Book excerpt: College student retention rates are an oft-studied phenomenon, and much is known about how the characteristics of students and those of the institutions where they attend impact these rates. However, improving the retention rates of college students remains an elusive goal of faculty and administrators in higher education. Validation theory (Rendon, 1994; Rendon-Linares & Munoz, 2011) has shown potential as a theoretical framework to help understand how the validation of college students by faculty and other agents of the institution can lead to better college experiences, improved academic outcomes, and higher retention rates for this population. Previously, the research on faculty validation of students focused primarily on the views of students towards their instructors and not those of instructors towards their students; this research study surveyed faculty from a major research university in the Northeast to quantify the attitudes of faculty towards validation of students. An online survey instrument was created to measure faculty attitudes towards the validation of their students, and will help future research about validation theory. A Principal components factor analysis conducted on the results of the study indicated eight components that comprised the faculty attitudes about student validation. Additionally, these eight components were analyzed by faculty and institutional characteristics, and there were some statistically significant main effects for some of these characteristics. Implications for enhancing the understanding of validation theory, and future practice and research are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine faculty and student perceptions of what factors are contributing to drop-out rates in a Northern Indiana higher educational facility and to study whether or not the drop-out prevention programs that are in place are effective. Survey links were sent out to all adjuncts and some full-time faculty at a local community college. Survey links were also sent out to academic skills advancement students. Results indicated that faculty members are fulfilling their duties as instructors of higher educational facility and are willing to help those students who are in need of support. Results from the first t-test also indicated a disparity in the level to which students and faculty feel that the New Student Orientation is impacting student success as well as a lapse in the quality of academic advisory. Descriptive results indicated that both faculty and students agree that a computer literacy program should be implemented. Based on the results, educators believe that a review of academic advisory plans and an implementation of a computer literacy course along with the current New Student Orientation course must be a mandatory part of a student's academic plan within their first year as a new student. These qualitative and quantitative results provide insight into the impact of retention programs. Appended are: (1) Faculty Survey; and (2) Student Survey. (Contains 16 tables.).

Book excerpt: College student attrition from STEM majors most often occurs in the first or second year of college (Seymour & Hewitt, 1997). Empirical studies have also suggested that the quality of instruction and classroom climate are contributing factors to student retention, emotional well-being, and academic achievement (Strenta, Elliott, Adair, & Matier, 1994). This exploratory research employed a grounded theory approach to explore how community college science faculty members identify students at risk of failing in science courses and their use of instructional strategies to support academic persistence. This study took place within two northeast public community college system all of which have open enrollment policies. The participants for this exploratory research included tenured, non tenured, tenure-track, or adjunct faculty members in the science disciplines. Data for this study were collected using individual open ended, semi-structured interviews of community college science faculty members. The data were analyzed and coded using qualitative descriptive methods to produce a rich description. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations for practice and future research are presented. The overall findings from the interviews revealed the participants in this study focused mainly on the lack of engagement when describing a student that may be academically at risk. When the concept of engagement was further examined it was found that community college science faculty members assign responsibility for engagement. The assigning of responsibility became the core category of this study, which focused on who the faculty members feel are responsible for engaging with learning. The findings from this study show that the participants explicitly stayed in one of two clusters throughout the analysis of this study. Participants in Cluster 1 reported using student-centered instructional strategies or changing their instructional strategies from content-centered to student-centered in response to a lack of student engagement in the classroom. Cluster 1 also reported they recognize students academically at risk immediately at the start of the semester, proactively intervene with these students, and focus on student engagement and attitudes toward learning when assessing the influence of their support. Cluster 2 reported using content-centered instructional strategies and did not change their strategies in response to a lack of student engagement in the classroom. Participants in Cluster 2 also reported recognizing students academically at risk later in the semester, reactively intervening with these students, and relying on student grades when assessing the influence of their support.

Book excerpt: The general purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between selected demographics and community college faculty attitudes toward distance learning. Other interest included faculty development in distance learning. The population for this study was faculty members from three Maryland community colleges, one rural, one suburban and one urban. This descriptive study utilized both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A survey instrument and semi-structured interviews were used as a means for collecting data. The survey and interview data were used to compare perceptions among varying levels of faculty based on age, gender, educational level, and years of service. The findings provided insight into faculty views about distance learning training at their own institutions. The research study was designed utilizing Gaff's (1975) conceptual framework for staff development in education, which included motivational and attitudinal variables that affected faculty effectiveness. Attitude theory as discussed by several theorists including Eagly, Chaiken, Rokeach, and Maultsby, were theoretical perspectives used to explain and interpret the fact that attitudes made actions as well as ideas instantly feel right or wrong without conscious analysis. The major finding from this study suggested that male faculty had more positive attitudes toward distance learning than female faculty. The three key factors for faculty participation in distance learning were found to be training, extra pay and extra time. Implications for faculty development were identified as a result of the study's findings. -- Abstract.
