Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) is typically conducted in the United States according to ASTM Standard 5778-07 (2007). This standard specifies that the rate of penetration during testing must be 2.0 ± 0.5 cm/s for electronic cones. While this standard has served to establish a reference condition that is easily implemented and has well known correlations for evaluating soil behavior and properties, it does not allow for evaluation of the effects of penetration rate variation. Controlled variation of the cone penetration rate can provide additional information about the subsurface (e.g. estimates of drained or undrained strength or hydraulic conductivity) by directly manipulating soil drainage conditions during penetration. The use of varying penetration rates has been investigated in the laboratory and theoretically using analytical methods, but relatively little field testing has been completed with significant variations from the standard rate. A variable penetration rate cone testing (VPRCPT) field system capable of varying penetration rates over a range of 0.002 cm/s to 20 cm/s (four orders of magnitude) and maintaining precise and accurate penetration rate control was developed. The key components enabling performance over this range were high quality proportional hydraulic valves coupled with an electronic motion controller. The system has been tested in the laboratory under controlled conditions and at field locations described in this thesis. The results of field testing confirm the trends identified previously and indicate potential benefits of using controlled penetration rate variation to provide further information for interpretation of soil properties and classification.
