However, the helmet has recently become a mounting platform for devices such as night-vision goggles, drop down displays, weapon-aiming systems, etc. Although designed to enhance soldier performance, these systems increase the mass of the helmet and typically shift the position of the helmet's center of mass forward. The effects of changing the mass properties of the helmet on head and neck forces and moment on neck muscle activity and fatigue are well documented for aviators and soldiers in vehicles. No research to date has been focused on the effects of helmets of varying mass and mass distribution on head and neck forces and moments during a combat foot soldier's physical activities. Physical demands on the combat foot soldier are substantially different from those on aviator or soldiers in vehicles. Therefore, changing the mass properties of the helmet likely has different effects on combat foot soldiers than on aviators. The study answers the militarily relevant question of what forces and moments on the head and neck are associated with currently used Army helmets and night vision goggles during combat physical activities of the ground soldier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Army ballistic helmet manufacturing has not changed significantly in nearly 30 years. Advances in U.S. helmet technology have been largely in shell design, improved aramid fibers, and helmet liner and suspension systems. The Army is currently replacing its first composite ballistic helmet, Personnel Armor System Ground Troops (PASGT), with the Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH). ACH has undergone ballistic testing and system analysis with improvements to weapons and body armor interfacing issues. Still, ACH uses some of the same materials (butyl rubber toughened phenolic resin with aramid fabric reinforcements) and the same process technology as its 30 year old PASGT predecessor. The current research effort has focused on identifying and resolving technology barriers that limit a new and improved generation of ballistic materials from being considered for use in future helmet systems. Both historical and contemporary perspectives of ballistic helmet technology are provided as rationale for the development of alternative helmet materials and their associated processes. The primary technology barriers are four-fold: structural durability (static and dynamic deformation), contiguous preform construction (less cutting of the reinforcement without wrinkling), hybridization of dissimilar fibers and resins, and low cost manufacturing (rapid heating, consolidation, and cooling of tools and parts). Flat plates and full helmet shells were molded to quantify the performance and benefits of hybridized materials to meet current and future demands for increased ballistic mass efficiency.

Various polymer materials in the form of fibre- reinforced organic matrix composites have been shown to have sufficient resistance to ballistic impact to be regarded as attractive construction materials for personnel protective helmets. This report discusses the relative ballistic properties of those organic matrix composite materials which are considered as prime candidates to meet the requirements of the Army's new combat and vehicle crewman helmets.

Book excerpt: Hardback, 328 pages, Color Cover, BW interior From the book: One hundred and fifty years after the fall of civilization, the members of the Morrow Project wake to a changed world. Without the modern transit and communications infrastructures, distances that once took hours, now take weeks, and news that once traveled in milliseconds now takes months to arrive, if ever. This new world is characterized by tiny hamlets of simple daily existence awash in a sea of barbarism and anarchy. The Morrow Project could not prevent the coming catastrophe, nor did they have the resources to help everyone immediately. It was possible to help with the rebuilding, but even this was a massive undertaking. Plan became action and over the years many well-trained teams were cryogenically frozen in hidden bunkers to emerge at the time when their resources and help could do the most good. Intended to be part of an organized plan to rebuild America, your team finds that they have missed the 3-5 year expected wake-up call. Now, far outside the original time frame and unable to contact the rest of the project, they must start alone the process that was intended for thousands. Isolated in a world where the war is only a distant legend, your team must rely on their ingenuity, training and each other to carry out the general orders of the project: 1. Assist the population in rebuilding America whenever possible. 2. Reunite with the bulk of the Morrow Project forces. 3. Survive! The Morrow Project may be played with nothing other than this book, dice, paper and pencil. Included in this book are full details on Morrow Project teams, vehicles, equipment, modern weapons, complete medical details, people and creatures living in the post-holocaust world, and more.

Book excerpt: The Fourth Conference on Fibrous Composites in Structural Design was a successor to the First-to-Third Conferences on Fibrous Composites in Flight Vehicle Design sponsored by the Air Force (First and Second Conferences, September 1973 and May 1974) and by NASA (Third Conference, November 1975) which were aimed at focusing national attention on flight vehicle applications of a new class of fiber reinforced materials, the advanced com posites, which afforded weight savings and other advantages which had not been previously available. The Fourth Conference, held at San Diego, California, 14-17 November 1978, was the fi rst of these conferences to be jointly sponsored by the Army, Navy and Ai r Force together with NASA, as well as being the first to give attention to non-aerospace applications of fiber reinforced composites. While the design technology for aerospace applications has reached a state of relative maturity, other areas of application such as mi litary bridging, flywheel energy storage systems, ship and surface vessel components and ground vehicle components are in an early stage of development, and it was an important objective to pinpoint where careful attention to structural design was needed in such applications to achfeve maximum structural performance payoff together with a high level of reliability and attractive economics.
