Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documenting the devastating effects of global warming and climate change, Warm Waters is a multi-year photographic documentary across the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, from Northern Alaska to the remote outposts of New Zealand. The journey started in 2013 in Papua New Guinea, where photographer Vlad Sokhin documented illegal logging and deforestation. In 2014, Sokhin covered the rise of sea levels, coastal erosion and the effects of El Niño in Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, Nauru, the Marshall Islands and Niue. In 2015, 2016 and 2018, he extensively covered the aftermath of tropical cyclones across Pacific island nations and delved deeper into documenting struggles of the affected communities, their resilience and adaptation to the realities of global warming. In 2019, he documented severe drought in Timor-Leste, caused by the weather anomalies. Warm Waters also looks at other environmental issues our planet is facing, such as climate migrants and their resettlement, permafrost melting, coral bleaching, and the need for renewable energy. The book shows the evidence of fight, adaptation, and hope of remote island and coastal communities. It takes you right into the lives of Inupiat and Yupik people in Alaska, and to the towns and villages that are being destroyed by the sea and coastal erosion on the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula. You will see how scientists work in the field, studying the effects of climate change, and how the people, affected by extreme weather conditions, are trying to survive and rebuild their lives after catastrophic events have ruined their land and homes. Warm Waters not only shows tragedy however; it shows the beauty of our planet, communities living in harmony with nature, and people that are tirelessly working to protect their fragile shores from the biggest environmental threat ever they have ever faced.

Book excerpt: "This is review paper focuses on climate change and its impact on sea level rise in the countries of low lying areas (Bangladesh) and islands (Tonga). The study makes an attempt to highlight the causes and impacts of sea level rise. The review shows that there is an increase in the seal level rise (0.2 m) in the coastline of Bangladesh that is adversely affecting nearby biodiversity spots. As a noticeable result, one of the most fragile ecosystems Sundarban mangrove is facing the threat of rising sea levels. The renowned, native plant Sundari is on the verge of extinction. Similarly, the study found numerous instances related to sea level rise in the island country of Tonga."--Page [1]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattered like dots rising from the deep across vast expanses of the world’s tropical and subtropical oceans, atolls with their turquoise lagoons and reefs teeming with colorful marine life have captured the public imagination. They have also been the homeland of millions of people for millennia as various groups of migrants spread across the far reaches if the Pacific, Indian and Western Atlantic regions. Developed from recently available satellite data, A Global Atlas of Atolls presents high-quality details of 476 atolls across the globe, characterizing aspects of the atoll rim, the lagoon, and their coral reef communities in unprecedented detail. In synthesizing and enhancing understanding of these unique seascapes, this volume provides a distinct compendium of descriptions and images, as well as documentation of the environmental conditions of winds, waves, and tides and a summary of the background literature for each atoll area. There is no comparable work. After an introduction that includes a glossary of terms, each atoll is documented in the form of an atlas written for scientists, but accessible to any diver or reader interested in these spectacular reef-island habitats. This book also describes some current challenges and perspectives on their future. It will be useful as a reference work for marine scientists, while providing a minimum of technical jargon for those who are not scientists, but who enjoy reading about exotic places with unusual attributes.

Book excerpt: The modern understanding of climate extremes in the vast Pacific Ocean has been hampered by an incomplete picture of the incidence of such extremes in the past. For the first time in this book is given a largely complete account of extreme events – tropical cyclones (hurricanes) and droughts – culled from a myriad of sources, ranging from whalers’ logs to missionary diaries, as far back in time as written records extend. This book is an essential reference for anyone interested in the nature and recurrence times of climate extremes in the Pacific Ocean. It also provides fascinating insights into the historical impacts of extreme events on often highly vulnerable island populations and livelihoods and, in doing so, underscores their continuing vulnerability as they confront 21st-century climate change.
