education is more important in determining access to higher education than parental employment or financial status. The book provides a clear conceptualisation of first generation entry, exploring its complex interrelationship with social class. Furthermore, it demonstrates that when first generation entry is used as a lens, it disrupts the taken for granted assumptions regarding widening participation and helps produce much more effective approaches to targeting access and supporting student success. First Generation Entry into Higher Education provides a unique and insightful examination of how first generation entrants are supported or otherwise by different national approaches and institutional responses. The book is essential reading for all with an interest in widening participation in higher education.

Book Synopsis Change Management in TVET Colleges by : Andre Kraak
Download or read book Change Management in TVET Colleges written by Andre Kraak and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college environment is marked by increasingly stark juxtapositions between what needs to be achieved in the post-school education sector and the increasing difficulty of current conditions. The triple challenge of poverty, inequality and unemployment weighs heavily on the social, political and economic fabric of the country and expectations are high that the TVET colleges can make a pivotal contribution to counter these challenges. Despite laudable increases in TVET enrolment, the education system needs to work harder to accommodate the weight of demand for post school further education and training (FET) band qualifications from young people not in education, employment or training. At the same time, it is vital to secure adequate quality in TVET programmes which depend so much on the competence and commitment of college lecturers.
