A Guelph Permeameter helped identify specific recharge areas and the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) provided meaningful recharge rates used for modeling Wild Horse Basin in southwest Texas. SWAT generated recharge values that were subsequently used in two transient MODFLOW simulations: one with the recharge distributed according to sediment unit location (distributed zonation), and one with the recharge concentrated in cells adjacent to the mountain fronts surrounding the basin (mountain-front zonation). When comparing the model results to historic well hydrographs, mountain-front recharge appeared to improve calibration. A deterministic analytical model like SWAT is helpful in estimating recharge in arid basins and can create meaningful input parameters for numerical models like MODFLOW. MODFLOW was in turn able to evaluate SWAT recharge estimations for Wild Horse Basin using calibration and sensitivity analyses.

Book excerpt: The development of natural grass/scrubland for agricultural use within the Trans-Pecos basins has altered recharge mechanisms and raised questions about groundwater sustainability. Past efforts focused on recharge in arid basin systems used three main assumptions: there is minimal modern recharge, no widespread recharge on basin floors, and no recharge from anthropogenic sources. However, in the Trans-Pecos, nitrate (NO3−) concentrations have increased in basin groundwater (up by 3-4 mg/l as NO3− in 40 yrs), refuting the "classic" model and posing water quality risks. Grazing and irrigated agriculture have impacted basin hydrology by altering vegetation regime and the magnitude and spatial distribution of infiltration. This has increased recharge, Cl-, and mobile N flux to basin groundwater. A series of spatially-distributed net infiltration models were used to estimate potential recharge from natural and anthropogenic sources. Between 7-20% of potential recharge results from widespread recharge on the basin floors. Additionally, from 1960-2000, irrigation return flow may have contributed 3.0 9 107 - 6.3 9 107 m3 of recharge. These results are supported by field observations. Cores collected beneath agricultural land document changes in water content and pore water chemistry that imply increased downward flux of moisture and solute, and NO3− and Cl- inventories beneath irrigated land are distinct in amount and profile from those in natural areas. There are significant implications for sustainability based upon the trends in groundwater NO3− concentrations, core results, and net infiltration models: more recharge may enter the basins than previously estimated and there is a potential long-term concern for water quality. Due to thick unsaturated zones in the basins, long travel times are anticipated. It is unknown if NO3− and Cl- flux has peaked or if effects will continue for years to come. Further study should be undertaken to examine anthropogenic impacts on basin water quality. Additionally, these impacts may occur in similar systems globally and there is considerable evidence for the re-evaluation of the validity of the "classic" model of recharge in arid basin systems. Future studies and management plans should incorporate potential impacts of changes in vegetation and land use on recharge processes and water budgets in arid basins.

Particularly in arid regions, groundwater may be the most accessible water supply for any purpose, leaving groundwater withdrawals concentrated in areas that are already experiencing water stress. Even in the presence of direct ground observations and measurements of the water table, quantitative evaluation of groundwater storage, flow, or recharge at different scales requires remotely sensed data and observations applied to groundwater models. Resolving the interaction of groundwater storage, flow, and recharge at a scale at which basins are managed requires remotely sensed data and proxy data. In June 2019, the Water Science and Technology Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop to identify scientific and technological research frontiers in monitoring and modeling groundwater recharge and flow in various regions of the world. The goals of the workshop were to assess regional freshwater budgets under major use scenarios, including agriculture, industry, and municipal; examine state of the art research frontiers in characterizing groundwater aquifers, including residence time, quantity, flow, depletion, and recharge, using remotely sensed observations and proxy data; discuss groundwater model uncertainties and methods for mitigating them using sparse ground observations or data and other approaches; and consider our ability to detect which water management strategies that affect groundwater flow and recharge are being used and any changes in their use over time. Book excerpt: Alluvial groundwater systems are an important source of water for communities and biodiverse riparian corridors throughout the arid and semi-arid Basin and Range Geological Province of western North America. These aquifers and their attendant desert streams have been depleted to support a growing population, while projected climate change could lead to more extreme episodes of drought and precipitation in the future. The only source of replenishment to these aquifers is recharge. This dissertation builds upon previous work to characterize and quantify recharge in arid and semi-arid basins by characterizing the intra-annual seasonality of recharge across the Basin and Range Province, and considering how climate change might impact recharge seasonality and volume, as well as fragile riparian corridors that depend on these hydrologic processes. First, the seasonality of recharge in a basin in the sparsely-studied southern extent of the Basin and Range Province is determined using stable water isotopes of seasonal precipitation and groundwater, and geochemical signatures of groundwater and surface water. In northwestern Mexico in the southern reaches of the Basin and Range, recharge is dominated by winter precipitation (69% ± 42%) and occurs primarily in the uplands. Second, isotopically-based estimates of seasonal recharge fractions in basins across the region are compared to identify patterns in recharge seasonality, and used to evaluate a simple water budget-based model for estimating recharge seasonality, the normalized seasonal wetness index (NSWI). Winter precipitation makes up the majority of annual recharge throughout the region, and North American Monsoon (NAM) precipitation has a disproportionately weak impact on recharge. The NSWI does well in estimating recharge seasonality for basins in the northern Basin and Range, but less so in basins that experience NAM precipitation. Third, the seasonal variation in riparian and non-riparian vegetation greenness, represented by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), is characterized in several of the study basins and climatic and hydrologic controls are identified. Temperature was the most significant driver of vegetation greenness, but precipitation and recharge seasonality played a significant role in some basins at some elevations. Major contributions of this work include a better understanding of recharge in a monsoon-dominated basin, the characterization of recharge seasonality at a regional scale, evaluation of an estimation method for recharge seasonality, and an interpretation of the interaction of seasonal hydrologic processes, vegetation dynamics, and climate change.

