Book excerpt: A message of hope and total healing from the daughter of one of the country's most dynamic and popular pastors The quickest way through a challenge is to hand it over to the One who calms the seas simply by saying, "Be still." If God can do that, He can certainly handle anything you are currently facing. Tish Hagee Tucker, daughter of Pastor John Hagee, is living proof of that. In Master of the Impossible she tells her story of being healed from cancer as an example of what God can do. This inspirational message of hope will appeal both to her father's audience and to anyone who is struggling right now. Sometimes in our lives we face extreme obstacles and feel as if we have nowhere to turn. All our own resources are tapped out. But God has promised in His Word that He will make a way where there seems to be no way. He is the Master of the Impossible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a culture increasingly secular in its pursuits and indifferent to the voice of the church, how may we ignite the fire for ministry that will bring the gospel to the world? How can weary pastors be sustained amidst a climate of doubt and resistance? For more than half a century, three remarkable brothers have offered a vision that has inspired thousands in churches and seminaries. Today, their message remains fresh and relevant as we enter a new millennium. And for one reason: The Brothers Torrance share a passion for Christ--the Christ of the Scriptures, the Christ of the historic Nicene faith. These essays distill the essence of their thought, and shine with the clarity of their shared vision. A Passion for Christ is a light of encouragement for ministers and lay people elsewhere.

Book excerpt: This is the incredible story of a man of God whose life touched many and whose death inspired even more. Jamie James adored her husband, Shibu Mathai, and so did everyone else who met him. He was a true believer, following the Lord's will without hesitation in every area of his life. Never one to get mad or upset, he was always making people laugh with his jokes and pranks. The messages he shared about the Word of God inspired all who listened. He was the perfect husband, always placing Jamie's needs above his own, just as he did for everyone he encountered. His joy was to serve. On August 13, 2005, he served by saving three children from drowning—but then his own life was taken. His death rocked Jamie's world. How could a man so young and with so much passion for the Lord's work be taken away so soon in life? What about their dreams of taking the gospel into the world and ministering to the poor and lost? What about their future together? What about the one billion souls Shibu wanted to claim for the Lord? Why would God allow such a thing to happen? Through the eyes of Jamie and others who knew Shibu, readers will witness how a life and death can bring together a community and strengthen the faith of many. Discover Impossible Faith.

Book excerpt: Dr. Richard Carrier is an expert in the history of the ancient world and a critic of Christian attempts to distort history in defense of their faith. Not the Impossible Faith is a tour de force in that genre, dissecting and refuting the oft-repeated claim that Christianity could not have succeeded in the ancient world unless it was true. Though framed as a detailed rebuttal to Christian apologist J.P. Holding (author of The Impossible Faith), Carrier takes a general approach that educates the reader on the history and sociology of the ancient world, answering many questions like: How did Christians approach evidence? Was there a widespread prejudice against the testimony of women? Was resurrection such a radical idea? Who would worship a crucified criminal? And much more. Written with occasional humor and an easy style, and thoroughly referenced, with many entertaining "gotcha!" moments, Not the Impossible Faith is a must-read for anyone interested in the origins of Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving sound historical research with rich ethnographic insight, An Impossible Inheritance tells the story of the emergence, disavowal, and afterlife of a distinctive project in transcultural psychiatry initiated at the Fann Psychiatric Clinic in Dakar, Senegal during the 1960s and 1970s. Today’s clinic remains haunted by its past and Katie Kilroy-Marac brilliantly examines the complex forms of memory work undertaken by its affiliates over a sixty year period. Through stories such as that of the the ghost said to roam the clinic’s halls, the mysterious death of a young doctor sometimes attributed to witchcraft, and the spirit possession ceremonies that may have taken place in Fann’s courtyard, Kilroy-Marac argues that memory work is always an act of the imagination and a moral practice with unexpected temporal, affective, and political dimensions. By exploring how accounts about the Fann Psychiatric Clinic and its past speak to larger narratives of postcolonial and neoliberal transformation, An Impossible Inheritance examines the complex relationship between memory, history, and power within the institution and beyond.

Book excerpt: A proposal that extends the enactive approach developed in cognitive science and philosophy of mind to issues in affective science. In The Feeling Body, Giovanna Colombetti takes ideas from the enactive approach developed over the last twenty years in cognitive science and philosophy of mind and applies them for the first time to affective science—the study of emotions, moods, and feelings. She argues that enactivism entails a view of cognition as not just embodied but also intrinsically affective, and she elaborates on the implications of this claim for the study of emotion in psychology and neuroscience. In the course of her discussion, Colombetti focuses on long-debated issues in affective science, including the notion of basic emotions, the nature of appraisal and its relationship to bodily arousal, the place of bodily feelings in emotion experience, the neurophysiological study of emotion experience, and the bodily nature of our encounters with others. Drawing on enactivist tools such as dynamical systems theory, the notion of the lived body, neurophenomenology, and phenomenological accounts of empathy, Colombetti advances a novel approach to these traditional issues that does justice to their complexity. Doing so, she also expands the enactive approach into a further domain of inquiry, one that has more generally been neglected by the embodied-embedded approach in the philosophy of cognitive science.

Book excerpt: The great American Westerns can be profoundly meaningful when read metaphorically. More than mere shoot 'em up entertainment, they are an essential part of a vibrant, evolving national mythology. Like other versions of the archetypal Hero's Journey, these films are filled with insights about life, love, nature, society, ethics, beauty and what it means to be human, and are key to understanding American culture. Part film guide, part historical survey, this book explores the mythic and artistic elements in 52 great Westerns--some orthodox, some subversive--from the genre's first half-century. Each film is given detailed critical analysis, from the earliest silent movies to Golden Age classics like Red River (1948), High Noon (1952) and Shane (1953).
