Book excerpt: Perennial grain crops have been proposed as a sustainable alternative to conventional annual grain crops, since they potentially hold multiple desirable features including increased soil C sequestration and biodiversity, mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHGs), and reduction of water loss and others. These attributes are accomplished by their no-tillage management, longer growing season, and pervasive root systems. Nonetheless, the ramifications of implementing novel perennial grain cropping systems to the atmosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere remains elusive. In this research, comprehensive comparisons were made to enhance current understanding of how annual versus perennial grain cropping differ in soil organic matter (SOM) pools, GHGs emissions, and mycorrhizae (i.e., AMF). Five contrasting cropping systems --fallow, annual-grain, biennial-grain, perennial-grain, and perennial-forage -- were compared with and without N fertilizer addition. A randomized complete block design consisting of four replicates was initiated at sites located in Edmonton and Breton, Alberta, Canada. In addition to the replicate plots, two adjacent 4-ha fields, including annual vs. perennial grain crops, were set up for eddy covariance measurements at the Breton site. By doing so, it was expected that they address a limitation of the chamber measurements with respect to instantaneous and heterogeneous capture, as well as evapotranspiration (ET) comparison. As a result of SOC fractionation, perennial grain crops increased soil C concentration in both transitory and stable pools compared with annual grain compartments, although overall soil C sequestration occurred as a function of N fertilizer, cropping systems, and underlying soil texture. Moreover, substantial CH4 and CO2 uptake were observed in perennial grain cropping system compared with annual grain crops likely due to a shift to favorable GHGs sink conditions such as aeration-moisture balance, photosynthetic activity, and microbial decomposition. However, overall cumulative ET and associated ecosystem-water use efficiency were similar with between the two cropping systems. Lastly, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) community compositions between annual and perennial grain cropping systems exhibited no significant difference, likely due to the genetic similarity of two crops. In addition, the two contrasting study sites had different patterns of AMF alpha and beta diversity, which may be a result of differing inherent soil properties and management legacy effect across field sites. In sum, AMF communities appear to be impervious to annual vs perennial grain crops, rather their most pronounced difference are field site specific. In sum, my research has been conducted for an overall assessment of whether perennial grain crops play a multifunctional role in agroecosystems toward better sustainability.

The group was set up, primarily, as a knowledge- and information-based organisation, to help farm businesses to be more profitable and resilient in the long term. The group has over 100 individual members, from the Bombala, Cooma-Monaro and Snowy River Shires. The Monaro soil carbon project aimed to demonstrate the impact of farm management strategies on the concentration and stock of carbon in soil over a two year period. Eight different land-use systems were identified by members of the Monaro Farming Systems group. The practices of interest included liming, nutrient management, introduced perennial pastures and minimum disturbance cropping. In addition the project looked at increases in biomass production within the context of reducing DSE emissions intensity and any offsets required for increases in stocking rates associated with production gains. Monaro Farming Systems members wanted to compare the influence of soil type, rainfall and land management on carbon stocks. The questions they wanted answered were: Does minimum disturbance cropping influence carbon stocks over a 2 year period? What is the effect of ‘parent material’ ie. shale, deep granite and basalt (ascending texture, fertility and structure) on carbon stocks in the Monaro region? What influence does ‘aspect’ have on carbon stocks in a system with optimum sequestration potential ie. fertilised, permanent, perennial pasture system? Does liming introduced pasture increase C sequestration? What effect does soil fertility have on C stocks in the Monaro region? What effect does pasture age have on the potential of a phalaris perennial pasture to sequester carbon. Does age create a ‘ceiling’ on sequestration potentials?

Book excerpt: Despite the greatly increased productive capacity of current-day cropping systems, the shortcomings associated with conventional, high-intensity cropping systems and the growing threat of global climate change, warrant the identification of crop management practices that promote long-term agricultural sustainability and productivity. Unlike conventional cropping practices, which include synthetic nitrogen and pesticide use, alternative crop management practices, e.g., cover cropping, tillage reduction, organic amendment additions, and reducing or eliminating synthetic fertilizer use, have emerged as integrated and ecologically sound approaches to enhance agroecosystem functioning and services. Yet, mechanisms governing the differences in soil quality and crop yields among alternative cropping systems and conventional systems remain unclear. The aim of this dissertation study was to understand and quantify the mechanisms governing the relationship between carbon and nitrogen cycling and the interactions between plants, soil, and microorganisms within long-term conventional (annual synthetic fertilizer), low-input (alternating synthetic fertilizer and cover crop additions), and organic (annual manure- and cover crop additions) cropping systems, at the field-, soil pedon-, and micro-scales. A multi-scaled approach, including agronomic experiments, stable isotopes (13C and 15N), soil fractionation techniques, and microbiological analyses (e.g., functional gene quantification and phospholipid fatty acid assays), was employed to study mechanisms of soil carbon and nitrogen stabilization and loss and to draw links between microbial populations and carbon and nitrogen processing across different agroecosystems. Data from this research only partly corroborated the global hypothesis: the effects of long-term, low-input crop management enhance microbial-mediated carbon and nitrogen turnover in different soil microenvironments and optimize the balance between carbon and nitrogen stabilization and loss compared to the conventional and organic cropping systems. Only a weak relationship between short-term microbial community structure and long-term carbon and nitrogen sequestration was found across the three cropping systems. The conclusion drawn is that the effects of long-term crop management are dictated by complex trade-offs between soil carbon and nitrogen stabilization, microbial abundance and activity, nitrogen losses, crop productivity, and the quantity and quality of carbon and nitrogen inputs in alternative cropping systems.

