Book excerpt: Based on long-term roadside call counts performed by Texas Parks and Wildlife, scaled quail numbers have been declining since the mid to late 1980's in the Rolling Plains and SHP of Texas. Rollins (2000) reported that northwest Texas as well as the Oklahoma panhandle have only "relic populations" since the early 1990's, meaning current scaled quail distributions are smaller and more fragmented than before. However, the Trans-Pecos and Edwards Plateau ecoregions have the greatest abundance of scaled quail according to 15-yr data trends in the TPWD Forecast. Although there is a considerable amount of literature on this species, much of their ecology, specifically nesting and brood ecology, is not well understood (Silvy et al. 2007). Scaled quail survival rates have been estimated to be between 15-70%, depending on the study region.
Book Synopsis Assessing the Potential Effects of Tebuthiuron on Shrub Encroached Scaled Quail Habitat Using a Dynamic Systems Approach by : Nathan Forrest East

This book was released on 2016 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shrub encroachment by creosotebush (Larrea tridentata; LATR) in desert black grama (Bourteloua eriopoda; BOER) grasslands is suspected of negatively effecting scaled quail (Callipepla squamata) habitat and populations. To better understand the possible effects of habitat restoration on scaled quail in shrub encroached habitat, I used a dynamic systems modeling approach to quantify and assess the use of the herbicide tebuthiuron (TEB) under the limitations of current knowledge. I did this in accordance with the objective of the Conversation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP). A dynamic systems model allows for scenario analysis given current system understanding and knowledge. My model showed that BOER and LATR will reach equilibrium in the presence of each other after approximately 100 years given a stochastic but stable precipitation regime and a constant rate of herbivory. Sensitivity analysis showed that LATR recovery from TEB treatment takes approximately 100 years based on chemical persistence of TEB in the soil. The model suggests that the time before LATR resurgence can be increased by reduced herbivory, increased precipitation, or lower precipitation stochasticity. The model suggests that TEB application modifies shrub-encroached landscape to a closer approximation of scaled quail habitat, as referenced by New Mexico Game and Fish guidelines, for a period of approximately 150 years, given average annual rainfall, moderate grazing, and the persistence of TEB. This approach provides a means of quantifying vegetation change in relation to species habitat by averaging the differences between the modeled plant species output and the benchmark of recommended levels for a single wildlife species habitat.
Book Synopsis The Relationship Between Invasive Shrubs and American Woodcock (Scolopax Minor) Nesting Success and Habitat Selection by : H. Eric Miller

This book was released on 2010 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Habitat loss is thought to be a cause of historical woodcock population declines, however little is known about whether the encroachment of invasive vegetation may be affecting woodcock nest site selection and nesting success. I examined whether nest success and habitat selection were related to invasive vegetation presence. In March and April of 2009 and 2010, I located and recorded data in 26 plots (13 nests, 13 random) in southeastern Pennsylvania. I used logistic regression and Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIC) to determine the best models of success and habitat use. I also considered woodcock nesting habitat selection from a second order spatial scale. Nine nests and four random points were located in cover that contained a low percentage of invasive shrubs. I detected significant differences between invasive woody vegetation at successful and unsuccessful nests and used and random sites. AIC weights indicated that models containing percentage of invasive woody vegetation were highly supported for nest success and habitat selection. Additionally, nest success and habitat use decreased with an increase in percentage of invasive woody vegetation. When viewed at a landscape scale, woodcock selected native vegetation composition for nesting within covers classified as invasive. I recommend that mangers attempt to control and remove invasive vegetation to promote increased woodcock nesting success and habitat use.

Book Synopsis Resource Selection by Animals by : B.F. Manly
Download or read book Resource Selection by Animals written by B.F. Manly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have written this book as a guide to the design and analysis of field studies of resource selection, concentrating primarily on statistical aspects of the comparison of the use and availability of resources of different types. Our intended audience is field ecologists in general and, in particular, wildlife and fisheries biologists who are attempting to measure the extent to which real animal populations are selective in their choice of food and habitat. As such, we have made no attempt to address those aspects of theoretical ecology that are concerned with how animals might choose their resources if they acted in an optimal manner. The book is based on the concept of a resource selection function (RSF), where this is a function of characteristics measured on resourceunits such that its value for a unit is proportional to the probability of that unit being used. We argue that this concept leads to a unified theory for the analysis and interpretation of data on resource selection and can replace many ad hoc statistical methods that have been used in the past.

Book Synopsis Endangered Species Threatened Convention by : Barnabas Dickson
Download or read book Endangered Species Threatened Convention written by Barnabas Dickson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) is the best known and most controversial of international conservation treaties. Since it came into force 25 years ago, debate has raged over its most basic assumptions. CITES treats the international trade in wildlife as the most important threat to the continued existence of wild species. It offers a prescription of trade bans and restrictions for endangered species. However, it is now generally acknowledged that for most species habitat loss is a much more significant threat. Some argue that the CITES remedy actually exacerbates the problem by removing the incentive to conserve wildlife habitat. This collection of essays, the first of its kind, charts the controversies and changes within CITES. It provides case studies of the way CITES has dealt with particular species and notes the growing role of the South in shaping the direction of the treaty. It considers the role of sustainable use, the precautionary principle and unilateralism within CITES. Finally, it examines options for the future of CITES. Implicit within a number of the contributions is the recognition that questions of wildlife conservation cannot be divorced from wider issues of land use, development and social justice. This book provides an essential resource for policy makers, practitioners, academics and students concerned with conservation, development and trade.
Book Synopsis Population Ecology of the Bobwhite by : John L. Roseberry
Download or read book Population Ecology of the Bobwhite written by John L. Roseberry and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results and conclusions of the longest continuous study ever undertaken for a local North American game bird population. Since 1950 abundance has been determined seasonally by direct count, nesting ecology by field searches and observation, and hunting pressure and harvest by field interviews. Land use and weather conditions also have been recorded. The period of the study saw considerable change in regional land use and included several of the most severe winters in recorded weather history. Continuing harvest of the study population did not have a progressively depressing effect on standing densities; rather it held breeding stock somewhat below K at a more productive point on the growth curve. Roseberry and Klimstra report that there was clear evidence of an 8 to 10-year cycle within the study population. They found after examining a number of cycle theories that a close temporal relationship existed between their bobwhite data and the nodal lunar cycle described by Archibald (1977). Sound field techniques, long-term data acquisition, and appropriate mathematical and statistical treatment of the data combine to provide a significant contribution to what is known of not only bobwhite but basic population ecology.
Book Synopsis Texas Quails by : Leonard A. Brennan
Download or read book Texas Quails written by Leonard A. Brennan and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-27 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing is more evocative of the Texas outdoors than the whistled call of the bobwhite. While the familiar two-note greeting is now just a memory for most of us who live in the state’s growing urban sprawl, this bird is an economic commodity on par with crops and livestock in some regions of Texas. Three other native species of quail also inhabit Texas. Like the northern bobwhite, the scaled quail is significant as a game bird. The other two species, Gambel’s quail and Montezuma quail, are found in limited areas of southwestern Texas and represent an important indicator of forest, rangeland, and habitat conditions. Texas Quails presents the first complete assessment of the four species of quail found in this vast state. Experts describe each of them and examine all geographic regions of the state for historical and current population trends, habitat status, and research needs. These experts also discuss management practices, hunting issues, economics, and diseases. With the recent creation of the Texas Quail Conservation Initiative, this volume provides a timely and comprehensive view of quail science and stewardship.
