Book excerpt: This report on joint sealant materials for concrete pavement repairs is based on conversations with specialists from several states, the Federal Highway Administration, the Portland Cement Association, and the American Concrete Pavement Association, and on a review of the literature. It lightly covers material properties, costs, and the experience with silicones on I-81 over the past few years. Appendix A is a copy of the AASHTO-AGR-ARTBA "Joint and Crack Resealing," Chapter 3, "Guide Procedures for Concrete Pavement 4R Operations," which provides an overview of the resealing of joints and cracks in existing portland cement concrete pavements. Appendix B is a copy of the Georgia Department of Transportation's most recent specifications dealing with silicone joint sealants, which are frequently cited as a model for this material.

Download or read book Sealers for Joints and Cracks in Concrete Pavements written by National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper 1: The performance of sealing materials for sawed joints is being studied by a laboratory test in which the joints are opened and closed at speeds of the order of 1/32 inch per hour. The sealers are applied to sawed joints which are initially 1/8 or 3/16 inch wide and which are usually opened an additional 1/8 inch at 0 F during the tests. Paper 2: 16 laboratories were asked to participate in the evaluation of bond-ductility, flow, and penetration tests for joint sealing compounds. three hot-poured type rubber -asphalt sealants were used in this testing program. the material samples, together with special mortar test blocks for the bond-ductility test, were sent to all participants from one centralized source, the federal specification SS-R-406C procedure was used, emphasizing certain details in order to have the test better controlled.

Improved Materials and Processes for Sealing and Resealing Joints in Portland Cement Concrete Pavements: Laboratory Study written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A joint effort research program between Crafco Incorporated and the US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station was conducted under the auspices of the FY 89 Construction Productivity Advancement Research Program. The purpose was to develop improved materials and processes for sealing and resealing joints in portland cement concrete pavements. The program's objectives were to (a) develop specification limits for a hot-applied, jet-fuel-resistant (JFR) sealant with improved characteristics as compared to current Federal Specification (FS) SS-S1614A requirements, (b) develop specification limits for a hot-applied, non- jet-fuel-resistant (non-JFR) sealant with improved low temperature performance characteristics as compared to current FS SS-S-1401C requirements, (c) develop specification limits for a primer system that will minimize bubbling tendencies associated with hot-applied sealants and improve adhesion to portland cement concrete, and (d) develop field data to determine performance characteristics of flush fill sealant application geometry versus 1/8 to 1/4 in. recess application techniques. Federal specification SS-S-1401, Jet-fuel-resistant sealants, Federal specification SS-S-1614, Non-jet-fuel-resistant sealants. Hot-applied joint sealants.

Lynch and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the field evaluation phase of the joint effort research program conducted by Crafco, Incorporated, and the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. The project was funded under the auspices of the FY 89 Construction Productivity Advancement Research (CPAR) Program. The objectives of the research effort were to (a) develop specification limits for a hot-applied, jet-fuel-resistant (JFR) sealant with improved performance characteristics as compared to current Federal Specification (FS) SS-S-1614A type materials, (b) develop specification limits for a hot-applied, non-jet- fuel-resistant (non-JFR) sealant with improved low temperature performance characteristics as compared to current FS SS-S-1401C type materials, (c) develop specification limits for a primer system that will minimize the bubbling tendencies associated with hot-applied sealants and improve adhesion characteristics to portland cement concrete (PCC), and (d) develop field data to determine performance characteristics of flush fill sealant application geometry versus 1/8 to 1/4 in. recess application techniques. The objectives were expanded to include field comparisons of the laboratory developed JFR and non- JFR sealants versus commercially available sealant materials and to verify that the developed primer system minimized bubbling tendencies of hot-applied sealants. Asphalt-based sealants, Field-molded sealants, Cold-applied sealants, Hot-applied sealants, Coal tar-based sealants, Jet-fuel-resistant sealants, Silicone-based sealants, Non-jet-fuel-resistant sealants, Two-component sealants, Polysulfide-based sealants.
Book Synopsis Evaluation of Joint Sealants of Concrete Pavements by : Ashok H. Gurjar
Download or read book Evaluation of Joint Sealants of Concrete Pavements written by Ashok H. Gurjar and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project 0-187 task 15 continued investigative efforts of project 1371. The project completed laboratory tests including relaxation tests, bond-strength tests, and fatigue tests for various sealant materials, and also established a field test site of a variety of joint sealants to monitor performance. The researchers constructed a material behavior model based on finite-deformation viscoelasticity as a function of temperature, deformation, and age effects. They studied the correlation between natural and artificial weathering and proposed a sealant performance model. Based on this model, this report provides a procedure for estimation of the service life of a sealant in concrete pavement joints. This report also proposes a specification and a test protocol for joint sealant materials, which incorporate performance prediction procedure.
Book Synopsis Transverse Joint Sealing with Improved Sealants by : Gary Harris
Download or read book Transverse Joint Sealing with Improved Sealants written by Gary Harris and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern about premature joint sealant failures occurring in portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements gave impetus to initiating this research project. Eight sealants, including three silicone sealants, were evaluated and tested in the lab as well as incorporated in approximately 700 joints in the field and evaluated over a six-year period. The preliminary data show that among the silicone sealants, Dow Corning 888 rated the highest. However, this was rated third overall behind the W.R. Meadows cold-applied Sof Seal and Crafco #231 hot pour sealants. The W.R. Meadows and Crafco sealants cost approximately 30% and 50% less to furnish and place than the Dow Corning product. All joint sealants will continue to be evaluated.
Book Synopsis Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Joint Sealant Practices and Performance by :
Download or read book Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Joint Sealant Practices and Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement joint sealing material technology has evolved in recent decades, and the effect of current joint sealant practice has not been well documented. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a standardized approach to joint sealant evaluation as well as to investigate the practice of joint sealant in PCC pavement design. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Synthesis 568: Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Joint Sealant Practices and Performance compiles and documents information regarding the current state of practice of joint sealing PCC by state departments of transportation.
