Book excerpt: In the modern commercial era, companies and their managers are subjected to well publicized pressure to play an increasingly active role in society - so called "Corporate social responsibility". It has been argued that an element in this development is simply enlightened self-interest in that social responsibility enhances corporate image and financial performance. To date the evidence to support this thesis derives from North America. Outside this continent evidence for any relationship is sparse. This study will initially attempt to define the concept of corporate social responsibility and to examine its guiding principles. Subsequently, the available empirical research into the link between corporate social responsibility and economic performance will be evaluated this study examines different impacts of positive and negative CSR activities on financial performance of hotel, restaurant and airline companies, theoretically based on positivist and negativity effects. Findings suggest mixed results across different industries and will contribute to companies' appropriate strategic decision-making for CSR activities by providing more precise information regarding the impacts of each directional CSR activity on financial performance.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 2,0, University of Augsburg, language: English, abstract: This essay is concerned with the empirical question whether Corporate Social Responsibility of Multinational Companies has an impact on its financial performance. Currently, the widely spread debate about the importance of responsible and sustainable behavior of firms leads to different positions in the business world and requires explicit generally excepted answers. The multitude of already existing studies shows that it is almost impossible to find one commonly accepted definition and one perfectly fitting level of CSR. This study works out two widely accepted measures of CSR and its relation to financial performance in the context of a company ́s reputation. The results of these studies show that a positive relation between social and environmental awareness and the accounting-based financial performance of a company do in fact exist. By using data from already analyzed meta-studies, the phenomenon can be explained by the importance of reputation in today ́s business world.

Book excerpt: The core idea of corporate social responsibility, the notion that companies have a responsibility beyond legal requirements, is by now deeply embedded in the corporate cultures of the largest U.S. companies. The authors suggest that productive debate now focuses on the following two issues. First, what are the impacts of existing corporate social responsibility programs for the corporation? And, second, what constitutes the precise contours of this responsibility? This book explores these two themes. The issue of how corporate social responsibility affects individual companies engaged in socially responsible activities is not well understood. Further, the distinction between legitimate and illegitimate corporate social responsibility activities has not always been clearly drawn. This book, therefore, is designed to fill in some of the gaps in our understanding. This is done by carefully organizing and reviewing the relevant and growing literature on corporate social responsibility. In addition, this book reports on the results of two original empirical studies designed to further explore the relationship between corporate social responsibility and traditional financial performance. This book has profound implications for business executives and researchers in finance, accounting, business ethics, and business and society.

