Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the possible improvement of forage production for livestock in areas with limited irrigation water and, sometimes, land. It is written in two parts; the first provides some basic elements of forest yield formation; the second gives details of five crops plus pastures selected because of their wide distribution or recommendations for use. The book mainly deals with crop agronomy, such as soil management, crop selection, input scheduling, and forage quality; as well as examining the physical processes, such as climate factors, crop-water functions, low water quality, and irrigation methods.Serving as a useful reference book, this volume will be of great value to research workers, farmers, teachers, extension and advisory agents and senior students of agriculture and animal science.

Book excerpt: Forages: The Science of Grassland Agriculture, 7th Edition, Volume II will extensively evaluate the current knowledge and information on forage agriculture. Chapters written by leading researchers and authorities in grassland agriculture are aggregated under section themes, each one representing a major topic within grassland science and agriculture. This 7th edition will include two new additional chapters covering all aspects of forage physiology in three separate chapters, instead of one in previous editions. Chapters will be updated throughout to include new information that has developed since the last edition. This new edition of the classic reference serves as a comprehensive supplement to An Introduction to Grassland Agriculture, Volume I.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management to Increase Forage Production in the West Hay is the key to improved management of grazed forage crops on many farms and ranches in the West. Alfalfa provides 65 percent of the hay harvested, Studies show that at least 10 per cent of the cr0p is lost by improper handling during curing, storing, and feeding and that much Of this loss could be avoided. Research results Show that material increases in yield per acre can be obtained by growing adapted varie ties, applying P205, and using irrigation water correctly. Grass-alfalfa mixtures containing 30 to 35 percent of tame grass by weight have been shown to yield as much and have the same feeding value as alfalfa. In addition, mixtures prevent invasion Of weeds and have a greater beneficial effect in soil and water conservation. The yield of hay from many Of the 2, 619, 000 acres of native meadows can be increased by the use of N and P205 and, if irrigated, by applying water properly. The quality of this hay can be improved further by making an earlier first and then a second cutting. A little m'ore than 561 million acres of land are grazed by livestock. Yield of much of the 9, 426, 000 acres of tame pasture on cropland could be doubled, and the rangelands of the West have a forage potential that could provide for an esti mated 5 million additional animal units. In both cases management is the key to greater per-acre production. Management of the grass crop by improved grazing methods, the use of fertilizers where applicable, and proper application of water on irrigated land are the principal means for increasing yield. Whether it be irrigated or dry land pasture or range, fundamental knowledge of the physiology Of each species and Of the ecology of the plant community is essential, both to the investigator and to the land Operator. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salinity becomes a problem in Semiarid and arid and arid regions of the world, posing major challange to provide food for the rapidly increasing population. Inappropriate agricultural practies have resulted in increasing saline waters and saline lands, which are worthless for conventional agriculture. Excess salts accumulate in the root zone, prevents water absorption from surrounding soil and lowering the amount of water available to the plant. The most likely effect of salinity on plants is stunted growth, and physical damage or mortality may be caused at higher salt concentration. Researches conducted in last few decades reveal hundreds of salt tolerant plants in the world most of which could be utilized as cash crops using novel ideas and technologies. However, there is still a need to develop technology of saline agriculture suited to the different ecosystems of the world and major efforts are required to domesticate them using modern technology. This publication, through its 27 chapters exposes the difficulty of squeezing agricultural output, faced by mostly dry and saline parts of the world due to scarcity of clean water and fertile land for crop production. The volume also provides a facinating view on the safeguards and remedies to overcome this problem by means of modern techniques and natural resistant phenomenon of the flora in itself. The volume is chiefly based on the discussions and presentation during the International workshop on Crop and Forage Production using Saline Waters in Dry Areas held in Birjand, Iran during 7-10 May, 2006. The information presented herein would hopefully serve as a valuable reference material for the professionals and those who are actively involved in agriculture, research and management of crop production in dry and saline areas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new 2-volume set discusses the importance of fodder production of the minor fodder crops for animals. The volumes focuses on fodder production for forage crops, cover 17 major forage crops and 25 minor forage crops. The volumes discuss crop production methodology and agronomic management in a systemic way, providing an abundance of information on each type of forage crop discussed, including preferred soil type, land capability, cropping patterns, climate, and socioeconomic conditions. They also address pests of the various forage crops, disease management, agroforestry in fodder and forage crops, preservation of forage crops, and forage production and climate change. Forage crops are very essential for quality milk and meat production. Farm animals are normally fed fodder available from cultivated areas, supplemented by a small extent with harvested grasses and top feeds. The three major sources of fodder are crop residues, cultivated fodder, and fodder from trees, pastures, and grazing lands. The patterns and types of fodder crops vary by geographical location.
