Despite evidence that dysphoric individuals are less likely than nondysphoric individuals to use adaptive emotion regulation strategies spontaneously, effects related to instructed reappraisal among dysphoric individuals are not well understood. For instance, evidence suggests that dysphoria is associated with intolerance of intense emotion; yet, no study has examined the effect of spontaneous and instructed emotion regulation strategy use on intensity or intolerance of emotional experiences. The current study examined spontaneous and instructed emotion regulation in dysphoric (n = 23) and nondysphoric (n = 41) participants in response to two sadness-inducing film clips. Participants viewed one film clip without any emotion regulation instruction (i.e., spontaneous condition) and one film clip with an instruction to use reappraisal (i.e., instructed condition).
