Book excerpt: A rotary wet high intensity magnetic separator with the compartmented carousel revolving in the horizontal plane on a vertical axis. The matrix in the carousel compartments being granular magnetic material such as iron balls. Each compartment has one or more apertures in the outer side wall near the perforated compartment bottom. The carousel rotates with the compartments passing through one or more magnetic fields generated by electromagnets. The slurry carrying the magnetic particles that it is desired to remove is fed through the matrix in the compartments whilst they are in the magnetic field. The magnetic particles are held by the matrix until that portion of the carousel moves out of the field and they are then washed out of the compartment. The ball matrix soon becomes clogged with wood, chips, fibres and other detritus. A flexible belt closing the side wall apertures retains the granular matrix in the compartments until the belt is diverted away from the carousel, around a series of rollers and then returns to the carousel. During the period when the apertures are not closed by the belt a portion of the granular matrix flows from each compartment and is removed by a conveyor for cleaning and then returned to refill the matrix compartment. The essence of the patent is the mechanical device to remove, with each revolution of the carousel, portion of the ball matrix, clean that portion and return it to the carousel.
