Book excerpt: Self-regulation, an increasingly focus of social-emotional learning curriculums for over twenty years according to Zimmerman (2008), provides students with the ability of "setting goals, selecting strategies, and self-monitoring their effectiveness" as opposed to waiting for others to redirect their behavior (pages 166). Prekindergarten students who have documented strengths in social-emotional learning, and particularly self-regulation, have a greater chance at demonstrating academic readiness at the kindergarten level (Ashdown and Bernard, 2015). On the contrary, if students do not strengthen these social-emotional learning skills by the age of 8, a potential of long-term academic weaknesses exists (Aksoy, 2019).Prekindergarten options such as the State of Florida Voluntary Prekindergarten Program, strive to provide enriching methodologies for students at four years of age with aspirations of strong social-emotional skills and academic success in kindergarten. The most recent readiness results, from the 2018 school year, from the State of Florida indicate 58% of students demonstrated proficiency, meaning 42% of students were not ready for kindergarten during the 2019 school year (Nickerson, 2019). This result is an increase from 36% not being proficient in the 2018 school year (Postal, 2019). The purpose of this study was to better understand if an increased focus on social-emotional development at the prekindergarten level would increase a prekindergarten student's academic readiness in the form of print knowledge, phonological awareness, and oral language. In addition, the study researched the relationship between this social-emotional learning program and the number of verbal and physical aggressions for prekindergarten students. The leadership team for the school featured in this study researched several commercial programs dedicated to social-emotional learning and selected the Incredible Years Dinosaur School as the primary means for teaching social-emotional skills during the school years of 2020-2021. I conducted a descriptive study using ANOVA to compare academic reading scores of prekindergarten students at the school between the years of 2019-2020 (control group) and 2020-2021 (treatment group) using the results of the State of Florida Voluntary Prekindergarten Assessment for Assessment Period 1 administered within the first 30-days of each school year and Assessment Period 3 which occurred 30-days prior to the ending of both school years. I calculated the number of incidents of verbal and physical aggression using student behavioral incident forms to provide further data regarding the outcome. An additional analysis examined the role gender and age play in the success of students in both groups for the areas of literacy. This study finds that the students who participated in the Incredible Years Dinosaur School demonstrated growth in oral language skills with a decrease in both verbal and physical aggression occurrences. In addition, further analysis of age data between the control and treatment group indicated students from the younger cohort group (those who turned five years of age from February 1st 2021-August 31st 2021) demonstrated more success with pre-reading skills than those from the older group (those who turned five years of age from September 2, 2020-January 31, 2021. On the contrary, however, the results showed that the addition of the Incredible Years Dinosaur School at the school had no effect on the students' print knowledge or phonological awareness levels. While the school found the implementation of Incredible Years Dinosaur School strengthened students' social-emotional skills as measured by student behavioral data, the prekindergarten program at Country Wide School should research and employ supplemental reading curriculums for students to develop levels of print knowledge and phonological awareness. Oral Language, however, can be increased from such social-emotional learning programs as these programs typically provide modeling and an enhanced exposure to vocabulary. Prekindergarten programs should review the information presented in this study as well as examine the data from their own facilities to gauge whether additional time allotted to social-emotional learning possibly would be of benefit.

Book excerpt: This qualitative research study examined the perceptions of preschool Early Intervention special education teachers about the impacts of social and emotional development on academic and functional success for 3 to 5 year old children with disabilities. In addition, the study identified social and emotional instructional practices used by those teachers to promote academic and functional success for 3-5 year old children with disabilities. The research was conducted with 62 preschool Early Intervention teachers from four Intermediate Units in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Nine of those teachers also volunteered to participate in a one on one interview with the researcher. A researcher developed online survey and interview questions were used to collect data for the study. The results of the study indicated that most of the teachers believed that their students' social and emotional development is essential for both functional and academic success. Almost all of the teachers thought that it was important to use specific instructional strategies to teach social and emotional learning (SEL). Some of the preschool Early Intervention teachers were very invested in implementing SEL curriculum and using specific strategies to teach SEL; however only about half of the teachers were using an SEL Curriculum and just two-thirds were using specific instructional strategies to teach SEL.

Students can become more resilient through social and emotional learning (SEL) in the classroom. SEL teaches children to identify the emotions of themselves and others, to communicate their emotions in a nonviolent way, and to be good friends. By teaching SEL at a young age, teachers can help children become more adept as they make friends and learn how to interact in social situations, thus bolstering their relationships with friends and adults. Improved social and emotional skills help students succeed in academics and with their peers as they form social connections. Strong Start Pre-K, a social and emotional learning curriculum, was evaluated in a local preschool program. Using a nonequivalent control group design, two preschool teachers taught the curriculum in their classrooms, and a third classroom was the control. Both before and after the implementation of the curriculum, data were gathered from classroom teachers on their students' emotional regulation, internalizing behaviors, and the teachers' perceived relationships with their students. Results indicated a slight increase in emotional regulation and a significant decrease in internalizing behaviors in the treatment groups. Student-teacher relationships improved, specifically with a decrease on the subscale of Conflict. Treatment fidelity indicated that teachers were able to implement most or all of the components of each lesson 90% of the time. Social validity measurements indicated that the teachers would recommend the curriculum to other educators.

Research demonstrates a decreased emphasis on social-emotional skill development in preschool, despite high incidences of problem behaviors. The present study investigated the effectiveness of a commercially available social skills curriculum on preschoolers' social-emotional development, specifically their pro-social behaviors and emotion recognition. Results showed that students who participated in the social skills curriculum increased prosocial skills and ability to visually recognize emotions in others. While statistical measures indicate that the intervention did not have a statistically significant impact on student emotion recognition and prosocial behavior, anecdotal reports from participating teachers indicated that the intervention was highly beneficial to participating students. Further, the curriculum had a high level of treatment acceptability by participants' teachers. Implications regarding social emotional curriculum and preschool students' prosocial skill and emotion recognition development are provided.

The results add to the research on social-emotional education by studying a lesser-studied population of students not deemed as at-risk. Preschool programs are encouraged to instill social-emotional education programs.

Using state guidelines, Preschool Learning Foundations, assessment measures, and program implementation goals specific to the pre-school population, the Second Step program can be expanded to address cultural differences, curriculum for RTI tier one and two populations, and students in special education. The prepared project is a three-hour training workshop with a facilitator0́9s guide, slides, and presenter's notes. Any school psychologist or educational professional can train a target audience of school psychologists and educators working in schools. Workshop participants will obtain knowledge about science-based prevention programs, with a specific focus on programs that promote the development of social and emotional skills in preschoolers.
