Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This tenth-anniversary edition of the game-changing #1 New York Times bestseller features a new foreword and new tools to make the work your own. For over a decade, Brené Brown has found a special place in our hearts as a gifted mapmaker and a fellow traveler. She is both a social scientist and a kitchen-table friend whom you can always count on to tell the truth, make you laugh, and, on occasion, cry with you. And what’s now become a movement all started with The Gifts of Imperfection, which has sold more than two million copies in thirty-five different languages across the globe. What transforms this book from words on a page to effective daily practices are the ten guideposts to wholehearted living. The guideposts not only help us understand the practices that will allow us to change our lives and families, they also walk us through the unattainable and sabotaging expectations that get in the way. Brené writes, “This book is an invitation to join a wholehearted revolution. A small, quiet, grassroots movement that starts with each of us saying, ‘My story matters because I matter.’ Revolution might sound a little dramatic, but in this world, choosing authenticity and worthiness is an absolute act of resistance.”

Book excerpt: A unique way of seeing and thinking, and an attention to detail are what shape Chef Janice Wong's inventive desserts - creations applauded by some of the world's most celebrated chefs from French chocolatier-patissier Pierre Herme to Spanish chef-restauranteurs Juan Mari and Elena Arzak. Through this book, the creative mind behind 2am: dessertbar invites you to enter her world. It is a world where beauty is everything, where no detail is too small to appreciate. This is not an ordinary cookbook. It is an exploration of the mind and senses, of perceptions and emotions. The chapters - Origins of Taste, Colours of Taste, Textures of Taste and Memories of Taste - explore the inspirations behind each of her creations, be it the unique, natural flavour of an ingredient, a distinct hue that evokes an emotion, an unexpected texture that jolts the senses, a nostalgic taste that allows the mind to wander back to childhood days. These seemingly disparate sources of inspiration and the creations that stem from them are all threaded by a commonality, a pursuit for perfection in imperfection, and an appreciation of imperfection in perfection. Welcome to Janice Wong's artistic, gastronomic world of flawless imperfection and flawed perfection.

Book excerpt: Spirituality has to do with a whole Christian vision of life, not simply with methods of prayer or contemplation. The author approaches the subject through the idea of 'imperfection', tracing this theme through a series of spiritual writers from different periods of Christian history. These are penetrating and illuminating studies which show how from the start and throughout its history the Christian vision is not one for an elite but for everyone, sinners all. The religion of the Cross is the religion of failure turned to account, creatively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, the teaching authority of the Catholic Church has attempted to walk along with the modern world, criticizing what is bad and praising what is good. Counsels of Imperfection described the current state of that fairly bumpy journey. The book is divided into 11 chapters. First comes an introduction to ever-changing modernity and the unchanging Christian understanding of human nature and society. Then come two chapters on economics, including a careful delineation of the Catholic response, past and present, to socialism and capitalism. The next topic is government, with one chapter on Church and State, another on War, and a third that runs quickly through democracy, human rights, the welfare state, crimes and punishments (including the death penalty), anti-Semitism, and migration. Counsels of Imperfection then dedicates two chapters on ecology, including an enthusiastic analysis of Francis’s “technocratic paradigm”. The last topic is the family teaching, which presents the social aspects of the Church’s sexual teaching. A brief concluding chapter looks at the teaching’s changing response to the modern world, and at the ambiguous Catholic appreciation of the modern idea of progress. For each topic, Counsels of Imperfection provides biblical, historical and a broad philosophical background. Thomas Aquinas appears often, but so does G. W. F Hegel. The goal is not only to explain what the Church really says, but also how it got to its current position and who it is arguing with. In the spirit of a doctrine that is always in development, Counsels of Imperfection points out both strong-points and imperfections in the teaching. The book should be of interest to specialists in Catholic Social Teaching, but its main audience is curious newcomers, especially people who do not want to be told that there are simple Catholic answers to the complicated problems of the modern world.

Book excerpt: "... aspirations to perfection awaken us to our actual imperfection." It is in the space between these aspirations and our inability to achieve them that Grant reflects upon imperfection. Grant argues that an awareness of imperfection, defined as both suffering and the need for justice, drive us to an unrelenting search for perfection, freedom, and self-determination. The twenty-one brief chapters of Imperfection develop this governing idea as it relates to the present situation of the God debate, modern ethnic conflicts, and the pursuit of freedom in relation to the uncertainties of personal identity and the quest for self-determination.