Book excerpt: Plants are a major conduit through which carbon moves between the atmosphere and the terrestrial biosphere. The organic inputs from plants provide energy to soil microbes which fuels microbial extracellular enzyme production. Soil microbial activity determines the proportion of plant organic inputs that remains stored in soil as organic matter or is mineralized and released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Plant-soil interactions are, therefore, a critical driver of terrestrial carbon cycling. We live in an era of human-driven change which affects every aspect of ecosystem functioning, so it is critical to understand how different global change factors modulate the plant-soil interactions that influence carbon cycling. In this dissertation I focus on the effects of four specific global change factors on plant-soil interactions in a tallgrass prairie ecosystem: (1) land-use change (i.e., fire suppression and bison removal), (2) woody encroachment, (3) plant invasion, and (4) nutrient enrichment. The overall conclusion from my dissertation research is that all four of these global change factors alter plant-soil interactions in ways that change the storage or turnover of soil carbon. First, long-term fire suppression and/or bison exclusion increases soil C content over time. This change in soil C content is associated with an increase in woody plants in the case of fire suppression or an increase in the dominance of warm-season grasses in the case of bison exclusion under a frequent fire regime. Second, potential C mineralization rates under clonal woody shrubs is higher when the microbial community is decomposing proportionally more shrub-derived organic matter, suggesting that the rate of soil C flux may be dependent on how long the soil has been occupied by woody species. Third, the invasive grass Bromus inermis induces legacy effects on soil microbial community composition and soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition rates. These legacy effects persist for at least six months post-invasive grass removal. Finally, phosphorus fertilization stimulates the rate of SOM decomposition in soil undergoing woody encroachment, but nitrogen fertilization does not. Collectively, these results suggest that the effects of many global change factors on carbon cycling is dependent on spatiotemporal context and historical factors. Additionally, since each of the global change factors I studied affected carbon cycling independently, it will be important to study the combined effects of multiple global change factors acting simultaneously in order to better predict how carbon cycles through terrestrial ecosystems as the world continues to change.

To address this challenge, research was conducted to determine how: (1) cover crops affect soil health in Kansas, USA and (2) direct seeding mulch-based cropping (DMC) systems affect soil health in Nyankpala, Ghana. Soil health indicators assessed include: biomass yield (kg ha−1), soil microbial respiration (SMR), soil microbial C and N (MBC & MBN), potentially mineralizable N (PMN), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), soil organic C (SOC), soil total nitrogen (TN), phospholipid fatty acid analysis (PLFA), water stable aggregate (WSA), bulk density, pH, N, P, K, Ca and Mg. DMC systems from Ghana yielded significantly greater biomass compared to the control. High biomass produced by DMC systems did not increase SOC and PMN relative to the control. Fertilizer application had a significant impact on biomass production, which resulted in a significant increase in SOC and PMN in the 0-5 cm soil layer. Soil pH was significantly reduced by cropping systems and fertilizer in the 0-5 cm soil layer. Microbial biomass N, TN, SMR, N, P, Ca and Mg were not affected by the DMC cropping systems. Application of mineral fertilizer increased SMR, MBN, TN, N, and P. Soil K was also significantly affected by cropping systems and mineral fertilizer. The combination of mineral fertilizer and plant residues would be needed to improve soil health and increase crop productivity in the Guinea Savanna Zone of Ghana. Liming would be required to address low soil pH. In the USA, of all the soil health indicators examined, actinomycetes, gram-positive bacteria, fungi-bacteria ratio (F:B), SMR, MBN and WSA, were those significantly influenced by cover crops. The interactive effect of cover cops and N fertilizer also affected gram-positive bacteria, total PLFA, MBN, F:B ratio and WSA. Cover crop residues contributed to the observed differences in these indicators. The low response of soil health indicators suggest further evaluations are needed to determine the effectiveness of the indicators.
