Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thorsten B. Veblen’s book, Imperial Germany and the Industrial Revolution, published in the second year of the First World War. Although Imperial Germany was begun before the United States entered World War I, little in the book however relates to that particular conflict. Rather, this is in large part a study of the divergencies in cultural development between the English-speaking peoples and the German-speaking peoples, and of the consequences this produced in economic and social spheres. Suppressed by war censors, this text was again released after the war and has assumed a place as a major contribution to economics and sociology alike. This edition is graced with an insightful opening essay that is at once a commentary on Veblen's volume and a statement of historic status of the German economy and society. The new opening statement underscores the view of those who came before, that Veblen's book is 'a treasure chest of knowledge'.

Book excerpt: In 'Imperial Germany & the Industrial Revolution' by Thorstein Veblen, the author explores the economic and social impact of industrialization in Germany during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Veblen's academic and analytical writing style provides a detailed examination of the changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution, including the rise of capitalism and the shift from agrarian to industrial economies. He also delves into the cultural and political consequences of industrialization, shedding light on the power dynamics and societal transformations that occurred during this period. Thorstein Veblen, a renowned economist and sociologist, drew upon his expertise in economic theory and social science to write this insightful book. His critical perspective and in-depth research make 'Imperial Germany & the Industrial Revolution' a valuable resource for scholars and students interested in the history of industrialization and its effects on society. I highly recommend 'Imperial Germany & the Industrial Revolution' to readers seeking a comprehensive analysis of the economic and social changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution in Germany. Veblen's scholarly approach and nuanced insights provide a profound understanding of the complex dynamics of industrialization during this transformative period.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imperial Germany and the Industrial Revolution Among men who have no articulate acquaintance with matters of ethnology it is usual to speak of the several nations of Europe as district races. Even official documents and painstaking historians are not free from this confusion of ideas. In this colloquial use "race" is not conceived to be precisely synonymous with "nation," nor with "people;" although it would often be a difficult matter to make out from the context just what distinctive meaning is attached to one or another of these terms. They are used loosely and suggestively, and for may purposes they may doubtless be so used without compromise of confusion to the arguments; so that it might seem the part of reason to take them as they come, with allowance for such margin of error as necessarily attaches to their colloquial use, and without taking thought of a closer definition or a more discriminate use than what contents those who so find these terms convenient for use in all their colloquial ambiguity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The working paper is divided into two main parts. The first part is a descriptive analysis of the illicit use of biological agents by criminals and terrorists. It draws on a series of case studies documented in the second part. The case studies describe every instance identifiable in open source materials in which a perpetrator used, acquired, or threatened to use a biological agent. While the inventory of cases is clearly incomplete, it provides an empirical basis for addressing a number of important questions relating to both biocrimes and bioterrorism. This material should enable policymakers concerned with bioterrorism to make more informed decisions. In the course of this project, the author has researched over 270 alleged cases involving biological agents. This includes all incidents found in open sources that allegedly occurred during the 20th Century. While the list is certainly not complete, it provides the most comprehensive existing unclassified coverage of instances of illicit use of biological agents.
