Book excerpt: THERE is a character in current drama who devoted his whole life to the writing of a book. He called it a "pamphlet," because he had intended it to be a pamphlet when he started on his task, but in its completed state the work filled three mighty folio volumes. Although the present volume has not attained such gargantuan proportions, it is considerably longer than I had thought to make it. It is not put forward as an exhaustive or profound study of Spain and the Spaniards, but as a simple record of impressions of people I have met and places I have visited during a series of many journeyings in different parts of that greatly interesting and much misunderstood country. These impressions were meant, in the beginning, to form a small collection of sketches and appreciations; and, although the number has increased beyond the limits of my original intentions, the design and scope of the book have not been revised or amplified. The result of this desultory system of working is a string of disconnected chapters-the first fruits of fugitive note-book jottings collected over a period of several years-rather than a concentrated and comprehensive survey of the subject as a whole.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth About Spain MY interest in Spain and her affairs began years ago, when roving fancy led me to take a long holiday, and circumstances shortly afterwards brought me into close friendship with an eminent Spanish scholar, who has been the judicious and disinterested guide of my studies. It was not long before I was drawn into a serious examination of Iberia's political and social problems, and contact with reformers and publicists of various schools of thought, added to exceptional opportunities for acquainting myself with the periodical literature of the country, only served to confirm my early impressions. I am convinced that it is only by a succession of visits at intervals that an unfamiliar country, of such marked and strong character as Spain possesses, can be comprehended; it is necessary to meditate over one's impressions at leisure, to start afresh, again and again, with some old prejudice re moved, and a clearer vision of the essential facts; during a single visit, however lengthy, this is difficult to effect. They have dealt with their subject from the point of view of the artist or the his torian, the archaeologist, the politician, or the mere sight-seer. The student of architecture, or the travel er, desiring a more intimate or serious knowledge of the great cathedrals, has had nothing to consult since Street published his remarkable book some forty years ago. There have been artistic impressions, as well as guide-book recitations, by the score. Some have been excellent, though few have surpassed the older ones of Dumas, pere, and Gautier, or Baedeker's later guide-book. A year ago appeared the second and last volume of Sefior Lamperez y Romea's His toria de la Arquitectura Cristiana Espanola en la Edad Media, a work so comprehensive and scholarly that it practically stands alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Spain in 1856 and 1857 The only apology which the author can seriously make for adding one to the multitude of slight books on Spain is, that, having some practice in this kind of writing, and habits of labour to which the exercise was congenial, he has been able, in the daily course of travelling, to fix while they were recent, and to throw promptly into narrative and description, the impressions made upon his mind by new scenes and new manners, in a land teeming with beauty and still rich in originality: the images have been given before they were obscured by time, or confused with ideas subse quently acquired: and if this has been done with apparent truth and with some freshness of effect, the work may have a feature which will entitle it to be looked at among the crowd. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain in Profile: A Summer Among the Olives and Aloes There is a class of readers whom the unscien tific traveler would gladly reach and interest, the light Skimmers of summer books between whom and distant countries lie, - not one, but many seas, and whose only hope, in all probabil ity, of seeing them is through the more favored eyes of others. For these - not for those who have personally 'undertaken the adventure of Spain this volume is specially written, a se ries of profiles projected more or less vaguely by a Spanish sun. The author feels his errors of omission and of commission quite as keenly as the most hostile critic could desire, and would hesitate to publish his sketches at all for more they do not profess to be - if. The general im pression pervading them were unfavorable to the Spaniards. Much has doubtless been over looked, much inadequately seen but the book is in no sense a guide-book, and wherever it hasbeen possible, details such as are found in guide books are left to those compilations. The reali ties of landscape, the mode of life and Of travel, the aspect of the old Spanish cities, the habits of the people, the vicissitudes of a summer journey set down just as they appeared, form the staple of these pages. Personal impressions may, per adventure, have a sort of value 5 and if this slight record, which pretends to nothing beyond being a faithful transcription of personal impressions, should awaken the interest of a single reader and persuade him to study a most interesting country for himself, its aim will be more than accom plished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Spain Few travellers have leisure enough to traverse the Wide realm of tawny Spain in its every part. Those who must confine their attention to a single province naturally select Andalusia, Where all the Northerner's preconceptions of the South find realization. The wild scenery of Southern Spain, the gay open - air life of the people, the monuments attesting the splendour of the extinct civilization of the Moor, the spell of romance which still holds its cities, makes this land one of the most interesting and fascinating in Europe to the artist, the archaeologist, and the dreamer. The present volume, mainly the embodiment of personal impressions and observations, is intended partly to supply the place of a guide-book to this part of the Peninsula, and with that object I have brought together as much of history, art, and topography as the traveller is likely to assimilate. Into the descriptive matter I have introduced a little gossip, which will, I hope, be not found altogether irrelevant, and may serve to beguile the tedium of a bare recital of facts. What befell me on this vacation jaunt is no story of harrowing adventure, nor yet a record of the acquisition of new facts. But as I covered a thousand miles of the Iberian peninsula on foot, twice that distance by third-class rail, and am given to mingling with the masses, it may be that there have filtered into the following pages some facts and impressions that will be new to the reader. Yet it is less to record these that I have written, than to answer a question that has often been put to me since my return How can a man make such a journey on $172? Author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of the Dons IN writing the land OF the dons my aim has been to produce an intimate and trustworthy account of Spain and the Spaniards. I do not aspire to compete with the printed impressions of British or American tourists who pay a flying visit to a Spanish city or two, and scurry home ward reeking with inspiration. These are the most prolific and perceptive of authors; and doubtless many of them would volunteer to turn out in a fortnight what has occupied my close attention for a number of years. Of the Spanish words or phrases which figure in the text, many are explained, or explain them selves, upon the spot. A small glossary just before the index deals adequately, I think, with the remainder. Various of the illustrations are from my own negatives. Where this is not so the name of the photographer is always stated; and it should be understood that my thanks are due for courteous permission to reproduce.