Book excerpt: Regolith aquifers in the weathered zone overlying Precambrian basement rocks serve as the main source of groundwater in a large part of the Volta River basin in West Africa. A prerequisite for sustainable groundwater resources management is the knowledge of recharge processes and the annual recharge rate. This research assesses the water balance, and in particular the groundwater recharge rate, for the Atankwidi catchment, a 275 km² sub-catchment of the White Volta in northern Ghana. Large uncertainties are typically inherent in any singular method to determine groundwater recharge. For this reason, an integrated approach is developed in this work which makes use of several field methods and combines results from these methods with water budget modeling. Field methods included in this approach are groundwater level observations, isotope analyses and a Chloride mass balance. The Atankwidi catchment falls within the semi-arid Sudan-Savanna climate zone. The climate is characterized by high temperatures and a single rainy season from May to October with an average annual rainfall of 990 mm. The hydrogeological system consists of three aquifers: The discontinuous, shallow aquifer, the regolith aquifer and the fracture aquifer. The principal aquifer is the regolith aquifer in the weathered mantle, which is usually targeted for drinking water supply. It forms a continuous aquifer with an average saturated thickness of 25 m and a hydraulic conductivity of 2.5E-6 to 2.5E-5 m/s. Recharge rates vary considerably between wet and dry years and between locations, with a range of 2 % to 13 % of annual rainfall. The long term recharge rate is determined by the Chloride mass balance to be approximately 6 % of average annual rainfall. The research emphasizes the importance of high rainfall intensities in creating groundwater recharge. Interannual comparison of water level fluctuations shows that a decrease in annual rainfall of 20 % causes a reduction of groundwater recharge of 30 % to 60 %. The impact of changing quantities of annual rainfall on groundwater recharge is overestimated by methods that do not account for infiltration by preferential flow. A long term average groundwater recharge of 60 mm/y compares to a total current groundwater abstraction of 4 mm/y in the study area, which is one of the areas with the highest groundwater use per km² in the Volta River basin. Recharge is therefore currently not a limiting factor for groundwater resources development. Water budget modeling using WaSIM-ETH calculates that 63 % of annual rainfall is lost to evapotranspiration in a wet year (2003), and 82 % in a dry year (2004). In the investigated mesoscale catchment 23 % and 11 % of annual rainfall end up as surface run-off in a wet year and a dry year, respectively. Approximately 40 % of surface run-off consists of interflow, while the main fraction is direct run-off. Base flow from groundwater is negligible. Groundwater flow in the regolith aquifer is modeled with Visual Modflow, assuming average hydraulic conductivities as determined by pumping test evaluation. The model calculatesthat only about 5 % of groundwater recharge leaves the basin as groundwater flow. This is evidence that the regolith aquifer does not contribute to a large extent to regional groundwater flow. Leakage to localized zones of high hydraulic conductivity of the fracture aquifer, which underlies the regolith aquifer, could act as a main sink of groundwater recharge. However, the exact location and hydraulic properties of fracture zones are largely unknown, so that the flux from the regolith aquifer to these fractures as well as the amount of flow through fractures is impossible to estimate at present. Pumping tests with observation wells to assess the specific yield, long-term pumping test at the basin outlet and a continuation of groundwater hydrograph recording at high temporal resolution could largely enhance the knowledge of hydraulic properties in the future. The groundwater model could then be improved and extended to gain certainty on the characteristics of groundwater flow.
