The difficulty in achieving predictive simulations is perhaps best illustrated by the wide range of approaches that have been developed and are still being used by the turbulence modeling community. In this book the authors describe one of these approaches, Implicit Large Eddy Simulation (ILES). ILES is a relatively new approach that combines generality and computational efficiency with documented success in many areas of complex fluid flow. This book synthesizes the theoretical basis of the ILES methodology and reviews its accomplishments. ILES pioneers and lead researchers combine here their experience to present a comprehensive description of the methodology. This book should be of fundamental interest to graduate students, basic research scientists, as well as professionals involved in the design and analysis of complex turbulent flows.

Shock-induced turbulent mixing is of particular importance for many astrophysical phenomena, inertial confinement fusion, and mixing in supersonic combustion. These disciplines are particularly reliant on numerical simulation, as the extreme nature of the flow in question makes gathering accurate experimental data difficult or impossible. A detailed quantitative study of homogeneous decaying turbulence demonstrates that existing state of the art methods represent the growth of turbulent structures and the decay of turbulent kinetic energy to a reasonable degree of accuracy. However, a key observation is that the numerical methods are too dissipative at high wavenumbers (short wavelengths relative to the grid spacing). A theoretical analysis of the dissipation of kinetic energy in low Mach number flows shows that the leading order dissipation rate for Godunov-type schemes is proportional to the speed of sound and the velocity jump across the cell interface squared. This shows that the dissipation of Godunov-type schemes becomes large for low Mach flow features, hence impeding the development of fluid instabilities, and causing overly dissipative turbulent kinetic energy spectra. It is shown that this leading order term can be removed by locally modifying the reconstruction of the velocity components. As the modification is local, it allows the accurate simulation of mixed compressible/incompressible flows without changing the formulation of the governing equations. In principle, the modification is applicable to any finite volume compressible method which includes a reconstruction stage. Extensive numerical tests show great improvements in performance at low Mach compared to the standard scheme, significantly improving turbulent kinetic energy spectra, and giving the correct Mach squared scaling of pressure and density variations.

Book excerpt: Computational resources have developed to the level that, for the first time, it is becoming possible to apply large-eddy simulation (LES) to turbulent flow problems of realistic complexity. Many examples can be found in technology and in a variety of natural flows. This puts issues related to assessing, assuring, and predicting the quality of LES into the spotlight. Several LES studies have been published in the past, demonstrating a high level of accuracy with which turbulent flow predictions can be attained, without having to resort to the excessive requirements on computational resources imposed by direct numerical simulations. However, the setup and use of turbulent flow simulations requires a profound knowledge of fluid mechanics, numerical techniques, and the application under consideration. The susceptibility of large-eddy simulations to errors in modelling, in numerics, and in the treatment of boundary conditions, can be quite large due to nonlinear accumulation of different contributions over time, leading to an intricate and unpredictable situation. A full understanding of the interacting error dynamics in large-eddy simulations is still lacking. To ensure the reliability of large-eddy simulations for a wide range of industrial users, the development of clear standards for the evaluation, prediction, and control of simulation errors in LES is summoned. The workshop on Quality and Reliability of Large-Eddy Simulations, held October 22-24, 2007 in Leuven, Belgium (QLES2007), provided one of the first platforms specifically addressing these aspects of LES.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers the proceedings of the 11th workshop on Direct and Large Eddy Simulation (DLES), which was held in Pisa, Italy in May 2017. The event focused on modern techniques for simulating turbulent flows based on the partial or full resolution of the instantaneous turbulent flow structures, as Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS), Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) or hybrid models based on a combination of LES and RANS approaches. In light of the growing capacities of modern computers, these approaches have been gaining more and more interest over the years and will undoubtedly be developed and applied further. The workshop offered a unique opportunity to establish a state-of-the-art of DNS, LES and related techniques for the computation and modeling of turbulent and transitional flows and to discuss about recent advances and applications. This volume contains most of the contributed papers, which were submitted and further reviewed for publication. They cover advances in computational techniques, SGS modeling, boundary conditions, post-processing and data analysis, and applications in several fields, namely multiphase and reactive flows, convection and heat transfer, compressible flows, aerodynamics of airfoils and wings, bluff-body and separated flows, internal flows and wall turbulence and other complex flows.

This requires a numerical method that is accurate and able to handle complex geometries. High-order finite-difference schemes are structured, making mesh generation a time consuming process. High-order finite-volume schemes require large complicated stencils, making them unsuitable for massively parallel simulations. We propose the high-order unstructured correction procedure via reconstruction scheme (CPR) for the simulation of turbulent flows. It has a compact stencil extending to only one neighbouring element, unlike high-order finite-volume schemes. It has a nodal differential form and is quadrature free, unlike other high-order discontinuous schemes. We investigate its application to large eddy simulation (LES), which has greater fidelity than Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes models at a fraction of the cost of direct numerical simulation. We propose an implicit LES (ILES) approach, using numerical dissipation to dissipate energy from the smallest resolved scales. We investigate the use of the CPR scheme for ILES of turbulent decaying flows. Primarily the Taylor-Green vortex and Comte-Bellot and Corrsin test cases. We then consider turbulent wall bounded flows including turbulent channel flow and turbulent flow over an SD7003 airfoil. Results show that the CPR scheme can be used for ILES without an explicit subgrid-scale model. We find that the higher-order schemes are more accurate than lower-order schemes on a per degree of freedom basis. We find high-order schemes require an increased amount of memory for fully implicit time-stepping. We propose an adaptive implicit-explicit (IMEX) method to reduce total memory consumption. This allows us to solve a fraction of the domain implicitly, where it is required for the sake of stability. Results show that the proposed scheme is stable and maintains the formal order of accuracy of the spatial discretization. Simulations of unsteady and turbulent flows show that this approach can be used for ILES. The proposed scheme provides two orders of magnitude reduction in simulation time for turbulent flow over a circular cylinder, while consuming only a fraction of the memory required for a fully implicit scheme." --

Book excerpt: High-order Flux Reconstruction (FR) schemes can simulate unsteady turbulent flows using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) in the vicinity of complex geometries. The application of FR schemes can be limited by non-linear instabilities, related to oscillatory behaviour of the element-wise numerical solution, causing nonphysical solutions. In this study, filtering is studied for hexagonal element types and solution polynomial of degrees 3, 4, and 5 at different Mach numbers ranging from 0.1 to 0.5. A new exponential filtering function is applied globally to all elements and artificially damps high-frequency oscillations to improve numerical stability. Numerous numerical tests have been performed to investigate different parameters in the exponential filtering function. The optimum set of these parameters is obtained such that the highest solution polynomial modes are damped while the lower ones remain untouched to preserve accuracy. The solution polynomial is filtered after each time step; however, the filtering operator is defined, through the concept of characteristic time, to be independent of the time-step size. The exponential filter has been implemented and rigorously studied to evaluate its accuracy. To verify the order of accuracy, advection of an isentropic vortex has been analyzed. To study accuracy for LES, the Taylor-Green vortex test case is studied as a free turbulent flow. Finally, a previously unstable wall-bounded turbulent channel flow test case along with a NACA0020 airfoil at high angle of attack are considered to study the effects of the proposed filtering on stability and accuracy of practical applications.
