The quality of simulation studies varies depending on the project objectives, finances and expertise available. Consideration has to be given to the model accuracy and the amount of time required carrying out a simulation study to produce the desired accuracy. Inconsistent approaches and insufficient documentation make quality assessment and comparison of simulation results difficult or almost impossible. A general framework for the application of activated sludge models is needed in order to overcome these obstacles. The genesis of the Good Modelling Practice (GMP) Task Group lies in a workshop held at the 4th IWA World Water Congress in Marrakech, Morocco where members of research groups active in wastewater treatment modelling came together to develop plans to synthesize the best practices of modellers from all over the world. The most cited protocols were included in the work, amongst others from: HSG (Hochschulgruppe), STOWA, BIOMATH and WERF. The goal of the group is to set up an internationally accepted framework to deal with the ASM type models in practice. This framework shall make modelling more straightforward and systematic to use especially for practitioners and consultants. Additionally, it shall help to define quality levels for simulation results, a procedure to assess this quality and to assist in the proper use of the models. The framework will describe a methodology for goal-oriented application of activated sludge models demonstrated by means of a concise guideline about the procedure of a simulation study and some illustrative case studies. The case studies shall give examples for the required data quality and quantity and the effort for calibration/validation with respect to a defined goal. The final report will include an extended appendix with additional information and details of methodologies. Additional features in Guidelines for Using Activated Sludge Models include a chapter on modelling industrial wastewater, an overview on the history, current practice and future of activated sludge modelling and several explanatory case studies. It can be used as an introductory book to learn about Good Modelling Practice (GMP) in activated sludge modelling and will be of special interest for process engineers who have no prior knowledge of modelling or for lecturers who need a textbook for their students. The main feature of this area is the introduction of innovative concepts and tools from emerging information modelling technologies into the traditional field of WWT process modelling. The model identification procedure is viewed as a learning problem or, equivalently, an information transfer from a set of real data into the process model. An innovative mathematical framework for the identification and validation of dynamic mechanistically based WWT process models is developed. Within this framework, a relationship between the model identification procedure and the computational machine learning methodology is established at the foundational level. The deviation D between model prediction and the real process behaviour is characterized mathematically in terms of some simple variables that govern model performance--namely: (1) the size of the data set used for model identification; (2) the quality of these data; (3) the model complexity; (4) the empirical measure of D computed on the basis of the foregoing data set. The development of the relationship between D and these variables is based on a principle called " Inductive Principle of Empirical Risk Minimization" ( IPERM ). The conditions of applicability of IPERM are thoroughly examined in the case of the activated sludge process being described by a simple mechanistic model denoted M . The Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC) dimension of this model is estimated and two uncertainty models are developed for the activated sludge process (ASP). These two uncertainty models are compared and the differences between them accounted for. The following result is established: empirical data cannot compensate for our limited knowledge of process mechanisms, even if an infinite amount of data and computing power are made available during the model identification procedure. Measures of process model maximal and marginal improvements are developed. It is established that 80% of the model ( M ) maximal improvement occurs at a number of data points of about N80% 15 to 18. To achieve the other 20%, N has to be increased from the relatively small number N 80% to infinity. Procedures for computing the marginal cost of process model improvement and the guaranteed prediction accuracy of the identified model are developed. A new approach to modelling the activated sludge process itself and dealing with the almost-infinite degree of complexity of the ASP behaviour is developed. The basic idea of this approach is to construct an infinite series NS of nested mechanistic models of increasing complexity. This nested series is developed using the multi-substrate hypothesis. Both the Monod and the Tiessier models are considered in developing this nested series. Another principle called "Inductive Principle of Structural Risk Minimization" ( IPSRM ) is introduced and implemented to determine the optimal model structure complexity, for a fixed and small number N of data points. Computer simulations are carried out to confirm the theory and illustrate the use of the IPSRM and that of the nested series NS of ASP models.

However, calibrating these models are extremely time consuming and laborious. An easy-to-calibrate and user friendly computer model, one of the artificial intelligence techniques, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were used in this study. These models can be used not only directly as a substitute for deterministic models but also can be plugged into the system as error predictors. Three systems were modeled by using ANN models. Initially, a hypothetical wastewater treatment plant constructed in Simulation of Single-Sludge Processes for Carbon Oxidation, Nitrification & Denitrification (SSSP) program, which is an implementation of Activated Sludge Model No 1 (ASM1), was used as the source of input and output data. The other systems were actual treatment plants, Ankara Central Wastewater Treatment Plant, ACWTP and Ýskenderun Wastewater Treatment Plant (IskWTP). A sensitivity analysis was applied for the hypothetical plant for both of the model simulation results obtained by the SSSP program and the developed ANN model. Sensitivity tests carried out by comparing the responses of the two models indicated parallel sensitivities. In hypothetical WWTP modeling, the highest correlation coefficient obtained with ANN model versus SSSP was about 0.980. By using actual data from IskWTP the best fit obtained by the ANN model yielded R value of 0.795 can be considered very high with such a noisy data. Similarly, ACWTP the R value obtained was 0.688, where accuracy of fit is debatable.
