Book excerpt: [Beta] decay studies of nuclei at the limits of stability are essential in evaluating the physical aspects behind the structural changes, particle configurations and interactions in neutronor proton-rich systems. Isobarically purified beams were used at the Holifeld Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to study the [Beta] decays of 75Cu and 77Cu. Two different experiments were performed. In the first study, only concerning the decay of 77Cu, the 25-MV tandem accelerated ions were time-tagged using a micro-channel plate detector, passed through a six-segment ion chamber, and implanted on the tape of a moving tape collector. The passage through an ion chamber insured the ion identification by energy loss in the six segments. The Low Energy Radioactive Ion Beam Spectroscopy Station consisting of a universal detector support with four Ge clover detectors, two [Beta] detectors and a moving tape collector of 10 gain in beam intensity for both 75Cu and 77Cu. These experiments resulted in considerable information on the previously unknown level structure of 75Zn with some 120 [gamma]-ray transitions placed in a level scheme containing 59 levels including two above the neutron separation energy. We have also identified the previously unknown 1/2- isomeric state at 127 keV. A total of 64 [gamma] rays were placed in a level scheme for 77Zn containing 35 excited states including one state above the neutron separation energy, while two [gamma] rays were observed for the [Beta]n branch to states in 76Zn. The growth and decay curves of some prominent [gamma] rays indicate a single [beta]-decaying state with a half-life of 480(9)ms. The decay pattern for 77Cu, with observed feeding of 8(3)% to the 7/2 77Zng and 6(3)% to the 1/2- 77Znm, in contrast to the large feeding observed for decay of [Pi]p3/2 73Cug to 1/2- 73Zng, strongly suggests a {Pi]5/2 ground state for the studied 77Cu activity. Results will be presented and the prospects for future possible studies will also be discussed.

Book excerpt: This dissertation reports on new information in the [beta minus] decay of the neutron-rich nucleus 81Zn, which populates states in its daughter nucleus 81Ga. This includes new [gamma]-ray transitions in the daughter nucleus, 81Ga, as well as a [beta]-delayed neutron branching ratio. This isotope was produced at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility of Oak Ridge National Laboratory through the Isotope Separation Online technique. They are fission fragments from proton-induced fission on a uranium carbide target. These fission fragments are ionized and both mass and isotopically separated before arriving at the Low Energy Radioactive Ion Beam Spectroscopy Station (LeRIBSS). The [gamma]-ray and [beta] electron emissions from the decays are measured and analyzed in this work. A new [beta]-delayed neutron branching ratio is reported for this decay, which is in agreement with recent theoretical values. The core excited states in the daughter nucleus, 81Ga, populated through allowed Gamow-Teller decays are analyzed. A trend in core excited states with other N=50 isotones indicates an increasing gap between a deeply bound neutron hole and the valence neutron above the N=50 gap upon moving towards doubly magic 78Ni. This dissertation also reports on additions to the decay schemes of 79Zn and 80Zn decays. Their decay level schemes have been expanded upon and an improved picture of the total allowed Gamow-Teller decay strength is known from 79Zn to 81Zn. This work presents an improved, albeit still incomplete, picture of the energy of states populated through Gamow-Teller decays from below to above the N=50 shell gap in zinc isotopes.

Book excerpt: A study of nuclei with few nucleons outside the closed shell provides benchmarks for the nuclear shell model especially in this modern era of physics where exotic doubly magic nuclei can be tested. The subject of this thesis is to experimentally investigate the properties of nuclei near 78Ni and to confront them with the predictions of modern large scale shell model calculations. In this regard, an experiment was performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) to measure excited states in 71−73Ni populated via the beta-decay of 71−73Co. Data collected from this experiment lead to partial level schemes for 71Ni and 73Ni and to improvements of existing level schemes for 70Ni and 72Ni. An objective of this experiment was to investigate the changes in excitation energy of the 5/2− state relative to the 9/2 ground state as well as the search for the 1/2− isomeric state in odd-mass nickel isotopes approaching 78Ni. A second experiment was performed also at the NSCL where a two nucleon removal reaction from 73Cu was used to populate the low lying yrast states in 71Ni. Results from this in-beam experiment aided in constructing the level scheme of 71Ni. Systematics in shell model calculations using realistic interactions for odd mass 69−77Ni reveal a steady increase in energy spacing between the 1/2− level and 9/2 ground state - suggesting an increased role of the g9[subscript /]2 correlations, but an almost constant energy separation between the 5/2− and 1/2− excited states. Using data from the two experiments, the position of the 5/2− state in 71Ni and 73Ni and 1/2− state in 71Ni were identified. The decay of 74[superscript,]76Ni into 74[superscript,]76Cu was also investigated. Low lying states revealed new level schemes which are presented with an interpretation of the position of 1+ states populated via allowed GT transitions. A second project in this thesis is on the design and development of a detector system using a dual micro channel plate configuration. The system was built to detect and measure nanosecond isomers in neutron rich 73−76Cu and 76Zn isotopes. The design of the instrument and preliminary beam and alpha source tests done on the system are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is shown that a precise measurement of the angular correlation coefficient 'a' yields theoretically important information about weak interactions. Different experimental approaches for the determination of this quantity were studied. The comparison between coincidence measurements and a determination and evaluation of the shape of the proton recoil spectrum led to the decision to choose the latter method. Detailed calculations were carried out on the precision to be expected from different types of proton spectrometers. Finally the following arrangement is chosen and its design discussed: A high vacuum tangential beam tube, accessible at both ends, is well suited as decay proton source for a precisely controlled spectrometry. It is planned to use a spherical condenser spectrometer and a specially developed low background detector for the postaccelerated protons. The beam hole at the opposite side of the reactor will be used for insertion of a test source for simulating decay protons to check the ion optical properties, transmission etc. between and during the spectrum measurements. Each nuclear model is introduced and derived in detail. The formalism is then applied to light and medium-heavy nuclei in worked-out examples, and finally the acquired skills are strengthened by a wide selection of exercises, many relating the models to experimental data. Nuclear properties are discussed using particles, holes and quasi-particles. From Nucleons to Nucleus is based on lectures on nuclear physics given by the author, and serves well as a textbook for advanced students. Researchers too will appreciate it as a well-balanced reference to theoretical nuclear physics.

Book excerpt: The principal goals of the study were to articulate the scientific rationale and objectives of the field and then to take a long-term strategic view of U.S. nuclear science in the global context for setting future directions for the field. Nuclear Physics: Exploring the Heart of Matter provides a long-term assessment of an outlook for nuclear physics. The first phase of the report articulates the scientific rationale and objectives of the field, while the second phase provides a global context for the field and its long-term priorities and proposes a framework for progress through 2020 and beyond. In the second phase of the study, also developing a framework for progress through 2020 and beyond, the committee carefully considered the balance between universities and government facilities in terms of research and workforce development and the role of international collaborations in leveraging future investments. Nuclear physics today is a diverse field, encompassing research that spans dimensions from a tiny fraction of the volume of the individual particles (neutrons and protons) in the atomic nucleus to the enormous scales of astrophysical objects in the cosmos. Nuclear Physics: Exploring the Heart of Matter explains the research objectives, which include the desire not only to better understand the nature of matter interacting at the nuclear level, but also to describe the state of the universe that existed at the big bang. This report explains how the universe can now be studied in the most advanced colliding-beam accelerators, where strong forces are the dominant interactions, as well as the nature of neutrinos.
