Book excerpt: The Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) Initiative, funded by the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice, is an ambitious federal effort to improve the health and well-being of children and adolescents. The Initiative focuses on integrated prevention and treatment programs, strategies, and services designed to reduce violence and substance use among children, promote mental health, and enhance school safety. The SS/HS Initiative has awarded competitive grants to between 20 and 54 sites each year beginning in 1999. The Research Triangle Institute (RTI) is using two approaches to evaluate this Initiative: conducting a comprehensive cross-site evaluation and supporting consortia of local evaluators who conduct independent evaluations. The goal of these complementary evaluation strategies is to assess the effectiveness of collaborative community efforts to promote safe schools and facilitate healthy child and adolescent development. This brief report describes these strategies and lists the reports resulting from the evaluations.

Book excerpt: This workbook presents a seven-step planning process for safe and effective schools. Though specifically directed to schools in California, most of the components of the plan will pertain to schools everywhere. The workbook contains requirements of the California Education Code; many work sheets, sample forms, summary sheets, checklists, rubrics, matrices, and definitions; and an action plan for each of the seven steps. The seven steps in the planning process are as follows: (1) Identify your safe-school planning committee members; (2) create a vision of your school as a place where students are safe to learn, and base that vision on youth development; (3) gather and analyze data; (4) identify strengths and areas of desired change, and set major annual goals for each of the two safe-school components; (5) select and implement strategies; (6) communicate the safety plan to the public, hold public meetings for input, and keep the updated plan available for public inspection; and (7) evaluate your progress, revise the plan annually, and include the plan in your school accountability report card. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of children and adults across the nation spend their days in school buildings, and they need safe, healthy environments to thrive, learn, and succeed. This book explores the school environment using the methods and perspectives of environmental health science. Though environmental healht has long been understood to be an important factor in workplaces, homes, and communities, this is the first book to address the same basic concerns in schools. The editors are physicians and educators trained in pediatrics, occupational and environmental medicine, and medical toxicology, and the authors are experts in their fields drawn from across the United States and abroad. Each section of the book addresses a different concern facing schools today. In the first six sections, the various aspects of the school environment are examined. Chapters include the physical environment of the school, air quality issues, pest control, cleaning methods, food safety, safe designs of playgrounds and sports fields, crime and violence prevention, and transportation. In the last two sections, recommendations are made for school administrators on how to maximize the health of their schools. Appropriately evaluating the school environment, implementing strategies to address children and adults with disabilities, emphasizing health services, infectious disease prevention and recognition, and occupational health for faculty and staff are all addressed. The entire book is evidence-based, readable, generously illustrated, and practical. An indispensable resource for parents, school staff, administrators, government officials, and health professionals, this book is for anyone who cares about the health of our schools.

The authors identify four necessary phases to achieve this (prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery) and provide numerous examples and tools to help readers create safe environments, while also addressing students’ academic, emotional, and social needs. An emphasis is placed on the importance of the balance between physical and psychological safety within a multi-tiered framework - it is not enough for students to know their school is secure; they must also feel they are safe and can turn to their teachers and school-based mental health professionals with their concerns. Aaccompanying downloadable resources contain several valuable resources, such as forms, handouts, articles, and monitoring tools.
