Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implementing Value at Risk Philip Best Value at Risk (VAR) is an estimate of the potential loss on a trading or investment portfolio. Its use has swept the banking world and is now accepted as an essential tool in any risk manager's briefcase. Perhaps the greatest strength of VAR is that it can cope with virtually all financial products, from simple securities through to complex exotic derivatives. This allows the risk taken, across diverse trading activities, to be compared. This said, VAR is no panacea. It is as critical to understand when the use of VAR is inappropriate as it is to understand the value VAR can add to a bank's understanding and control of its risks. This book aims to explain how VAR can be used as an integral part of a risk and business management framework, rather than as a stand-alone tool. The objectives of this book are to explain: What VAR is - and isn't! How to calculate VAR - the three main methods Why stress testing is needed to complement VAR How to make stress testing effective How to use VAR and stress testing to manage risk How to use VAR to improve a bank's performance VAR as a regulatory measure of risk and capital Risk management practitioners, general bank managers, consultants and students of finance and risk management will find this book, and the software package included, an invaluable addition to their library. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good Strategy/Bad Strategy clarifies the muddled thinking underlying too many strategies and provides a clear way to create and implement a powerful action-oriented strategy for the real world. Developing and implementing a strategy is the central task of a leader. A good strategy is a specific and coherent response to—and approach for—overcoming the obstacles to progress. A good strategy works by harnessing and applying power where it will have the greatest effect. Yet, Rumelt shows that there has been a growing and unfortunate tendency to equate Mom-and-apple-pie values, fluffy packages of buzzwords, motivational slogans, and financial goals with “strategy.” In Good Strategy/Bad Strategy, he debunks these elements of “bad strategy” and awakens an understanding of the power of a “good strategy.” He introduces nine sources of power—ranging from using leverage to effectively focusing on growth—that are eye-opening yet pragmatic tools that can easily be put to work on Monday morning, and uses fascinating examples from business, nonprofit, and military affairs to bring its original and pragmatic ideas to life. The detailed examples range from Apple to General Motors, from the two Iraq wars to Afghanistan, from a small local market to Wal-Mart, from Nvidia to Silicon Graphics, from the Getty Trust to the Los Angeles Unified School District, from Cisco Systems to Paccar, and from Global Crossing to the 2007–08 financial crisis. Reflecting an astonishing grasp and integration of economics, finance, technology, history, and the brilliance and foibles of the human character, Good Strategy/Bad Strategy stems from Rumelt’s decades of digging beyond the superficial to address hard questions with honesty and integrity.

Book excerpt: The Best-Value procurement strategy is gaining interest from federal and state agencies. The strategy increases the value added to the project for each dollar added. This report discusses a new concept of Best-Value, that is; a rational and flexible model based on expected performance. The model flexibility is obvious in the selection of parameters, to be included in the contractor selection process, and in the determination of the parameter's weights. The model rationality will be achieved through relating all awarded score to the agency's expected performance. The establishment of the Best-Value model calls the past record of the contractor work for the agency as an indicator of qualification trend. Contractor Best-Value will be the base in selecting the most appropriate contractor that has the best qualifications for a given project. Data are collected from groups of experts in the Minnesota Department of Transportation and processed through the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to establish the parameter weights. While this research assists DOTs in selecting the best contractor, the shared results are relevant to both academics and practitioners. A computer software "MnCAST" has been developed to help implementing the developed Best-Value system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best-Practice EVA tells the new EVA story from the ground up. Stewart covers EVA essentials—the classic economic profit version of EVA—in the first three chapters of the book. He shows readers how simple and intuitive EVA really is, how it is defined, and why it is better than all other measures of corporate profit. You discover how it naturally guides managers into making all the right decisions—the ones that will truly maximize value. You see how to use it in profit-sharing bonus plans that create the powerful incentives of an owner. Later, Stewart introduces new ratios that make EVA much more powerful and much easier to use than ever before. The pinnacle of the new ratio framework is EVA Momentum, calculated by taking the change in EVA versus the prior period, and dividing by the revenues in the prior period. It measures the growth rate in EVA, scaled to the sales size of the business. It is the only corporate performance ratio where bigger always is better, because it gets bigger when EVA does, which means it should be every company's most important financial goal, the one ratio metric that everyone aims to maximize as the key measure of corporate success. Stewart then walks through the nuts and bolts of Best-Practice EVA, kicking off with an in-depth look at EVA Margin, or EVA as a percent of sales. It’s a key productivity metric, and Stewart’s candidate to replace ROI. The last link in the Best-Practice program is PRVit—the EVA market score report. Stewart shows how to read and interpret the report, how the score is determined, and why investors are turning to it to screen and rate stocks. He also shows why it is finding a home with CFOs and IR directors who want insights into how the market is pricing their stock. The book concludes with battle-tested tips from the firing line, practical suggestions for how you can test drive and adopt Best-Practice EVA at your company.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An efficient and cost-effective HR function is essential to the successful running of any organization. And yet for many businesses it is impossible or costly to have HR staff in every office. This is particularly true for companies who have many branches, such as banks and building societies. So what are they to do? Increasingly they are turning to shared services by creating a unit within the organization that typically undertakes personnel administration and basic operational support. This may be delivered to managers and employees through some combination of call centre, personal contact or intranet. Creating a shared services centre enables the HR function to redefine its relationship with its stakeholders. It can become more of a strategic player and make a more business-focused contribution. This book explains what shared services are and what they look like for the HR function. It describes why organizations opt for shared services and what activities are included. It sets out the relationship between shared services and the other HR activities, and between HR and line management. How To Get Best Value From HR outlines the process of introducing shared services, from identifying customer needs through designing the structure to implementation and monitoring. It also outlines the likely pitfalls and, importantly, offers possible solutions. In particular the book highlights the big design issues, including whether to outsource services, where a shared services centre should be located, how services should be delivered and organized, including through the option of e-HR. Crucially it features an extended case study of the Royal Bank of Scotland's experience of introducing HR shared services, providing a unique insight into the reality of this new way of working.

This book was released on 2007-03-28 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000 requires the Northern Ireland Policing Board to make arrangements to secure continuous improvement in the way in which their functions and those of the Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) are exercised, with particular focus on economy, efficiency and effectiveness. This is the fourth NAO report on the audit of the current best value performance plan. The Policing Board and PSNI have made significant progress in implementing the recommendations of past inspections by NAO and HM Inspector of Constabulary. The proposed performance indicators and standards for 2006-07 are reasonable, but could be improved. Some previous indicators have been dropped, and an explanation would help transparency. The methodology used to select the Best Value Reviews is thorough but again the decision-making process is not clear. The report also recommends improvements in the reporting of performance against standards, particularly where standards have not been achieved.