Book excerpt: There has been long debate about the effects of corporate social responsibility and its impact on corporate financial performance. This study looks to analyse the effects of companies that change their level of corporate social responsibility level and the resulting change in financial performance. This study goes one step further by then dividing the corporate social responsibility measure into its six components and looks to analyse each of their individual impacts on financial performance. This study shows that changes in the level of CSR results in an increase in company return on equity and a decrease in total revenues. The results then show that the increase in return on equity is primarily driven by the diversity factor, implying that increases in diversity ratings result in increases in ROE. The negative correlation of CSR and revenue is primarily driven by employee relations and environmental scores. This implies that employee relations and environmental CSR scores have negative impacts on firm financial performance. The results of this study are important value additions to the ongoing debate and prove that corporate social responsibility can increase firm financial performance if it is invested in the right places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively describes social responsibility and sustainable development, with contributions from scientists and representatives from industry working in the field. The papers are innovative, cross-cutting and many share practice-based experiences, some of which may be replicable elsewhere. Prepared by the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and the World Sustainable Development Research and Transfer Centre (WSD-RTC), it reiterates the current need to promote social responsibility. Social responsibility and sustainable development are two different concepts, whose integration over the years has led to significant advances in the way enterprises see and perceive their operations. It is not only about policies or steps taken to meet legal requirements, but is also about social equality and environmental accountability, also bearing in mind the links with eco-efficiency, innovation, and the health and wellbeing of workers. According to ISO 26000, social responsibility is the responsibility of an organisation for the impacts of its decisions and activities on society and the environment, through transparent and ethical behaviour that: a) contributes to sustainable development, including health and the welfare of society b) takes into account the expectations of stakeholders c) is in compliance with applicable law and consistent with international norms of behaviour d) is integrated throughout the organisation and practised in its relationships. But even though the relations between social responsibility and sustainability are strong, it is still necessary to encourage organisations to adhere to, or at least follow the principles of sustainable development in their operations, giving something back to the community. As such, there is a need for a better understanding of how social responsibility is related to sustainable development, and of the identification of processes, methods and tools that may help the integration of these two important elements. There is also a real need to showcase successful examples of how to structure behaviour and institutional practice in line with the sustainability challenges we face today. Book excerpt: If Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities are beyond a firm's legal obligations and potentially require a sacrifice in short-term profits, why do firms promote CSR? This question motivates this investigation of the impact of CSR on a firm's Corporate Financial Performance (CFP). This relationship is examined for the period from 2004 to 2013 in South Africa. We assess the short-term impact of CSR announcements on financial returns of firms included in or excluded from the Johannesburg Securities Exchange Socially Responsible Investment Index and determine whether there is a difference in the long-term CFP between these two groups for the entire period. The event study methodology shows that investors were rewarded in 2004 and 2012, when firms entered the index, and were penalized in 2013, when firms exited the index. When using regression analysis, the various industries provide mixed results between CSR and CFP for firms over the long term. Based on these results, we find that CSR activities lead to no significant differences in financial performance.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present selected theoretical and practical aspects of corporate social responsibility and sustainability, with particular emphasis on the journey (transition) from values to impact. Values play an important role in business world and they shape the responsible approach of organizations. However, pressing and still unresolved challenges of the present day show evidently that there exist significant discrepancies between organizations declarations on values and their real impact. COVID-19 pandemic, Globalization 4.0, climate catastrophe and challenges emphasized by SDGs, constitute the new environment that contemporary organizations face. In effect business is part of the problem and a solution as well. It is necessary to quickly and effectively push for action taking into account the power of responsible business to co-create human live and environment. Both the theoretical considerations and the practice-based studies presented in this monograph make a significant contribution to the theory and practice of management. The book is an extension and enrichment of the existing knowledge in the field of socially responsible management in organizations. Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability will be of value to academics, researchers and advanced students in the fields of business and management, especially those interest in the intersection of management and CSR and sustainability, and those focusing the impact that business activities have on the environment.

Book excerpt: Over the last three decades, the pressure on firms to engage in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities and establish themselves as highly socially responsible companies has increased. However, on the issue of incentive, some corporations view CSR activities as simply a costly hindrance and some companies use CSR methodologies as a strategic tactic to obtain public support for their presence in global markets which could help companies to sustain a competitive advantage by using their social contributions. Researchers around the world have reported a positive, negative, mixed and neutral impacts of corporate social responsibility on corporate financial performance (CFP). On this background, this study aimed at summarizing the findings of major empirical studies and drawing the conceptual framework to investigate the relationship between CSR and CFP.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: B, , course: Executive MBA, language: English, abstract: The thesis investigated the effect of Corporate Social Responsibility on sustainable business in Uganda taking a case of the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). It is derived from the fact that many organizations are seeking better ways of increasing their efficiency and effectiveness in order to remain competitive. Various ways have been advanced and one that is steadily gaining popularity today is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The objectives of the work included to examine the contribution of CSR initiatives on overall business sustainability, to establish whether staff of URA have knowledge about CSR and whether URA derives benefits from CSR. Data was collected from a sample of 62 randomly selected respondents using a structured questionnaire and by in-depth key informant interviews; all in Kampala, Uganda. Their views were also used as a basis for soliciting recommendations on the best ways of improving CSR not only in URA but also other corporations. A socially responsible company should supersede its main objective of maximizing its shareholders’ wealth. It extends its mandate by undertaking social and environmental activities in society within which it carries out its operations through initiatives such as environment conservation, improving the quality of life of its employees and society in general and also being transparent in its business operations. More stakeholders are being drawn towards socially responsible companies because of these initiatives. As organizations struggle to remain competitive within their respective industries while at the same time addressing their long term corporate objectives, they need to be able to incorporate certain values and initiatives of corporate social responsibility into their strategic objectives if they are to further gain competitive advantage. A lot of debate has gone on about whether a company’s social image contributes to its attainment of corporate objectives. The work therefore sought to establish whether CSR has an effect on business operations and performance.