Book excerpt: Susan Cain, New York Times bestselling author of Quiet: "The world could surely use a little more love, a little more compassion, and a little more wisdom. In Love for Imperfect Things, Haemin Sunim shows us how to cultivate all three, and to find beauty in the most imperfect of things--including your very own self." A #1 internationally bestselling book of spiritual wisdom about learning to love ourselves, with all our imperfections, by the Buddhist author of The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down Hearing the words "be good to yourself first, then to others" was like being struck by lightning. Many of us respond to the pressures of life by turning inward and ignoring problems, sometimes resulting in anxiety or depression. Others react by working harder at the office, at school, or at home, hoping that this will make ourselves and the people we love happier. But what if being yourself is enough? Just as we are advised on airplanes to take our own oxygen first before helping others, we must first be at peace with ourselves before we can be at peace with the world around us. In this beautiful follow-up to his international bestseller The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down, Zen Buddhist monk Haemin Sunim turns his trademark wisdom to the art of self-care, arguing that only by accepting yourself--and the flaws that make you who you are--can you have compassionate and fulfilling relationships with your partner, your family, and your friends. With more than thirty-five full-color illustrations, Love for Imperfect Things will appeal to both your eyes and your heart, and help you learn to love yourself, your life, and everyone in it. When you care for yourself first, the world begins to find you worthy of care.

While conservative scholars and pastors have struggled for years to show that the Bible is without errors, Boyd considers this a fool's errand. Instead, he says, we should embrace the mistakes and contradictions in Scripture, for they show that God chose to use fallible humans to communicate timeless truths. Just as God ultimately came to save humanity in the form of a human, God chose to impart truth through the imperfect medium of human writing. Instead of the Bible's imperfections being a reason to attack its veracity, these "problems" actually support the trustworthiness of Christian Scripture. Inspired Imperfection is required reading for anyone who's questioned the Bible because of its contradictions.

Book excerpt: This book takes a fresh look at John Milton's major poems Paradise Lost, Samson Agonistes, and Paradise Regained and a few of the minor ones in light of a new analysis of Milton's famous tracts on divorce. Luxon contends that Milton's work is best understood as part of a major cultural project in which Milton assumed a leading role the redefinition of Protestant marriage as a heteroerotic version of classical friendship, originally a homoerotic cultural practice. Schooled in the humanist notion that man was created as a godlike being, Milton also believed that what marked man as different from God is loneliness. Milton's reading of Genesis it is not good for man to be alone prescribes a wife as the remedy for this single imperfection, but Milton thought marriage had fallen to such a degraded state that it required a reformation. As a humanist, Milton looked to classical culture, especially to Plato, Aristotle, and Cicero, for a more dignified model of human relations friendship. Milton reimagined marriage as a classical friendship, without explicitly conceptualizing the issues of gender construction. Nor did he allow the chief tenet of classical friendship, equality, to claim a place in reformed marriage. Single Imperfection traces the path of friendship theory through Milton's epistolary friendship with Charles Diodati, his elegies, divorce pamphlets, and major poems. The book will prompt even more reinterpretations of Milton's poetry in an age that is anxiously redefining marriage once again.

And how do you balance the sometimes different needs of spiritual and psychological perspectives? Rob Preece draws on his personal experience—over two decades as a psychotherapist and many years as a meditation teacher—to explore and map the psychological influences on our struggle to awaken. For psychological and spiritual health, acceptance of imperfection is key. Wisdom does not always come as a flash of inspiration but from the slow, often painful workings of experience. As we detach from our ideals of perfection and develop our acceptance of imperfection, our love and compassion can grow in ways that are both psychologically and spiritually healthy. The Wisdom of Imperfection delves into this journey of individuation in Buddhist life, articulating the psychological processes beneath the traditional path of the Bodhisattva.

Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK: ** PERFECTION and IMPERFECTION in the Universe? ** GOODNESS and EVIL in our World? ** Dr. Michael Walsh (mathematician/philosopher, Trinity College Dublin) has pondered for many years these two great topics and has done extensive research into them. He provides a wide-ranging analysis of the legacy of many great thinkers - Aristotle, Plato, Aquinas, Newton, Michelangelo, Leibniz, Darwin, Heisenberg, Godel, Einstein, Penrose, Hawking - all from the illuminating perspective of perfection/imperfection, goodness/ evil.** Dr. Walsh outlines the need for an entirely new intellectual framework and vocabulary for the debate of these important topics. He concludes that neither science nor religion offer satisfying methodologies or any convincing answers. Religion has a problem in explaining evil and science has a problem in explaining goodness. In physical creation and in life, imperfection abounds and perfection plays no ostensible role. An entirely different starting point is needed. ** The book identifies the fundamental boundaries of science, and argues for a much wider vision. It does not argue for the existence of a God, but it shows the clear necessity for a guiding force acting from outside of space and time and thus beyond the reach of scientific analysis. Many scientists now accept this need even some physical phenomena clearly belong to the metaphysical. ** The presence of evil and imperfection does not necessarily imply lack of purpose or design or the absence of a Creator; they can be part of a purposeful strategy of creation. The extraordinary trajectory of the universe to date indicates a journey with purpose and destination, albeit zig-zag with plenty of accidents along the way. A bold new model is proposed. Imperfection is identified in the book as the Workshop of Creation. In this workshop the tiger was forged. ** YOU-TUBE VIDEO - http://youtu.be/GGJM3yiihy0 ** WEBSITE: www.immperfection.com
