Book excerpt: This annotated bibliography contains 1,905 citations from professional journals, symposia, workshops, proceedings, technical reports, and other sources. The intent of this compilation was to: (1) assemble, to the extent possible, all available and accessible publications relating to riparian management within a single source or document; (2) provide managers, field biologists, researchers, and others, a point of access for locating scientific literature relevent to their specific interest; and (3) provide, under one cover, a comprehensive collection of annotated publications that could dessiminate basic information relative to the status of our knowledge.

Book excerpt: After near-extirpation in the early 20th century, beaver populations are increasing throughout many parts of North America. Simultaneously, there is an emerging interest in employing beaver activity for stream restoration in arid and semi-arid environments (collectively, `drylands'), where streams and adjacent riparian ecosystems are expected to face heightened challenges from climate change and human population growth. However, despite growing interest in reintroduction programs, surprisingly little is known about the ecology of beaver in dryland streams, and science to guide management decisions is often fragmented and incomplete. In my first chapter I systematically reviewed the literature addressing the ecological effects and management of beaver activity in drylands of North America, highlighting conservation implications, distinctions between temperate and dryland streams, and knowledge gaps. Well-documented effects of beaver activity in drylands include changes to channel morphology and groundwater processes, creation of perennial wetland habitat, and substantial impacts to riparian vegetation. However, many hypothesized effects lack empirical evidence, especially from dryland streams. One of the most important areas of uncertainty identified by this review is the influence of beaver activity on the proliferation and success of non-native species. Streams of the American Southwest support a highly endangered native fish fauna and abundant non-native fishes, and in my second chapter I investigated the hypothesis that beaver ponds in this region may lead to fish assemblages dominated by non-native species. I sampled fish assemblages within beaver ponds and within unimpounded stream reaches in the free-flowing upper Verde River basin, central Arizona. I found that although non-native fishes consistently outnumbered native species, this dominance was greater in pond than in stream assemblages. Multivariate analysis indicated that fish assemblages in beaver ponds were distinct from those in stream reaches, in both mainstem and tributary locations. Few native species were recorded within ponds, while some non-natives, notably green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) and western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were abundant within ponds. Overall, this study provides evidence that, relative to unimpounded stream habitat, beaver ponds in the Verde River basin support abundant small-bodied non-native fishes, which could have negative impacts on co-occurring native fish populations.

Book excerpt: "Riparian systems of low order streams in the western United States (US) provide critical ecosystem functions and services such as diverse habitat for numerous species, flood attenuation and essential water storage in water limited environments. These systems have experienced long term disturbance from anthropogenic activities including mining, timber harvest, livestock grazing and near extirpation of a keystone riparian species, Castor canadensis (North American beaver). However, increasing frequency of large-scale wildfires and climate change driven weather is altering the severity and scale of riparian disturbance, often shifting highly impacted streams to a stable degraded state, unable to store water or provide other once inherent ecosystem functions. Beaver restoration has been gaining traction as a way to address long term riparian degradation, yet little has been documented regarding the impact of restored beaver activity on recently burned riparian systems, especially those in a stable degraded state. To address this, my study documented the interactions between largescale wildfire impact, subsequent erosion events and dam building beaver populations in riparian systems of the Methow River watershed, north central Washington (WA), US. I tested the hypothesis that beaver increase the resiliency of streams to wildfire using a fully factorial study comparing stream side riparian vegetation, stream channel morphology, and chemistry of stream reaches across burned vs. not burned sites with and without hydrologically significant beaver dams. My study was conducted June through November of 2018 in sub-basins of the Methow River watershed. I found reduced stream nutrient transport and pH, increased stream channel and floodplain connectivity, increased vegetation diversity in floodplain landforms, and reduced non-native species in burned riparian systems with beaver, which suggest that beaver can effectively increase wildfire resilience in streams. By studying the interacting variables of fire, stream channel erosion, water chemistry, riparian vegetation and beaver activity in degraded stream systems, more effective and holistic approaches to adaptive ecological and economic management will emerge, particularly in the face of increasing riparian disturbance from large scale wildfire--Pages iii-iv.

Their activities can quickly and drastically alter habitat properties and perhaps permit highly aggressive colonizing plants, notably non-native species, to invade and potentially dominate. This study examined if beavers in southeastern Georgia have an effect on the terrestrial plant community. Sampling areas included beaver modified (N=9) and nearby but relatively non-impacted riparian habitat (N=9) in a matched pairs design. Vegetation surveys were performed in spring and summer. Species richness was calculated for herbs, vines, woody seedlings, and woody vegetation. Richness of herbaceous vegetation was higher at distances closer to shore while richness of large woody vegetation increased with distance from shore. Woody vegetation also was more abundant in beaver sites. Composition was not different between the two site types. The presence of exotic species was rare and did not differ by site type. This study provides evidence that beavers may play an important role in determining the vegetative structure of their community.
