Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does terrorism influence risk perceptions of tourists? How are the resulting travel behaviours and attitudes altered due to this relation? The purpose of this thesis was to examine how the impacts of safety and security issues in the MENA region, and Egypt in particular, influence tourists' decision-making processes in consideration of destination risk perception and uncertainty in travel decision-making. The present paper is the first to focus on Egypt, a country that is one of the main destinations for German holiday-makers within the MENA region. Besides the literature review on the key concepts of this study, the research adopted a quantitative approach based on an online survey that was designed to identify risk perceptions of German tourists towards the MENA region and Egypt, their attitudes and behaviours and factors influencing those such as socio-demographics, political unrest within the region in general (spill-over effect) and past travel experience (PTE). Possible preventive measures and their effectiveness as risk reduction strategies were also part of the survey. It was found that Egypt is generally perceived as an unsafe destination to travel to, however, those respondents with PTE rate the country's attractiveness higher and are thus more likely to revisit as well. Spill-over effect was found to be significant, as well as the influence of several socio-demographic factors. Risk reduction strategies were generally rated to be effective and could therefore have implications for DMOs to create a more appealing image of Egypt as a holiday destination.

Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Psychology - Miscellaneous, grade: B, University of Stavanger, language: English, abstract: The discussion topic “What has research shown about the effects of terrorism and other dramatic events on subjective risk judgments, worries and travel desire?” is a question of tourism social psychology. As terrorism is a threat for every individual issue, so it has a massive impact on tourism society. Again worry is a combination of fear and anxiety, therefore because of terrorist attacks and other dramatic events tourist minds become worried about safety. The tourists may start to consider about the risk factors of travelling to a particular destination and thus the willingness of touring might be affected too. By the support and assistance of the current researches, I would like to define the key terms. Then I would like to describe what the current researches have shown about the impact of terrorism and other dramatic events on subjective risk judgments, worries and travel desire.

Book excerpt: News Framing Effects is a guide to framing effects theory, one of the most prominent theories in media and communication science. Rooted in both psychology and sociology, framing effects theory describes the ability of news media to influence people’s attitudes and behaviors by subtle changes to how they report on an issue. The book gives expert commentary on this complex theoretical notion alongside practical instruction on how to apply it to research. The book’s structure mirrors the steps a scholar might take to design a framing study. The first chapter establishes a working definition of news framing effects theory. The following chapters focus on how to identify the independent variable (i.e., the "news frame") and the dependent variable (i.e., the "framing effect"). The book then considers the potential limits or enhancements of the proposed effects (i.e., the "moderators") and how framing effects might emerge (i.e., the "mediators"). Finally, it asks how strong these effects are likely to be. The final chapter considers news framing research in the light of a rapidly and fundamentally changing news and information market, in which technologies, platforms, and changing consumption patterns are forcing assumptions at the core of framing effects theory to be re-evaluated.

Book excerpt: The Oklahoma City bombing, intentional crashing of airliners on September 11, 2001, and anthrax attacks in the fall of 2001 have made Americans acutely aware of the impacts of terrorism. These events and continued threats of terrorism have raised questions about the impact on the psychological health of the nation and how well the public health infrastructure is able to meet the psychological needs that will likely result. Preparing for the Psychological Consequences of Terrorism highlights some of the critical issues in responding to the psychological needs that result from terrorism and provides possible options for intervention. The committee offers an example for a public health strategy that may serve as a base from which plans to prevent and respond to the psychological consequences of a variety of terrorism events can be formulated. The report includes recommendations for the training and education of service providers, ensuring appropriate guidelines for the protection of service providers, and developing public health surveillance for preevent, event, and postevent factors related to psychological consequences.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to find out changes in international tourists' risk perception towards Tunisia during the period from 2010 to 2015. Content analysis was employed to analyze posts of (potential) tourists in TripAdvisor forum. The findings showed tourists mostly heightened awareness during the time of the Arab Spring Revolution & the three terrorist attacks in 2015, and only during the first month after an incident. Terrorism-related risk received higher attention than political risk did. Risk perception of tourists towards terrorism and political instability in term of travelling to Tunisia was also revealed. The study emphasized the role of social media in influencing and reflecting tourists' risk perception. The influence of government issued travel advisories on tourist's risk perception and decision to visit was marked. Practical implication of the study is the suggestions for the Tunisian government and DMOs to mitigate negative impact on tourism industry.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 2.1, University of Plymouth (Cornwall College Newquay (in partnership with UoP)), course: Marine Sports Science (BSc Hons), language: English, abstract: The tourism industry has significant repercussions in regards to economic value to destinations worldwide but is susceptible to external shocks such as terrorism as tourist numbers follow terroristic activity causing economic damage to destinations beyond managerial control. Surf tourism is of growing economic, social and environmental value to destinations in Indonesia due to the region’s abundance of high quality waves and resulting attractiveness to surfers however, it is a region frequented by terrorist activity. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of terrorism on commercial surf tourism as a sub segment of the global tourism industry. Data was obtained using a survey consisting of 5 closed ended questions assessing IAO variables of traveling surfers regarding the perception of terrorism as a risk influencing destination choice and travel plans. 42 usable responses were collected over a three-month period from January 7th to March 28th 2016. Results of the statistical analysis suggest that surfers demonstrate a different behaviour in comparison to other tourists and have a low perception of terrorism as a risk influencing destination choice. In fact, from the data and statistical analysis it appears that the significant reliance on the quality of waves at a destination outweighs the risk of terrorism as an influence on destination choice, therefore accepting the tested hypothesis, which stated that surf tourists do not perceive terrorism as a high risk influencing destination choice or travel plans. Suggestions for future research include a replication of this study using a larger sample size and changes to the design of the questionnaire in order to improve upon limitations and further investigate conspicuous findings of this study as well as potential links to the field of behavioural psychology.
