Book Synopsis Liberalization, Productivity, and Competition by : Vivek Srivastava
Download or read book Liberalization, Productivity, and Competition written by Vivek Srivastava and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The empirical evidence linking economic reform in developing countries with gains in productivity and efficiency is both limited and inconclusive. Using large firm-level data collected by the Reserve Bank of India, this book examines the impact of reform on productivity and competition for the Indian manufacturing sector in the eighties. Relying on econometric estimates of pre- and post-reform productivity growth, the study finds evidence of significantly higher productivity growth rates after the mid-eighties both at the aggregate and two-digit sector levels. The author seeks corroborating evidence by developing a framework that enables him to simultaneously estimate economies of scale, a measure of optimal labour utilization and the mark-up of price over marginal cost as an indicator of competitiveness. Though he finds evidence of better labour utilization, there is no indication of reduced market power or any significant departure from constant returns to scale in the post-reform period. He concludes that even the limited reforms of the eighties led to productivity gains which were achieved largely through better resource use.

Book Synopsis J-Curve of Productivity and Growth by : Mr.Arvind Virmani
Download or read book J-Curve of Productivity and Growth written by Mr.Arvind Virmani and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most estimates of Indian manufacturing productivity find a slowdown in the 1990s. This has puzzled analysts, given that 1990s reforms were deeper and wider than the 1980s reforms that raised the growth rate of the Indian economy by 2 per cent points. This paper tests the hypothesis of the J curve of Productivity and Growth following major liberalization and finds it to be broadly supported by the data: Technological obsolescence, gradual adoption of new technology and learning by doing result in negative effects on measured productivity.
Book Synopsis Trade Reforms and Performance in Indian Manufacturing by : Homagni Choudhury
Download or read book Trade Reforms and Performance in Indian Manufacturing written by Homagni Choudhury and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the impact of trade policy reforms (TPR) in India on aspects of economic performance of the organized manufacturing sector. Using econometric techniques on panel data for a sample of 72 three-digit industries (regrouped to form 45 industries), the study finds some evidence of a positive impact of TPR on wage inequality, labour productivity growth and employment growth. The study also uses a Value-Added approach as well as a Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) approach to conclude that the comparative advantage of India in the organized manufacturing sector has not changed over the reforms period implying the existence of structural bottlenecks and domestic policy induced rigidities standing as impediments to resource reallocation.

This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, we attempt to identify the channels through which economic reforms enhanced the productivity growth in total manufacturing sector in India. Because one possible channel is better utilization of plant capacity, we estimate capacity utilization rate in Indian manufacturing. Empirical estimates show that the annual average capacity utilization rate in Indian manufacturing was lower over the post-reform years. However, after the reforms capacity utilization rate grew faster at the all India level as well as for most of the major industrial states. Subsequent regression analysis confirms that there was evidence of a favorable impact of economic reforms on productivity growth in total manufacturing, beyond the positive impact of improved capacity utilization.

This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the late 1970s, the Indian authorities implemented a series of reforms aimed at exposing the economy to greater competition and at liberalizing key aspects of economic activity. This paper compares productivity trends in Indian Manufacturing sector, pre and post reforms years. Using the data from Annual Survey of Industries, the entire study period (1973-74 to 2004-05) is divided into two sub-periods: pre-reform period, i.e. 1973-74 to 1990-91, and post-reform period, i.e. 1991-92 to 2004-05. Using the Malmquist Productivity Index to measure Total factor Productivity growth in Indian Manufacturing, the results show that liberalization has had a negative impact on the productivity of the Indian Manufacturing sector at aggregate as well as disaggregate level.

This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the late 1970s, the Indian authorities implemented a series of reforms aimed at exposing the economy to greater competition and at liberalizing key aspects of economic activity. This paper investigates productivity trends in India's (registered) manufacturing sectors during the 1980s and 1990s. The main findings of the paper are (i) labor and total factor productivity (TFP) growth in total manufacturing and many of the component sectors since 1980 were markedly higher than that in the preceding two decades, although the extent of the acceleration in TFP growth depends critically on the underlying assumptions about factor elasticities and the assumed structure of the production function; (ii) productivity growth for total manufacturing as well as for many subsectors picked up further after the 1991 reforms; and (iii) classification of the best performing sectors and the weakest performing sectors, based on comparative TFP, remains robust to changes in underlying assumptions.

Book Synopsis From “Hindu Growth” to Productivity Surge by : Mr.Dani Rodrik
Download or read book From “Hindu Growth” to Productivity Surge written by Mr.Dani Rodrik and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores the causes of India's productivity surge around 1980, more than a decade before serious economic reforms were initiated. Trade liberalization, expansionary demand, a favorable external environment, and improved agricultural performance did not play a role. We find evidence that the trigger may have been an attitudinal shift by the government in the early 1980s that unlike the reforms of the 1990s, was probusiness rather than promarket in character, favoring the interests of existing businesses rather than new entrants or consumers. A relatively small shift elicited a large productivity response, because India was far away from its income-possibility frontier. Registered manufacturing, which had been built up in previous decades, played an important role in determining which states took advantage of the changed environment.

Book Synopsis Indian Manufacturing by : Devashish Mitra
Download or read book Indian Manufacturing written by Devashish Mitra and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the determinants of productivity in Indian manufacturing industries during the period 1988-2000. Using two-digit industry level data for the Indian states, we find evidence of imperfect interindustry and interstate labor mobility as well as misallocation of resources across industries and states. Trade liberalization increases productivity in all industries across all states, and productivity is higher in the less protected industries. These effects of protection and trade liberalization are more pronounced in states that have relatively more flexible labor markets. Similar effects are also found in the case of employment, capital stock and investment. Furthermore, labor market flexibility, independent of other policies, has a positive effect on productivity. Importantly, per capita state development expenditure seems to be the strongest and the most robust predictor of productivity, employment, capital stock and investment. Industrial delicensing increases both labor productivity and employment but only in the states with flexible labor market institutions. Even after controlling for delicensing, the analysis shows that trade liberalization has a productivity-enhancing effect. Finally, trade liberalization benefits most the export-oriented industries located in states with flexible labor-market institutions.
Book Synopsis Indian Economy: Reforms and Development by : Pradip Kumar Biswas
Download or read book Indian Economy: Reforms and Development written by Pradip Kumar Biswas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a comprehensive study of the impact of policy reforms on output, employment, and productivity growth across sectors of India since 1991. It showcases varied responses from different sectors as they faced different degrees of policy interventions, and challenges or opportunities as regards markets, technology, and availability of skills and other complementary resources. The book also discusses the contributions of the service sector on India’s GDP and employment. The book throws light on the phenomena of rising inequality and persistent poverty which continues to shadow and be a hallmark of post-reform India, despite high economic growth. It underlines the failure of these reforms to bring about major change in social and economic organizations and institutions. The book’s contents stress on the criticality of addressing these issues as they have a serious potential of jeopardizing the country’s ability to maintain high growth momentum. With these pertinent topics, the book would be of interest not only to the research community, but also to policy makers and practitioners of various sectors addressed here.
