This standard specifies that the rate of penetration during testing must be 2.0 ± 0.5 cm/s for electronic cones. While this standard has served to establish a reference condition that is easily implemented and has well known correlations for evaluating soil behavior and properties, it does not allow for evaluation of the effects of penetration rate variation. Controlled variation of the cone penetration rate can provide additional information about the subsurface (e.g. estimates of drained or undrained strength or hydraulic conductivity) by directly manipulating soil drainage conditions during penetration. The use of varying penetration rates has been investigated in the laboratory and theoretically using analytical methods, but relatively little field testing has been completed with significant variations from the standard rate. A variable penetration rate cone testing (VPRCPT) field system capable of varying penetration rates over a range of 0.002 cm/s to 20 cm/s (four orders of magnitude) and maintaining precise and accurate penetration rate control was developed. The key components enabling performance over this range were high quality proportional hydraulic valves coupled with an electronic motion controller. The system has been tested in the laboratory under controlled conditions and at field locations described in this thesis. The results of field testing confirm the trends identified previously and indicate potential benefits of using controlled penetration rate variation to provide further information for interpretation of soil properties and classification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written for the benefit of engineering students and practicing engineers alike, is the culmination of the author's four decades of experience related to the subject of electrical measurements, comprising nearly 30 years of experimental research and more than 15 years of teaching at several engineering institutions. The unique feature of this book, apart from covering the syllabi of various universities, is the style of presentation of all important aspects and features of electrical measurements, with neatly and clearly drawn figures, diagrams and colour and b/w photos that illustrate details of instruments among other things, making the text easy to follow and comprehend. Enhancing the chapters are interspersed explanatory comments and, where necessary, footnotes to help better understanding of the chapter contents. Also, each chapter begins with a "recall" to link the subject matter with the related science or phenomenon and fundamental background. The first few chapters of the book comprise "Units, Dimensions and Standards"; "Electricity, Magnetism and Electromagnetism" and "Network Analysis". These topics form the basics of electrical measurements and provide a better understanding of the main topics discussed in later chapters. The last two chapters represent valuable assets of the book, and relate to (a) "Magnetic Measurements", describing many unique features not easily available elsewhere, a good study of which is essential for the design and development of most electric equipment – from motors to transformers and alternators, and (b) "Measurement of Non-electrical Quantities", dealing extensively with the measuring techniques of a number of variables that constitute an important requirement of engineering measurement practices. The book is supplemented by ten appendices covering various aspects dealing with the art and science of electrical measurement and of relevance to some of the topics in main chapters. Other useful features of the book include an elaborate chapter-by-chapter list of symbols, worked examples, exercises and quiz questions at the end of each chapter, and extensive authors' and subject index. This book will be of interest to all students taking courses in electrical measurements as a part of a B.Tech. in electrical engineering. Professionals in the field of electrical engineering will also find the book of use.

Book excerpt: The electronic cone penetrometer is a popular in situ investigation tool for site characterization. This research report describes the application of this proven concept of the cone penetration test (CPT) to highway design and construction control by miniaturization. A miniature cone penetrometer with a projected cone area of 2 sq cm has been developed and implemented in a Continuous Intrusion Miniature Cone Penetration Test system (CIMCPT). This novel device may be used for rapid, accurate and economical characterization of sites and to determine engineering soil parameters needed in the design of pavements, embankments, and earth structures.

Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.
