Book excerpt: This book is about general infrared (IR) engineering, technology, practices, and principles as they apply to modem imaging systems. An alternative title to this book with appeal to managers and marketing personnel might be "Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Infrared Sensors, but Couldn't Get Answers on from Engineers." This book is not meant to be a comprehensive compendium of IR (like the Infrared and Electro Optical Systems Handbook). Rather, it is intend ed to complement such texts by providing up to date information and pragmatic knowledge that is difficult to locate outside of periodicals. The information contained in this book is critical in the day-to-day life of en gineering practitioners, proposal writers, and those on the periphery of an IR pro gram. It serves as a guide for engineers wishing to "catch up," engineers new to the field, managers, students, administrators, and technicians. It is also useful for seasoned IR engineers who want to review recent technological developments.

Book excerpt: The world is being transformed physically and politically. Technology is the handmaiden of much of this change. But since the current sweep of global change is transforming the face of warfare, Special Operations Forces (SOF) must adapt to these circumstances. Fortunately, adaptation is in the SOF DNA. This book examines the changes affecting SOF and offers possible solutions to the complexities that are challenging many long-held assumptions. The chapters explore what has changed, what stays the same, and what it all means for U.S. SOF. The authors are a mix of leading experts in technology, business, policy, intelligence, and geopolitics, partnered with experienced special operators who either cowrote the chapters or reviewed them to ensure accuracy and relevance for SOF. Our goal is to provide insights into the changes around us and generate ideas about how SOF can adapt and succeed in the emerging operational environment.

Book excerpt: Engineering the physical, chemical, and energy properties of lignocellulosic biomass is important to produce high-quality consistent feedstocks with reduced variability for biofuels production. The emphasis of this book will be the beneficial impacts that mechanical, chemical, and thermal preprocessing methods can have on lignocellulosic biomass quality attributes or specifications for solid and liquid biofuels and biopower production technologies. "Preprocessing" refers to treatments that can occur at a distance from conversion and result in an intermediate with added value, with improved conversion performance and efficiency. This book explores the effects of mechanical, chemical, and thermal preprocessing methods on lignocellulosic biomass physical properties and chemical composition and their suitability for biofuels production. For example, biomass mechanical preprocessing methods like size reduction (which impacts the particle size and distribution) and densification (density and size and shape) are important for feedstocks to meet the quality requirements for both biochemical and thermochemical conversion methods like enzymatic conversion, gasification, and pyrolysis process. Thermal preprocessing methods like drying, deep drying, torrefaction, steam explosion, hydrothermal carbonization, and hydrothermal liquefaction effect feedstock's proximate, ultimate and energy property, making biomass suitable for both solid and liquid fuel production. Chemical preprocessing which includes washing, leaching, acid, alkali, and ammonia fiber explosion that can enable biochemical composition, such as modification of lignin and hemicellulose, and impacts the enzymatic conversion application for liquid fuels production. This book also explores the integration of these preprocessing technologies to achieve desired lignocellulosic biomass quality attributes for biofuels production.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vital electronics industry can boost a country's economic growth, provide jobs for skilled workers, and speed development in other sectors. This report shows how to build a modern and competitive electronics industry. It gives step-by-step advice on the market conditions, enterprise strategies, and government policies that can create a successful electronics sector. The editors suggest guidelines to help countries identify competitive segments of industry. They explain why prospects lie in products for industry, computers, and telecommunications. Their advice points out which products countries should focus on initially. It recommends ways to expand, once basic production and skills are established. The role government must play in developing the physical infrastructure and a skilled work force is examined and major trends in the global electronics industry are reviewed in detail. The collection focuses on semiconductors, computers, consumer electronics, and telecommunications. It examines how electronics developed in advanced industrial economies while electronics industries in selected developing economies and newly industrialized economies are also evaluated. The report explores the roles played by foreign investment and technological development. It describes key government interventions that prepared private enterprises--and labor markets--for market competition. The book points out government interventions and industry practices that hampered efficiency and growth and gives practical advice on improving public policies and boosting industry performance.
